I had contacted them by e-mail about a month or so before I submitted my application, but I certainly did not talk to them at length.

Good luck @beckGJJ! I hope everyone is doing well! I've had two interviews so far so it feels good that there is at least some interest in my application, but I'm still so nervous ?I can't wait for this process to be over with and to start making plans for next year!

I also had an (informal) interview with a POI at one of the schools I applied to and it definitely sounded like the POI had read my application materials, but they also noted that the committee had not yet met.

It was sent to me and my friend as well so I think they are sending it to all applicants. Though surely by this point it means that you've made it past at least the first review? I should think.

Would it be a mistake to write my book review for Yale's program on an anthropology book? Or would this potentially make them question my interest in or commitment to history?

I don't study literature, but I would agree with this post: I do not get a clear idea of what exactly your proposed project is and how you think it connects to your past experiences and future ambitions. You say you are interested in studying (and improving?) the ways that diverse groups of people communicate with each other, but what exactly will this project look like? How do you propose to extend this project from an analysis of literature to a tool that could be used to aid in the way people communicate with each other? Have you worked on this project in the past (perhaps through a class project?)? If so, I think it would be wise to detail your experience with that project and how you intend to build from that. If you haven't, I think it would be good to be as specific as possible, especially since from the way you have presented it in this sop it seems very ambitious and vague and I would question your ability to accomplish your project. "Her work on Flannery O'Connor and how her life as an author intersects with the time she wrote" Is there any way you could make this less ambiguous? In what ways did she argue that her life intersected with her times? -
You should be fine as a lot of schools seem to be quite lenient about accepting late recommendation letters. When I applied to MA programs last year one of my recommenders was two weeks late, but it didn't seem to impact my application in any way. However, I would contact the schools you are applying to just to be sure.

I wish the statement of purpose requirements for all of my schools had a 1200 word limit instead of the average 1000 limit ?

I'm applying to Northwestern, Chicago, Harvard (HEAL), Yale, Princeton. What about you? I did actually think about applying there! I didn't apply for kind of a superficial reason, but to be honest I couldn't see myself living in LA for that long... I prefer the east coast too much!

I study 19th century Japanese history and my MA thesis is on a certain minority group during the transition period (I'm trying intentionally to be as vague as possible of course ☺️). December 1st is coming so quickly!

You aren't the only one! I am mostly applying to History programs, though one application is for a joint EALC-History program.

It is quite late in the year, but I would just like to encourage everyone to contact the advisor you are interested in studying with before you submit your application. So far I have received replies from every person I have e-mailed and they have all been enormously helpful in different ways. One POI who I thought was a good fit sent me a polite but fairly discouraging reply (basically hinting that she didn't see herself as being a beneficial supervisor for my project), and now I can save $100 on that application and the grief of rejection that would likely follow in February. Other POIs were very encouraging, confirmed I would be a good fit for their program, and have given me advice on what they think would make a good application. One thing this process has done (and I am not sure this is a good thing) is cut out many programs that are great but just don't feel like a perfect "fit." My thinking is that if I am having trouble writing an enthusiastic justification for e-mailing them, I probably should not waste their time with an application. So now I have cut down a list that was previously 6 schools into a list of 3. I have been advised to apply to a few "safety schools," but the process of e-mailing POIs has made me feel that I would rather take my chances and apply to 3 schools where I feel would be the best fit for myself and my project. But I can't help but feel this is risky.
