  1. I doubled in psychology and philosophy in undergrad (at a well-regarded but SLAC), then finished my MA in philosophy at a large state school with a very good philosophy program. I was a good student in undergrad, but I was a much better student as a graduate--I presented at conferences, have a 3.98 GPA (darn single A-), won an award for academic work and contributions to the department, etc. This year I plan on applying to both philosophy and psychology (clinical/counseling) PhD programs this year. I have two questions. 1) should I use my philosophy thesis as a writing sample? It is psych-oriented, but more interdisciplinary, but by far my best academic work. Or should I find a more traditional research paper from undergrad? 2) should my LORs all be from my advisors from my grad school, who will no doubt write me very good letters but are philosophers, or should I get LORs from at least one of my undergrad psych profs who haven't worked with me in two years and would write good-but-not-as-good letters? Any other advice for someone who has been out of the discipline for two years? Thanks in advance!
  2. Is anyone planning on / heavily leaning towards declining USC?
  3. I emailed them today and they told me they were still considering applications and that final decisions will be released hopefully by the end of the week.
  4. Hey, I've heard a lot of mixed reviews of Western Ontario as a PhD program and couldn't find anything helpful and recent on here. Does anyone have any insights (positive or negative) on Western Ontario? It seems like their placement record isn't great, even for SLACs. Am I missing something? Would I be setting myself up for not getting an academic job if I go there? What is their reputation like, and how hard would it be to move back to the US after completion? If you go there, what do you think of the climate? How livable is the stipend? Do grad students there seem happy? Thanks in advance! For reference, my AOIs are applied ethics (esp. bioethics) and feminist philosophy.
  5. You should consider adding VT to your list of MA programs. I'm a second year student there now, and I'm happy to answer any questions that you have. In regards to funding, every person in the program this year is fully funded (tuition plus stipend), and last year all but two students received full funding. I believe we do require the GRE, but I may be wrong. It certainly isn't the most important aspect of the application, but it may be required by the Graduate School. As for where you should go for a Masters. As much as it shouldn't be this way, PhD programs do care about the strength of the program you came from. Given that your interests may change, so you can't really say for certain where you want to go for a PhD, I definitely recommend trying to get into the best MA program possible. Coming from a continental undergrad university and being at a highly analytic program now, I feel like it is easier to go from an analytic school to a continental school than vice versa, so if you aren't entirely sure or want to do a combination of both, I recommend going to a strong analytic program. Best of luck!
