MichaelMonroe reacted to Gradphd123 in Fall 2019 Psychology - Where are you going?!
    Good Afternoon,
I was recently waitlisted post interview at my top choice.
I have confirmed I would like to stay on the waitlist. I would like to stay relevant in my POIs mind.
What would anyone suggest emailing for a status update?

From reading your post, it seems like school A is the right choice. You wrote about it passionately and the fact that you HATE the location of school B and you think you would be unhappy there is a major downfall; imagine how terrible your 4+ year experience would be if you hated where you lived and it wasn't even close to family? I also will be working with a -relatively new- PI at my school and I'm INCREDIBLY excited about it. From speaking with others in similar positions, newer PIs are 1) really motivated to publish and earn their tenure, 2) hands on, involved, and provide a lot of feedback and 3) in many cases, are more similar in age to you which sets the stage for a beautiful working relationship and deeper connections with that person than if you're working with someone that is 20-30 years older. Also, just because your main PI is newer, that doesn't mean you aren't also able to collaborate with and learn from the more experienced faculty! School A all the way

No interview, so I assumed this was the case. I reached out to my POI, and she told me. My portal has not changed. She said that official letters should be going out in the next few weeks.

Jees, rough week for me. I got rejected from UCLA & UM-College Park, both of which were very kind responses to my inquiry email to my POIs.
On the otherhand, the response from my UCI POI was a waitlist! First rounds are out, but I'm not out of the running.

I lived in Storrs for 4 years as an undergrad. When people tell you there is nothing to do there, they are right.
First of all, Storrs is only the zip code 06269 and is owned by the university. If you live off campus you are living in Mansfield (06268). There are many apartment buildings located off campus which are mostly occupied by loud partiers. DO NOT LIVE IN CARRIAGE HOUSE APARTMENTS OR CELERON APARTMENTS. During spring weekend partying cars get flipped over and lit on fire, the population triples and people walk around these two complexes. Try to stay at least 5 miles away from campus. The area is very safe pretty much everywhere. You just don't want to be around partying ungrads. Try: http://www.offcampushousing.uconn.edu/

For things to do: not much. The main road at uconn is called Storrs Rd, also Route 195. There is a Big Y grocery store, Store 24, a couple pizza places, and a mexican restaurant. There are 2 tiny bars on campus full of mostly undergrads (Huskies and Teds), and a newer, bigger bar, a stones throw from campus. If you want to go to a mall, the closest one is 45 minutes away. Buckland Hills: http://www.theshoppesatbucklandhills.co ... index2.asp

All I have to say is good luck. UCONN is a party school because there is absolutly nothing to do there but drink and sled in the cow fields.

Anyone have a skype/phone interview where they didn't leave time for you to ask them questions? I just got done interviewing with UMD and they said they had 30 minutes to talk, asked me questions for 30 minutes and then said goodbye, so weird. I've had 3 other interviews and they all asked if I had any questions at the end. Kinda thinking it means she's not going to offer me an in-person interview.

No idea. Two I've talked to this year have mentioned wanting 2 students. Another had 3 current students in the same cohort. Even if they only planned to take 1, another student or postdoc could get a fellowship or they get a new grant and decide they really liked both. ....that just probably won't happen if you're glaring down the other applicant the whole time.
In general, I feel like it's best to approach interviews more like a conference than a competition. You're just there to chat about good science and (maybe) see a new area of the country - with the PIs, the other applicants, the current grad students, whatever.

i'm sort of in the same boat with you. i've gotten accepted to one of my top choices but i've decided to still go to all my interviews. reason being (1) as @Psyhopeful said, you never know if this school is going to be a better environment or a better fit. it's good to keep an open mind. (2) visiting other schools may bring up questions or things that you never thought of before for e.g. what if the second school is able to offer you an amazing funding package or has this resource that you never thought existed before? that knowledge can also help you later on, when you decide on things to consider for your post-doc (3) networking opportunity!! you will have a chance to meet with renowned faculty in your field and that in itself is an opportunity you should never pass up. you are also going to meet fellow prospectives that you can network and learn from - these are people that later on you will meet at conferences anyway so its good to start your networking from now!

Friendly reminder that if you’re an applicant, even if it’s your second year of applying, you have absolutely no right to tell someone that a piece of their application must be weak if they aren’t getting offers. That’s not how the clinical psych world works. There are more competitive applicants than there are spots, so a lot of it is luck. Social capital also comes into play, so check your privilege. End rant.

I had interviews my first round and did not receive any acceptances. The feedback I got back was that I did not have as clear and concise academic/research ideas and theoretical perspectives as the other applicants - so I just felt happy that it was something I could easily develop, and that it wasn't my personality or interviewing skills that were horrible. ?

Everyone's experiences are different though. I know people who are still on their third or fourth attempt, while some people were accepted their first round! Good luck! ☺️

I got my first acceptance! UConn is my 4-5 choice so I probably won't go unless my interviews go really badly, but still I'm so much more relaxed now!

I didn't apply to the HDFS program but I just had skype interview for the Developmental Psych program on Saturday. I'm thinking that means formal invites will go out in the next week or so, so probably don't worry yet.

I agree. UMD is actually one of my last choices anyways, I was mostly just wanting to practice and I also didn't want to pass up any opportunties.
Thanks for the words of support!

I think this is good enough then. Maybe it is her style, and she's simply an odd/brief person. On the plus side, now you get an opportunity to think this through: Are these the kind of mentor-mentee interactions you'd like to have with the person who's responsible for your career development for the next 5+ years of your life? Probably not.  I (personally) am a very 1st impression/vibes kind of person, especially over the phone. If I can sense someone is not interested in me or is not as pleasant/warm/thorough as I'd prefer, it's a no-go for me lol.

Don't sweat/overthink this call too much. Focus on killing your other interviews

MichaelMonroe got a reaction from PsychologySam in I got a 5 on the AWA!!!
I'm soooo happy. I took the GRE over the summer and got 156Q/157V/3AWA and I was feeling really bad about myself. I considered sending in the scores anyways, but my advisor (who's seen my writing before) was convinced that the writing score was a fluke. I took the test again on Oct 15 and just got my scores back: 154Q/160V/5AWA! I'm sooo happy! I expected my Q to go down a bit, but since I'm in psych I don't think a low Q score will kill me.

For anyone struggling with the AWA I practiced using this format for the argument: https://www.kaptest.com/study/gre/how-to-structure-the-gre-argument-essay/. And this format for the issue https://www.kaptest.com/study/gre/how-to-structure-the-gre-issue-essay/. I just memorized the basic format and practiced it timed about 4-5 times without looking at my notes.
