Fall 2019 Clinical Psychology Applicants (PhD, PsyD)
xxxxxxxxxx replied to xxxxxxxxxx's topic in Psychology Forum
For the clinical programs you applied to- Are you applying for child clinical? I could see how your special ed experience could be an asset to these. And don’t worry, I am doing the same... have you read my username LOL. I’ve checked my email at least a smooth 21 times today. Just “casually login in” to see absolutely nothing ?- 328 replies

...Why was this thread not a thing?! LOL The main psychology thread has gotten so overwhelming with people across so many different areas. It’s too hard to keep up. I also enjoy reading the invites vs. the applicant threads separately. All my fellow Clinically Psychology PhD/PsyD applicants, please feel free to keep this specific thread going with your thoughts, worries, comments, exciting and depressing stories, and all in between... We are all in this miserable hell of a ride together for at least another month or two lmao.. #canitbeoveralready

As a previously-rejected applicant :), I've learned that Academia and clinical psychology specifically is all about connections. Who are you working for; who's advocating for you and who's recommending you are all crucial in interviews and admissions, apparently... Wish I would've known this two app rounds ago LOL
-
If I was you, I would send an e-mail "I was actually able to coordinate my schedule and will be able to take the opportunity of meeting you in person.." Something along those lines. GO IN PERSON! In person >>>>>>> Skype, especially if you know other applicants will be meeting your POI in person. It's just part of the process, in-person allows you a deeper connection versus Skype.

*Yawn* How is everyone feeling this lovely morning? My inbox is still Sahara dry since December 1st. I have a feeling all invites for the 4-6 programs I'm stalking are coming out this week. An emotional wreck all over. On the plus side, I was introduced to the Chair for my #1 program this week by my current PI. They're BFFs and have been working with each other for over a decade, and we had a pleasant convo/pre-formal interview/chit-chat in person. It was pretty unbelievable how perfect our meeting went. So I got that going on for me.... Which my pessimistic self is telling me after-the-fact it means absolutely nothing at all LOL!

THIS. Thank you! A colleague of mine got into a very competitive university with an awful quant score, it was about 20-25% percentile. She is now a second year student, fully funded, and extremely happy! -

I def. will sit this one OUT LOL... I wouldn't want to rub any professors the wrong way. To me sending an e-mail at this point looks pushy/impatient and inappropriate. Trusting the process over here -

All of these programs are extremely competitive (300-400+ applicants), and they do not send invites until January I applied to several of the ones you mentioned. Good luck! -
Your focus/interests are very broad. All programs are generally (by APA mandated standards) supposed to address cultural competency/diversity. Do you mean programs who focus on marginalized groups? Increasing evidence-based practices to such populations? You need to narrow this a bit. I'd recommend for you to look at the research literature focusing on these areas (or any other areas you think of) and then narrow down the experts/authors and institutions who are working on these topics you are interested in. Use psycINFO, pubmed, etc. That's how you'll be able to easily pin point who's leading this work/who you'd like to work with in your graduate education.

I didn't apply there, but it's safe to say when the DCT/Program coordinator sends out mass e-mails, they've completed their review for initial in-person invites. Sorry, this whole process f*^&cking sucks. I've been there before! -

Need to “be on?” Can you clarify this? Also who would be impolite or unprofessional in their conversations with a potential advisor/lab mates? Is common sense not that common.. lol ? -

It’s safe to assume “Email from POI” means it was a personal e-mail, meaning the applicant heard directly from/was invited directly by the POI. -

Same. I think what's most difficult for me is that individuals at my workplace/lab who are also applying this app round do not talk about it(?). Everyone is applying to similar schools, very similar interests, and clearly some individuals are much more competitive than others... And it's this weird, day-long, awkward silence in the hallways... I guess we can all not talk to each other from now until March? Lol what! People are so silly
