Totally overwhelming. It's part of applications/acceptances/rejections that I think often gets ignored/overlooked because of how hard everyone has worked to get to where they are. It can feel so trivial to be distressed about moving away or finding a new place to live within your means, but GOOD GRIEF am I ever emotionally drained thinking about it all.

Well... I am currently balancing a range of emotions right now -- We have to leave our apartment because our landlord is selling. Found the most beautiful home I have ever seen in the best location and put in a rental application. Just found out the landlord went with another couple with a baby. A very different kind of rejection than schools obviously, but I am crushed. Even though it's maybe for the best since I have no idea where I will even end up/be accepted to for grad school and would potentially have to move out in the summer anyways.... Sorry for the slightly off-topic post, but I feel like all the different kinds of anticipation I have been carrying around with me and the stress about schools, moving, etc. has been a lot.

Fall 2019 Clinical Psychology Canadian Applicants!

Same here! -
Also just going to mention, I’m 99% certain you already posted this topic on reddit. The first poster who replied to your comment on reddit is correct and most of what you will hear on gradcafe echoes their sentiment: if this is what you really want to be doing, take a few years to get your GPA up, relevant coursework, and research experience.

To add to what @checkingmyemailhas said, you often cannot even register to be a psychologist (which is what this person seems interested in) if you don’t have foundational courses in psychology. Many clinical programs specify the minimum coursework in psychology required to apply, which would take at least a couple years to complete. Not only that, but I can’t see how OP would know that they want to be in a clinical program without any foundational knowledge beyond psychoanalysis/the 20th century and no contemporary understanding of the field. To me this suggests that OP is not familiar with the field at all nor does he/she know what most psych PhD programs (not only clinical) entail. OP, you should also keep in mind that a 3.4 GPA is pretty low for clinical programs; the students you will be competig with for a spot typically have higher than a 3.5, with a psych degree, and research experience. All that said, it’s not impossible for you to get in to a clinical program with some post-bacc coursework and research experience, but maybe take some time to look into the contemporary field of psychology and see if it interests you before committing to more coursework and research experience.

Ok so I think I need to find a way to block gradcafe from my browser for like a day... I swear when this whole process is over I will STILL be checking every 30 minutes out of habit. Because, you know, knowing about one of the schools I applied to contacting applicants RIGHT NOW is so much more important than getting shit done in my day ? -

Yes!!! I feel like you mostly see acceptances/successes on this website, which makes those who have been rejected feel more alone when, in fact, they aren't. I will be part of this pact to normalize rejection and will let ya'll know if/when I am rejected! Thank you @higaisha for saying this! -

Fall 2019 Clinical Psychology Canadian Applicants!

Nope, but they historically tend to contact applicants in the last week of January. -
I'm less clear on funding, but do know of graduate students from the states with funding -- it's just a little more complicated. I know that York (in Toronto), Simon Fraser University (in Vancouver), and University of Guelph (in Guelph, Ontario) all have child specific programs. However, across programs that are not child specific there are also individuals working on research that is focused on parent/child outcomes that would be well worth applying to. In the US, Minnesota has an amazing group of child-focused faculty, as does the University of Oregon.

Are you interested primarily in programs in the USA?

Nothing yet! But Friday last week I got an email from the grad program secretary asking about some parts of my application for clarification, so I would assume the admissions committee are just getting to looking at them now. But not positive! -

Hmm that’s a tough one. I would just send them an email saying you hope everything is ok and that you can eventually connect. It’s definitely possible something personal came up for them, so I’d give them the benefit of the doubt for now... sorry to hear you’ve been put in that situation, that’s really not cool. -

Do you guys think forking out the money to attend an in-person interview is better than Skyping in? I know they say they don't give preference to in-person interviewees, but.... I feel like they do haha -

Question for people getting interviews!
chopper.wife replied to WhatLikeItsHard's topic in Psychology Forum
Similar to @spookycat, but with a couple caveats to consider: 1) I am in Canada and, despite Canadian schools being very competitive, some US schools are just bonkers with the number of applications they get; and 2) I have only secured one open-house interview/4 so far (none of my other schools of interest seem to have reached out to anyone yet), so I am not necessarily the golden child of interviews. That said, I also graduated with a high GPA, etc., and have worked in research labs to some extent for 4 years. I worked as a paid RA for just over a year and am working as a lab coordinator currently. I only applied to schools with PIs who closely matched my research interests. Because I am interested in a fairly specific area, my current PI has worked with/has connections with many of those I applied to. I think this will help me with potentially getting interviews, but that's obviously not 100% the case with all applicants. There are SO many unpredictable factors that come in to play when admissions committees and individual supervisors review applications, some of which (at least in my opinion) are simply about serendipity (i.e., applying to the right person at the right time). If you have a specific person you're wanting to work with, I would say try to tailor your CV to their area and work with other PIs who are connected to those people. Best of luck! Don't give up hope yet, you still have 3 schools to hear back from! -
Fall 2019 Psychology PhD Applicants!
chopper.wife replied to dancedementia's topic in Psychology Forum
Fully get that! I'm just sorry to hear it's been such a rough ride for you along the way. I'm not sure how old you are, but my psych degree was my second degree, and I took 2 years off in-between the two. So I am about 5-6 years older than those I graduated with and will be 34/35 when I finish (if I get in this year). It can be frustrating to see those younger than you reaching a goal you have so much earlier than you ever could have, but if this is what you truly want, I think it's worth it! Not to mention, I know many graduate students who are older, it's not at all uncommon. Anyways, not trying to convince you one way or another, but just suggesting that being older and getting into the career you want later in life isn't necessarily a bad thing. If anything, I have heard some of the older students are better able to manage the stress and work/life balance of graduate studies, so I could be to your benefit! Wishing you all the best with whatever you choose!
