Questions, Concerns, and Advice Re: Reapplying
Kantattheairport replied to Dialectica's topic in Philosophy
I was going to start a new thread for reapplications, but then I saw that this already exists, so bumping. I know that the corpse of this year's cycle is still twitching in its coffin, but early birds and all that! Is anyone else already trying to think and strategize what to do, and how to go about reapplying? Do you think you'll only want to polish up your writing sample, or write a new one entirely? Any ideas on what else you might do in the interim? I'll want to speak to my recommenders before deciding, but leaning generally towards writing a new sample... -

Just took myself off the waitlist at GSU. Good luck, friends!- 222 replies

I'd be very happy to get to take any of those options - we'll see!

Thanks for the advice and encouragement, guys - I just had the Skype meeting, and it went very well. Regardless of whether or not I end up getting an offer, it was a very encouraging chat to have!

Waitlisted at NYU, MIT, GSU - so beginning to look at next year's cycle.

Finally caved in to the fact that I wouldn't be able to afford Tufts, and declined their offer. Apologies for doing it so late - it was a difficult decision to make, and I kept clinging on to the hope that they might be able to offer a bit more funding. Oh well. Good luck to whoever gets the spot!

PHILOSOPHY M.A. ACCEPTANCE/REJECTION 2018

Speaking of which - just declined Tufts' offer, which should open up a spot to someone on the waitlist. EDIT: Not completely certain about this, but I may also decline an offer from GSU, provided they make me an offer (I'm on the waitlist) - it might depend on the offer, so could be a last-minute decision. Sorry!- 222 replies

Funding, perhaps? You'd usually have to pay at both, but Tufts typically offers at least a partial remission.- 222 replies

No change to the portal as far as I can see - I only received the email!

All right friends, a little panicky. One of my waitlist institutions offered to Skype with me. Regardless of my chances, which are the customary 'non-zero', it seems to me that it would basically be stupid of me to not take up the offer to chat... but I don't really have any questions about the program at this late stage. So, what should I do to not make a complete fool of myself? Should I even go ahead with a Skype meeting? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hopefully it means you have a different message coming your way! I guess hold on and see over the next hour or however long it could reasonably take them to resend this message.
-
First time applicant, so I didn't realize this was the case. Oh well.

I didn't actually receive a direct response to my email itself (I had emailed Professor Paul), but I just got an email from Professor Marc Lange telling me that I will soon receive an email informing me of my rejection. So I guess I still technically have the UNC Chapel Hill decision to look forward to, although I know already what it is. Not much of a transformative experience.

Just got the rejection from UNC Chapel Hill.

Can I just say, Jessica Moss just seems like such a genuinely kind person. Even when she's conveying bad news. So thankful for faculty like that.
-
Yes, but there's only one UW - Yoo Dub!

Congratulations!

Regarding YouTube, perhaps you're familiar with them already, but Wireless Philosophy (or Wi-Phi) are consistently excellent and cover a lot of important topics, so would recommend them! Apart from that, perhaps just take a look at some syllabi for Intro classes and see if you can find some of the papers?
-
Ah, thanks - I sent them an email yesterday; I was wondering if the response had changed at all since we're now only days away. I guess I can expect to receive the same email soon, then.
-
Anyone else tried contacting Chapel Hill at this point?
-
I've been informed that it's pretty unlikely, although not impossible, that NYU will be dipping into their waitlist this year. Not exactly unexpected information, but there it is, in case anyone else was also wondering.

One of my favourites: How many speech act theorists does it take to change a light bulb? *Do you really want to know or are you simply asking me to change it?*
-
Good luck to you!
-
Congrats! Still dawdling on the waitlist, but perhaps with a little luck I'll see you there.

Is it NYU that you decided upon in the end?
