  1. What are the advantages of being a TA as a M.Sc. student in ECE (other than the salary)? I'm targeting an industry related job in giant tech. companies (Intel, AMD, Nvidia,...etc) after graduation. Will it strengthen my profile when applying to such companies ? or should I focus on my research and course work ?
  2. Should a graduate student take a teaching load if he/she has no obligations by the department ? and why ?
  3. Hi all, anyone been accepted to the ECE dept. at UofT ? They started sending offers last week i guess

  7. Hello all, it has been 10 days since I accepted my offer at U of Toronto's ECE app. website, after which they sent me an email saying that they'll start working on my offer papers and send them to me when they're done. How long should I wait before sending them a reminder ? Thanks
  8. Hello all, I've been sent an acceptance email by university x and asked to select my supervisor. They send me a confirmation that they'll begin working on my formal offer papers and will send them when they're finished. How long should I wait for them before sending a reminder? (it has been over a week already)

  11. Hi all, has any graduate student received an offer from the ECE department at U of Toronto ? Thanks
  12. I have recently sent my 1st preference at school B to ask him if my offer is guaranteed, and he replied with "yes" and that he already asked the admissions to send me an offer. Yesterday, I sent school A for extension, but don't know if this too late to ask for an extension (official offer expires tomorrow). Anyways, I'm waiting for their reply today. Thank you all for your useful advice !
  13. Any help guys ?? It's very urgent!! Thanks
  14. Hi all, I have received an official offer from school A with a deadline on Feb. 27th. Recently, a POI from school B (my 1st preference) gave me an unofficial offer and told me that he has asked the grad office to send me the offer, however school B won't be able to generate the offer before Feb.27th (school regulations). So, should I ask for an extension at school A ? or should I trust POI at school B and decline my offer at A ?
  15. Hi all, first of all, is it appropriate that a professor gives a student unofficial deadline to accept (send him my decision by email) the offer 2 weeks before the official deadline on the university website ? Moreover, If I ask him to extend his unofficial offer as I have other options that I'm still considering, can it leave a negative feedback or affect my chances in anyway ? Thanks
  16. Hi all, I had an interview with a potential supervisor over Skype before applying to his university (in Canada). He offered me an unofficial offer and asked me to apply. However, he also asked me to give him my decision within two weeks (and this was even before the deadline of the university application, so way before getting any offers from other professors at his university or at other universities) and stated that it won't be appropriate to turn it down later. Since by this time I didn't have any offers, I accepted his offer as I thought it is good enough and I shouldn't leave the opportunity as I don't know my chances to be accepted at a better school or with a better professor. Recently, I got an offer from another professor at the same university as well as an offer from another university (both are a better research fit than my former unofficial offer). Is it appropriate to decline his offer and go to the same university ? What will be the most polite and respectful way to decline his offer ? Thanks
  17. What is the main difference between pursuing grad. studies in North America or Europe regarding to research culture, future opportunities. student life,....etc (Electrical and Computer Engineering)?
  18. Hello all, Should I turn down UofT for UBC if the research at UBC fits me a bit more than UofT ? (Both fully funded MSc in ECE)
  19. Hello all, I'm an international student who has an offer from both UofT and UBC for MSc degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering with funding. UBC's supervisor is slightly more of research fit than UofT's supervisor. Funding comes with TA duties at UBC and with none at UofT. How to base my decision between the two ?
  20. @raychan Most of admitted UBC international students get a student award of 3200 CAD to cover part of their extra tuition fees. https://www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/international-tuition-award BTW, Are you applying for MSc or PhD ? and did you receive your formal offer ?
  21. @TakeruK I will ask my potential supervisor for a TAship. This should give me around $5K/year. Thanks for your advice.
  22. Hi all, I'm an international student and I've been offered a GRA Funding of 18k CAD/year from my potential MSc supervisor in UBC (from which I'll pay around 5K CAD/year for tuition and leaving 13K CAD/year for living expenses). Is it below average compared to GRA fundings in the ECE department in UBC ? Is it enough for my living expenses in Vancouver ? Thanks
  23. Hi all, I'm currently accepted for a MSc in ECE as an international student at both UofT and UBC in Canada. I'm confused to accept one over the other. Here are some info regarding both programs: UofT: 1- GRA Funding of 41k CAD/year (from which I'll pay 23,700 CAD/year for tuition and leaving to me around 17k CAD/year for living expenses). 2- Co-supervised by two professors (one of them is well-known in the research area). 3- Research project is 70% interesting to me. UBC: 1- GRA Funding of 18k CAD/year (from which I'll pay around 5K CAD/year for tuition and leaving 13K CAD/year for living expenses). 2- Supervisor is not well-known 3- Research done with Nvidia. 4- Research project is 100% interesting to me. After finishing my MSc degree, my goal is to work in the industry in Canada. I need to know whether my funding offer meets the average funding at both programs, whether both funding offers are sufficient to fully depend on them, and please advise me which offer should I accept. Thanks!
