    Penn ECS MS.Ed

Hi all! So I was recently rejected (as I expected) from UPenn's Education, Culture, and Society PhD program. A few days ago, I got an email from the director of the ECS MS.Ed program saying that although they couldn't admit me to the PhD program, they would like to apply to the MS.Ed program because they think I would be a good fit there. Does anyone know anything about the MS.Ed program? I think it's really expensive and they don't have that much funding. I'm also wondering how easy it is for graduates to then be admitted into a PhD program at Penn. My sister knows some people who've been affiliated with Penn GSE and they said that Penn does sometimes favor applicants they know. If anyone has other info on this program I'd be very grateful!

    Interviews/Acceptances/Rejections Fall 2019

Oh so it's like an unofficial waitlist? I just don't get why they wouldn't notify me of being on a waitlist and then reject.

    Interviews/Acceptances/Rejections Fall 2019

Is anyone still waiting to hear from anywhere? I just haven't heard from Boston College, which I'm assuming is a rejection. I'm just kind of wondering why they haven't told me that yet ...

Yes please! I just got waitlisted there, which tbh I'm really surprised by because I thought I would never have a shot there, but I would love to be able to attend! Hopefully I'm not at the bottom of that waitlist.

Good to know! Thank you. I was hoping they hadn't made all their decisions yet.

I haven't heard back from BC, I've just seen that a few people were accepted there on the results page.

Ok so, I've seen people have been admitted to UC San Diego, Boston College, and USC. I'm guessing there's no way I got into San Diego, but should I give up on USC and Boston College as well?

    2019 Education Applications

Does anyone know anything about U Buffalo’s Education, Culture, and Society PhD? I got in but no funding for first year students. Trying to determine how strong the program is. They also don’t have student profiles so I need to contact someone to see if they have a student I can talk to because there’s not enough info online about this program.

Please post if you do! I wouldn't worry about calling Rutgers though - one of my mentors said it's a pretty normal thing to do and judging from some people's posts, I think it's okay.

What do people think is going on with USC? I've just seen the two acceptances on the results page, and nothing else. Do you think they've sent out all their acceptances and that's it? Still haven't heard anything from any of the schools I applied to so that's kind of stressful. I just want to hear something!

    Interviews/Acceptances/Rejections Fall 2019

I'm going crazy here, especially because I keep getting generic recruitment emails from grad departments I didn't apply to. I'm guessing I probably didn't get into USC or Minnesota as I haven't heard anything yet :/ My only consolation is that it's like -40 in Minnesota right now.

Application Timeline Details - transcripts, scores, etc.

Thanks @Moods! I figured that this might be something I need to do ASAP, but didn't want to because the GRE particularly is so much up front. I guess I'll go ahead and get it over with though, it will probably help me relax about the whole thing anyway.
  13. Hey all, So as deadlines are approaching I wanted to get some advice about when to do things like order transcripts and GRE scores. I've gotten a bit overwhelmed to just trying to keep track of how each school wants materials to be submitted, and I don't want to realize I forgot something at the last minute. When should I order my transcripts? When should I have the GRE scores sent? Thanks!

    GPA/GRE Scores - Can I still apply?

Thanks you guys for responding! I wasn't sure about retaking the GRE because I felt like the quant wasn't improving, but maybe if it improved this much it could get even better. I also really appreciate your honesty. Getting research opportunities where I am has been pretty difficult (most research being done in my area is medical). I've transcribed interviews for PhD students and done small qualitative projects, but nothing substantial. I'll keep working on GRE and trying to gain more experience! Thanks again.

    GPA/GRE Scores - Can I still apply?

Hey all! I know there are probably a lot of these posts already, but I still want to ask. I'm planning on applying to PhD programs next year that are strong for qualitative methods/ethnography. I graduated last spring from a small liberal arts college that's pretty rigorous, and I just didn't get it together in time to apply this past year. I've been really nervous about applying because of how I read on paper. I'm pretty confident that my letters of recommendation will be strong, as well as my writing sample(s), and hopefully after several drafts my statement of purpose will be as well, at least in terms of the writing (I'm between two different research ideas that I'll present in the statement). The downsides are that I don't have much research experience because my school was so small, my GRE scores aren't great (163 verbal, 148 quant - actually kind of proud of the quant since it's higher than I ever got in practice), and sadly I only have a 3.63 GPA. I'm worried about the GPA right now because I was looking at UCLA's website and they ask you to report your GPA for the last two years of your work. I mostly got As during that time in my main courses, but I was also taking French and Spanish for those years and I got a lot of Bs in those classes because I had read that grad school didn't really care about your grades in those classes. I demonstrated my proficiency in the languages during the final oral exam and thought that was fine. I was also going through a lot in my final quarter of college (i.e. was depressed, financially strained, and exhausted from doing college). So I calculated the GPA for the last two years and it was like a 3.3 or something! Now I'm really stressed because I don't think that reflects on the overall quality of what I did in college. Anyway, I know this is long winded, but will schools take time and actually look at my transcript so they can see I did well in the classes that were within the social sciences? And more largely, do I have a chance if the other parts of my application are strong? I think I have what it takes, and I also think that grad schools should consider that at my college didn't have summer breaks (we had work quarters where you still had to do classes online) so it required a bit of stamina to get through it all. Any feedback would really be appreciated. I'm super nervous and don't want to be rejected from everywhere
