  1. My final results for MFA in Fine Arts:

    Colorado State: Rejected

Columbus School of Art and Design: Accepted with TA ($3,000 stipend) and $10,000 scholarship.

MassArt: Accepted with TA ($2,000 stipend) and $2,000 Dean's scholarship.

Maine College of Art: Accepted with GA ($1,500 stipend) and $5,000 scholarship.

Portland State: Accepted with GA ($1,800 stipend), $10,000 Laurel's scholarship and full tuition remission.

SVA: Requested Interview, but I declined presuming I wouldn't get much funding.

University at Buffalo: Accepted with TA ($14,704 stipend), full tuition remission and the Mark Diamond Research Grant designated for my thesis exhibition.

University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee: Rejected

    VCU: Rejected

I think I'm set on Buffalo! I don't think I could ever come close to a better offer than that and I also connect very well with the painting faculty in their department. I'm excited and nervous for the big move! But I feel confident that Buffalo is the right decision for me. Upstate New York will be way different than Oklahoma, but here goes nothing!

Hope everyone is starting to relax after all the stress and setting sights on a plan! I'd love to hear where everyone is thinking of going! ?

  2. Rejected from Columbia College Chicago after a very short interview with them last month.

No email, just randomly checked my portal and it was put on there last week.

    Today is a whirlwind.

Waitlisted at MICA Mt Royal! Since I never heard anything after the application deadline, I had written them off as a rejection. I'm honestly a little confused by the timeline though, since I wouldn't hear if a space opens up until mid-April through even possibly late July, and it seems like I would need to have my mind made up about any other schools by April 15?

How likely is it to get into a school off of their waitlist, and how many people does MICA usually waitlist?

I also got into SVA, but I'm not sure if it will be financially doable with the amount of aid I received ?

How much did you receive to SVA if you don't mind me asking?

I just received an acceptance with tuition remission, but now I’m even more stressed out as this is my second acceptance, (still waiting on two schools, including one of my top choices). I know its been said many times on this forum to not take out debt to get an MFA but I’m sort of leaning towards another program where I got a decent scholarship but the tuition is still fairly high. I believe the other school to be a much more competitive higher ranked school but I’m still so nervous to take out massive loans to fund it. I’m trying to justify the costs to myself with things like: I’ll be in a city where there is more potential for networking, it will look better on my resume, etc. But I still don’t know. Ah! Hoping I make the right choice in the end.

How is everyone else coping with funding?

I personally will take out a loan for school so that I can comfortably live while having sufficient supplies to work on my practice.

But for me, I am extremely low income and could not have received a higher education without loans, so I really didn't have a choice.

  5. Okay y'all, I am absolutely confused/flabbergasted.

I just got an interview invitation from SVA after hearing nothing from them since I turned in my application in January???

They have already sent out waitlists, rejections and acceptances in my department (fine arts/painting) several weeks ago.

    This is weird and unexpected.

Rejected from Cranbrook so that's it! All I got is Pratt and with the amount of aid I'll get I will prospectively get I can't attend Pratt either unless they give me more aid so this year was sadly a bust, but I am waiting on some residencies to reply so I have that. Much power to those still waiting and those that got in. I'll see you guys next year if they don't give me more aid for Pratt.

Try requesting more aid and explain your financial situation to them! It wouldn't hurt!

Received a rejection notice the other day via UMass Amherst's online portal.

All I've heard back from out of the 7 schools I applied to has been Yale, MECA, and UMass. Only acceptance was MECA, but their program is still unaffordable for me even with their scholarship and fin. aid package. Does anyone else think it's BS that these "TA positions" provide a stipend of only $3k per year?!

Anyway, I'm going to chalk it up as a loss for me.  I'll develop my work some more,  and perhaps apply again in a couple of years since I'm fresh out of undergrad; although I'm thinking graduate school may not be the path for me at this point. Congratulations and good luck to everyone accepted into their programs!

I got the same offer from MECA. I agree with you 100%. With their huge tuition costs, that is no where close to the amount you would need to attend. It's actually crazy.

Welcome to Buffalo! UB's North Campus, where you'll probably be as a MFA student, is in a pretty suburban area without totally being in the middle of nowhere. The campus itself is pretty big and has a bit of an undergrad feel, but it's only about a 5-10 minute drive from a mall and different shopping plazas that have pretty much everything within a 2 mile radius. I know people that lived in the Villas nearby and had no complaints, but I don't think they allow dogs. I also know people that lived in the Paradise Lane Apartments in Tonawanda, which is about a 10-15 minute drive. I think they lived by themselves, but they definitely do allow dogs there. Other than that, I don't know too much about housing near North Campus. UB's South Campus is smaller and mainly has the dental, nursing, and OT/PT programs. South campus is located in a pretty rough part of town so definitely be careful if you're looking at apartments in this area. You'll find some cheaper options here, but crime does happen in this area on a regular basis. UB also has a relatively new downtown campus, which is the new home for the medical school and a handful of research centers. Our downtown isn't too exciting, so I definitely wouldn't suggest going out your way for living in the city, as it is pretty expensive for no reason. Also worth mentioning is where our other public school, SUNY Buffalo State, is located. It's in the "trendy/hipster" part of town with a handful of museums and art galleries nearby. There are a lot of houses that have been transformed into apartments/shared housing situations and they're pretty nice from what I've been told. When I was a student there several years ago, Elmwood/Richmond Ave and their cross streets were considered the nicer streets to live on, and we were advised to stay away from Grant St, which is the next street over from Richmond and where it starts to get sketchy. However, apparently they've been working on revitalizing this part of the city and I'm told parts of it aren't that bad anymore. If you're up for a little commute (20-25 minutes), I would definitely recommend this area. Aside from this, there are places to live south of Buffalo which aren't too expensive, but this only increases your commute time and puts you in the middle of the typical lake effect snow zone, which is definitely not ideal if you're new to the city.

The general rule of thumb for avoiding the crime/poverty areas is to not live east of Main Street or west of Richmond Ave (or I guess Grant Street, nowadays). You didn't mention anything about bringing a car, but I will also add that Buffalo's public transportation system isn't the best. It is possible to get around without a car, but it gets increasingly more difficult, especially when you start to go outside of the city (aka, you will have a hard time getting to North Campus if you do not live there).

    Good luck!

Thanks for all of the info!

Do you know anything about the new Axis 360 student apartments near South campus?

You said crime is bad in the South campus area, should I be concerned for my safety in a place like Axis or is it pretty well contained? I know it is a gated community.

I've also heard that there is a free shuttle that will take you from South campus to North campus. Is that pretty accurate?

I went to undergrad in an incredibly small town in Oklahoma, so I'm sure downtown Buffalo and the campus will seem exponentially more exciting that where I went lol.

But I am nervous about the crime and lack of public transportation. I've heard that a few times now.

  9. Accepted to UB's Fine Arts MFA program for this fall!

I'm from Oklahoma and I have never been to New York!

Can anyone tell me about the campus and the city? I'm also in search of off campus housing that allows a small dog. Preferably a shared house or apartment situation.

    Thanks!

Great! Do you mind sharing how much they offered financially? Is your tuition covered with the scholarship?

From what I've found, tuition is not covered with the assistantships. You just get a stipend equal to a little over $1,000.

The Dean's scholarship was defined as a $2,000 scholarship to go toward your senior thesis show.

So over all it is not a huge amount of funding, but I was expecting a smaller award from them based on what previous forums have reported about aid they've received.

    Hi guys!

Wondering if anyone applied to SUNY Buffalo?

I was told about a month ago that I would be nominated for a fellowship, however all that information has been slow to trickle out and I still haven't heard whether that is going to come through or not.

Then about an hour ago I got an email from the DGS that I was accepted! But it was just a generic "congratulations and welcome" email and did not include funding info.

Curious if anyone else has heard from Buffalo and what your experience has been??

Hi, chiming in from the MFA forum.

I was accepted to UB and have received TA and stipend info from my department.

I talked to financial aid and they said fellowship, loan and University scholarship info outside of your department should be mailed out on April.

    Hope this helps!

I think the specific department you apply for generally controls the more merit based funding like tuition remission and assistantships whereas the financial aid office will tell you the loans and amount of loans you qualify for annually.

In my email, the art dept. Director told me some additional funding opportunities include several Dean's fellowships.

So I was curious if he didn't have control over fellowships and that's decided by the University itself.

Hmm, I guess we'll find out! Thanks @artperson

I had emailed the NCSU admissions department today regarding the same and from what I inferred by their reply,  your assumption is correct. Most universities have a different financial aid sector within the admissions office which applies for (generally) domestic students. For international applicants, its mostly whatever the department has to offer, be it TAships/RAships or merit based scholarships. I hope that clears your query.

    Thanks so much, Pallavi!

Hope I get some more funding soon then!

    How are your applications going?

  14. I don't remember how this worked last year.

Does financial aid come from two different areas of the University sometimes?

For example, I got a TA with a stipend and tuition remission via email from the director of the art department. I also got an email from the actual financial aid office from the University stating they received my FAFSA and to expect a financial aid package in the mail.

Is it possible that I could get more funding outside of the art department from the University itself?

It's kind of a confusing question, I'm sorry!

Yes! I got accepted to penn state but have been trying to reach them to figure out when the decision deadline is and nobody is answering or returning my emails. Also have heard nothing about financial aid. If I apply to scholarships, will I hear back before the deadline? Gah I am dying, because I definitely cannot go if I don’t get enough financial aid.

That's crazy these they aren't communicating with you. I'm sure they're busy, but still.

I think you should check out all of the scholarships and their deadlines and go ahead and apply for as many as you can, it wouldn't hurt.

Also dig through the website and see if any scholarships were automatically applied for when you filled out your FAFSA and/or your admission application.

  16. Anxiously waiting for my financial aid package for the University at Buffalo.

Anyone else in the same waiting phase? It's almost as nerve wracking as waiting for the acceptance lol.

Hi everyone, been anonymously lurking and reading here the past few months through my application process. I applied to 7 schools and have only heard back from Yale (rejection) and MECA (acceptance via phone call last tuesday).

Has anyone heard from the following schools?

Columbia University (I think I read they all ready sent out interviews for painting)
    RISD
    UMass Amherst
    University of Oregon
    University of Washington

Also, I am currently finishing undergrad at Pratt Institute. If anyone has questions about the school I'd be more than happy to share some info.

I was accepted into MECA as well. Congrats!

    Hi all,

I've been anonymously reading this forum throughout the process of applying to MFA painting programs. Thank you for all the input additional information you have supplied throughout this forum.

Has anyone heard from the following programs? (interviews, acceptances, rejections...)TIA.

    Indiana University

    Boston University

    Virginia Commonwealth University

    Tyler School of Art

I'm pretty sure VCU has sent out pretty much all of their painting interviews and acceptances.

I also seem to have not made the cut.

But hey, maybe there will be another load of notifications who knows.
