  2. Hi everyone! Congrats to all those who have interview invitations. I thought I would share my podcast episode offering interview advice as you all prepare. You can listen via the link below or search "DNA Today" on Spotify, Apple, Google Play etc. It is episode "#97 Genetic Counseling Grad School Interviews, Ranking, Matching (Part 2)." http://dnapodcast.com/episodes/2018/12/30/97?rq=97 More advice is listed in the big post below, it was also the first half of our conversation about applications. http://dnapodcast.com/episodes/2018/8/3/87-genetic-counseling-grad-school-apps If you have questions feel free to email me or the other guests on the show at info@DNApodcast.com. I'm a second year in Sarah Lawrence's program and I hope to see some of you at interviews :) Good luck everyone!
  3. Happy Match Day! Congrats to all who matched. If you didn’t match, and you are passionate about being a genetic counselor, apply again! So many amazing genetic counselors didn’t match right away, including some on this panel. If you are looking for tips and tricks about the first year of grad school, I recorded a podcast episode with fellow first-year students. http://dnapodcast.com/episodes/2019/4/26/101-genetic-counseling-match-day We Talk... ??Classes To Take Before Enrolling? Managing Finances (Loans, Aid, Jobs)? International Students? Finding Housing & Roommates? First Year Classes?‍?Rotations ?‍?? Starting Thesis? Student Mentor Program If you have questions, comments, concerns or are looking for a connections email in at info@DNApodcast.com.
  4. Glad you like them Kamille! If you have questions feel free to email in at info@DNApodcast.com. Always happy to help if I can
  5. Apparently, I can't copy and paste correctly... below is the link to the first part (episode #87). But #97 is the episode more relevant to you anyways! http://dnapodcast.com/episodes/2018/8/3/87-genetic-counseling-grad-school-apps
  6. For those who are waiting to hear back with interview invitations, I recorded a podcast episode with a 3 fellow first-year GC students (all who I met through Grad Cafe!). We all matched with programs and have a semester under our belts, so we wanted to share some tips. In this episode, we talk about our personal experiences during the interviews, preparation strategies, ranking schools, the match system and much more! We created this episode for you guys to have a better sense of the application process. This is a follow-up episode to us talking about how to gather experience and complete a competitive application (episode #87), but I imagine most people in this group have already done that. Both are linked below though. http://dnapodcast.com/episodes/2018/12/30/97 < Preparing and Completing Applications http://dnapodcast.com/episodes/2018/12/30/97 < Interviews, Rank, Match We all wish we had a resource like this when we were in your shoes. Hopefully y'all find this helpful and please feel free to reach out with questions or comments (info@DNApodcast.com)! We love hearing from other future genetic counselors
  7. Hey Kamille, For the schools I interviewed (all northeast), I had plenty of warning, around a month if I am remembering correctly. I was given dates the interviews were being held and could choose what worked best for me. Many schools have a group of interviews in the morning and a different group in the afternoon, then lunch all together. Probably depends on which schools you are applying to. Let me know if you have other questions!
  8. Sarah Lawrence is definitely one. I'm in their class of 2020 and we have 5 Canadians out of the 30 of us, and students from other countries. Another one is the University of Pittsburgh since it's fairly close to the border. I met a few Canadian students during interviews.
  9. Hello Fellow Genetics Nerds! I am collecting insight/advice from applicants who were matched with GC programs through a Google Form. This info will be shared in a blog post on DNApodcast.com, MyGeneCounsel.com and possibly another GC website (tbd). I think it would be great for us to pass along our knowledge and help future applicants as they prepare for the application process. Let me know if you have any questions. I would really appreciate your responses! Just click the form link below. https://goo.gl/forms/6fMPfJ7yXgcntmAd2
  10. Haha Haha yup! I'm so excited that you guys listen! Glad the shows are helpful, most episodes have a GC angle.
  11. I have been sending a thank you email to the program director for their time, what I liked about their program specifically and aspects of the interview day.
  12. Thanks! That's so cool you listen! I started a different podcast before this (about the Hunger Games series, lol total nerd here) and once I had a better handle on the tech side of things I started my genetics podcast. It's been so fun having different guests on!
  13. My Gene Counsel just posted a blog post with GC grad school interview advice from over 20 GCs. I found it to be helpful in preparing for my interviews. The most helpful tip for me, going in with 5 things you want to cover in your interview, kind of like a to-do list. It has helped me talk about a variety of experiences in my answers. http://www.mygenecounsel.com/blog-recent-posts/2018/2/26/advice-for-interviewingranking-genetic-counseling-grad-schools I also interviewed a Sarah Lawrence interviewer (Eleanor Griffith) on her insight into the application process and the interviews. It's a podcast so you can listen on iTunes (DNA Today) or on the website below. http://dnapodcast.com/episodes/2017/11/30/71
  14. I agree with you all, I feel like it's not appropriate to ask. And I do worry they think I'm not as serious about their school, compared to others who are interviewing at a couple. In my interviews so far they have written down the names of the schools I am interviewing at. So in future interviews, my plan is to say the general area of the northeast and leave out names if I can get away with it. Definitely going to bring this up as a future GC student and say that it's an inappropriate question.
  15. I heard back February 6th, but it seems like it's one of the schools inviting in waves.
