  1. Lol don't ruin my pity party with your science sympathizing and, you know, facts ? This is some next level shit, and I respect it. Also that new WashU acceptance made my heart stop for a second thinking it was UW, which I shouldn't hear from for like a month.
  2. I'd love to see this thread become active again. My last years in undergrad were wonderful for me. I came back to school in my late 20s, and I think I enjoyed the experience a lot more, and got more out of it, than if I hadn't taken years off school to work. The English department at SOU was small and very collaborative, and I got the chance to take a James Baldwin class, a Chicanx lit class, and an ethnic lit class that all really got me interested in intersectionality in writing. I also took an intro to teaching methods class, and some research I did on enjambment in that class (it was my topic for my lesson plan/presentation) had me stumble over the work of poet Jim Ferris, which got me hooked on Disability poetics. My professors and their interests really impacted me and supported me in developing my research interests. Everything I do is through a feminist lens, which I brought to school with me, but that, too, was totally supported and grown by my department.
  3. Riiiigggghhhhtttt? All those psych students getting their results in December made me positively green.
  4. I just watched her read it on youtube at the Crocker Museum in Sacramento, where I live! So cool, thanks for the rec @Bopie5 love poem a day!
  5. I've been reading a lot of Sharon Olds lately (and always). I love her.
  6. Yes. It's freaking me out. Although that's sort of my base mood at this point ?
  7. I graduated last spring, and now I spend time wishing I were back at school, talking theories with my classmates, doing research in the library, and crashing my professor's office hours to pick their brains. Haha, the grass is always greener, I guess.
  8. Everyone already said it but: the GRE is trash. Considering the schools all get an SoP and WS, the only new information they're getting from the test is your quant. Which they likely don't care about. The whole point of app documents (besides talking about your interests and plans) is to show your verbal and writing skills. Please someone tell me how a timed couple of paragraphs about marketing a golf resort (my writing prompt, what a joy) are adding anything to my application, let alone $27 worth of anything. I also think app fees should be either gotten rid of or drastically reduced and standardized. That being said, about 85% of my fees were waived this year (and Loyola doesn't charge a fee at all) due to financial hardship. If anyone wants any tips on getting fees waived next year...lemme know. It is really easy at most programs, at least in my experience. Especially if you qualified for that 50% GRE fee waiver. I have a friend who applied to 15+ law programs last year and basically every school utilizes a third party app that you put your info into once (ONCE!!!??!!) and then it distributes whatever each school wants to that school. Can you imagine? WHY can't English programs do this? Standardize your damn SoP and WS lengths and don't make us type our demographic/education history/etc over and over again. It's so inefficient and tedious. Two part app processes like at Nebraska and Austin drove me nuts. On the other hand, I thought UCSB's and BU's applications were really clear, easy to work with, and intuitive. If we move to a standardized system at one point, my vote is it's like one of those I think @WildeThing said this first, that programs should be more transparent about acceptance dates and about what interests they're looking to add/have room for in the next cohort. It seems really shite to me that they aren't, considering the hours and dollars and hopes people are spending applying to schools that they may have never had a shot at, simply due to the inner workings of the department. I feel like the lack of transparency is a real holdover from pretentious and exclusive academic days of olde, and don't reflect the realities of why people get higher education these days, and the cost of doing so. All this being said, I actually enjoyed applying. Not so much paying over $400 to ETS, but the rest of it. Hitting that first "submit application" button was one of the happiest moments I had all year, which maybe means I need more hobbies, haha, but there it is.
  9. Anyone want to claim the Oregon State MA acceptance?
  10. We have some funny people in here, y’all are cracking me up and lord knows we all need as many laughs as we can get rn ?
  11. Comic sans would be an instant offer decline for me ?
  12. 144 quant here I still got into an MA and waitlisted for Ohio’s PhD last cycle ??‍♀️.
  13. Is it just me or has spam email production gone up about 1000% this week? I keep getting the most random junk I feel I’ve never seen before. Like I just got an email from ticketmaster, a company I probably haven’t even thought of, much less used, since the early 2000s. Wth? Why, universe???
  14. I think, if I were that prof, I would be much more interested and excited to talk to a potential student who did a great job of pulling apart my argument than one who just agreed with it. You got this!
  15. My dad graduated high school not ever having learned to read, so I feel like I can kind of relate. It’s amazing and humbling to realize the privilege and joy of an education, especially when you’ve seen the challenges that come from not having that privilege.
  16. Penn State University Psychology, PhD (F19) Rejected via E-mail on 23 Jan 2019 ♦ U 23 Jan 2019 report spam The rejection wasn't as ugly as the font used in the email.
  17. One of my professors said she was careful to include things about personality/work style/response to criticism/classroom engagement etc. in her letter of rec for students because departments want to pick candidates with whom they think they will like working. Personally I'm surprised more programs don't interview
