Does anyone know of any MSW programs that are online besides Laurier and UVIC? And BSW programs that are offered online? TIA.

Yes! I did a two year post-degree BSW at Dalhousie after a BA in psych (they have an online version, I did it on campus though). Also, I believe UVic and University of Manitoba have online BSWs as well.
I know though, that at Dal you need to do a week or two on-campus at the beginning (summer)...

Sure, I am a CYW (graduated in 2000 from Humber College), Undergrad in Peace and Conflicts Studies minor in Social Development Studies at Waterloo (79% average, but higher in my last two years).  I have worked full-time in mental health mostly in hospitals for the last 18 years.  I currently work in emerge doing mental health assessments and intake for out-patient referrals.  Guess you could say I did my time in the field, lol.  Good Luck!!!

I don't have a BSW, but my main reason for wanting to do a MSW is so I can work as a mental health therapist.  I am applying for Masters of Counselling Psychology programs as well, and whatever I end up getting accepted into, is what I will do.  I live in Alberta and most of the job postings I see for mental health therapists need either a MSW or MC. I don't think a BSW can work as a clinical social worker, I could be wrong though.

I applied for the Jan 2019 start date and haven't heard anything yet either.  They told me late Aug/early Sept.  Based on previous cohorts, I'm expecting that will end up being pushed even later.  I'd like to find out sooner than later so I can have lots of time to figure out funding.

Thank you for starting this group!   We can have stress together! lol!  I've applied for Laurier's online, part-time MSW for non-social work students...Jan 2019 start date.  It's the only university I've applied to, and if I don't get accepted this year, my plan is to apply to Athabasca's Masters of Counselling Psychology.  I have to do an online program; I'm 37, 2 kids, job.  No way I can go to an actual school.  Good luck to everyone!

I did Lakehead's 1-year HBSW and remember the application process as being quite daunting. From what I recall, your average should still meet their requirements. Marks definitely aren't everything though, I worked hard on my resume, had strong references, and spent a lot of time preparing for the personal statement exam. It all paid off in the end.  I also don't think the competition is as fierce as the application may lead one to believe, although I'm sure it varies year to year.
If you have any questions about the program feel free to reach out.

I applied to the January 2019 intake for the online part-time program. Starting to worry now I won’t get in, especially if it’s based on experience.  I’ve been an LPN for 11 years and have over 12,000 hours in the field, but it’s not necessarily social work stuff I’m doing.  Looks like I’m going to have to start looking at a backup plan.

There are 80 spots and 290 applicants for September intake. Thank you for your positive vibes. In your cohort, did everyone have similar credentials? Did most have work experience? Or high grades? Just curious to what they put the most emphasis on (grades, work experience, certain degrees?)

I agree, notice would be nice. I am anticipating on sometime in June. Once people accept or decline they will be going down the wait lists and offering spots. I think you will have notice considering the cut off is in a couple weeks. You will probably have 4/5 months notice. May start only had a couple weeks/month and September will be around 2 months notice(depending).

I answered mine in essay format. You have the option of essay format or answering them separately. It is more difficult to write an essay that flows, while answering the questions. I tried to connect everything best i could. The feedback i recieved from people editing my essay was answering the questions would be too informal. It's entirely up to you and what you feel is best. I also would have put headers above every question, which would have taken up too many words. I just made it under 1000.

Hi dem13, def write it as one big essay rather than separate questions. I was told my personal statement was really strong by the prof who wrote my reference for me (he wanted my whole application before writing it) and I got into the Laurier 2 year MSW for the fall. If you are struggling a bit (I know I def did the first year I applied!!!) feel free to send me a private message and I can try to help.

I'm in program too.  It's straight through - you take classes all three semesters of the year (spring/winter/fall) until you graduate.  However, you do have breaks - there is a reading week in both fall (the week after thanksgiving), winter (the week following family day), and a break over Christmas.  The classes don't fill the entire 4 months of the summer, and there's a few weeks off then too.
