Thanks for the encouragement ☺️ I have my fingers crossed for acceptance and funding at Villanova! And if not, for better things in the 2020 cycle.
-
Yeah the lack of waitlist and small amount of acceptances is what gives me pause. Although to be honest I’ve counted this as a flat rejection ever since I didn’t get the call in early Feb, and have told everyone that I’m shut out from all PhD programs.

@hgtvdeathdrive @mandelbulb I'm in the saaaaaaame boat. I currently live in CA, but I'm definitely spending the first few months of the summer at my family's house (not in CA). I need to figure out whether I can leave my car in CA! I need to figure out whether I'm moving all of my stuff out of my current apartment, or getting a storage unit! Who would've thought a university could ghost you, smh...

AHAHAH. That made me die! I definitely have so many pages of the Purdue OWL bookmarked--it's everything! Especially as my research is moving more into some cultures work. PTL for a guide that tells you how to cite a tweet or a youtube video! *snaps* to the "y'all" discussion. I will defend y'all forever. The lack of a plural "you" or a formal "you" in the English language is a no from me. But I have NEVER heard "yinz"--wtf is "yinz"!?

@jadeisokay I have the SAME thing with punctuation inside quotation marks! @kendalldinniene and Jade, totally feel you on how there can be more dynamics at play especially in terms of how grammar operates...can be so classist and elitist! But also, comma usage is my personal pet peeve and by the time I'm on the 35th paper, I wanna tear my hair out when students have a sentence fragment that somehow has five commas in it.
-
Spending one of the first few days of my spring break endlessly grading papers for a GE Business course that I TA for. Good practice for hopefully being a grad assistant someday, but also...can't believe the degree to which college students don't know how to use commas...

My acceptance letter said tuition for the one year is about $60,000. And yeah—not including living costs, for the one year program!
-
Same here, same scholarship. I’m like...you think I can go $50K in debt (tuition alone) for my MA? Nah.
-
I haven't read it! Thank you for the rec--I'm heading into spring break soon, and in need of good reads! Bookmarking it right now ☺️

Has anyone else read Christina Sharpe's In the Wake: On Blackness and Being? It was on the reading list for my seminar, and I was just floored by Sharpe's writing and theoretical prowess and creativity and also everything. Also, on a plane ride today, I reread Orientalism for the first time in a while. Guess theory is my new coping mechanism? Can't tell if that's like good or crazy haha!

YES!!! I'm so happy for you!

Friends!!! I just had a paper on dynamics of embodied race in Kate Chopin's "Desiree's Baby" accepted for publication in an undergraduate research journal! I am OVER THE MOON! My first academic publication!

Here Comes the Sun/ Waitlist Movements
Bopie5 replied to Warelin's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
The invisible waitlist element of some programs is so stressful. I get why they do it, but also...knowing the worst is better than not knowing whether my app is already in the trash. -
Ah, truly, you don't know what this means to me. I've saved this and reread it a few times whenever I feel discouraged about the wait to hear from Villanova. Thank you for the affirmation and for the well wishes! I have my fingers crossed! Also, the ETS thing--so real. I didn't try for fee waivers this year, and that's a big regret. The bank account hit is almost insult to injury after a shutout... Excited to see what happens for you at Irvine! Can't wait to hear about how your research develops, as I also love your interest areas! I didn't even THINK of how many books $900 is. Now I'm picturing the 40-90 books that could have been ? We really do deserve what breaks we can take. I hope you can give yourself some rest as you prepare for the next cycle and pursue new and interim things. Truly wishing you the best as well--hope I get to keep reading your work.

That's exactly how I'm feeling! Even when pulling together my Villanova app, I realized how much I'd grown and become more focused in the last few months. But I feel the same way about the money too. I look at my bank account and realize that I could have about $900 more in there...eeeek. I'm taking a month long break regardless too. Fingers crossed for a good internship for you! And re: the writing sample--this warmed my heart extremely this morning! I hope you enjoy Asher Lev. Affirmation on the WS means more than you know right now!
-
Wow, thank you so much for this--might copy paste and save this so I can read it whenever I'm feeling discouraged! You don't sound patronizing at all, this is actually really encouraging. It's good to hear from someone older that there is so much time. I think on the days I got my rejections it felt like the end of my dream. But now that the sting has faded a bit, I know this is just a roadblock and not a end-all be-all. Thank you ☺️

Hi! Ah, wasn't Dr. Radcliffe so nice!? I was shocked at the time and energy he put into both emails and the phone call. He seems really awesome, and the program ethos seems so supportive. Fingers crossed that we will be funded cohort mates, and get to meet in person! And maybe go to Dublin!? So cool that Irish drama is your thing--you've got a lot of good faculty and resources there then.
-
Thank you friend ☺️ I'm really sad that the cycle didn't shake out the way that we hoped for either of us. What's your backup plans looking like? Good luck with your thesis, and I may be in the same boat regarding being back in the summer! Don't give up--my advisor says over half of the faculty in our English department are people who were shutout on the first attempt and accepted on the second!
-
I will absolutely! The program seems like a really good fit for me. Do you know where you're leaning for your decision for next year? And I LOVE Ireland--I spent almost three weeks there on my semester abroad. I really hope that I can go back *crosses fingers* Oh my gosh, would definitely love swapping creative work--shoot me an email!
-
Awww wow heart warmed!! I missed you too--part of why I had to pop back by honestly.
-
Yeah, I can definitely see that about Villanova in terms of your interests. There were a few good 20th/21st c fem/gen people there, and their summer theatre program in Ireland seemed really ideal for me. I had a phone call with the program director and he seemed great, so I'm hopeful! Ooof I hope you enjoy that vacation. I'm leaving for vacation in a week and I'm feeling the exact same way. Keep us updated on the teaching fellowship!
-
That's wild because I was thinking about you the other day because someone in my class was talking about Russian film!! I am hanging in there--applied to the Villanova funded MA, and am crossing my fingers. What about you? How are backup plans/second tries shaping up?
-
@jadeisokay Honestly, same. Haven't posted or been on as much, but I've still been lurking all the topics!
