Has anyone heard from UT southwestern medical center, their application page is currently out of service! I am so nervous, on idea if it is a routine Maintainance or a preparation for status update.
Heard from them the Thursday before xmas via email. They only displayed 2 weekends when I took the survey...the 11th and 31st for neuro and about 30 kids each

Thanks! They said it would be about 15 minutes, so I guess I'm just trying to figure out what could possibly occur in that time frame. Maybe just trying to make sure I'm not a serial killer?
Ask you about previous research, motivations, career aspirations, why us...see how you articulate

Does anyone have advice (or an email template tbh) for contacting programs to see if all interview invites are out? Would reaching out hurt your chances as an applicant? I don’t think I can handle waiting 3 months for rejections again lol
I would just call. Dont have to give a name.
"Hello! I'm an applicant to this year's program, and I'd just like to know when we could expect notification of interview invites."
If they're done, they'll say they are. Sometimes on schools' sites in the FAQ, they'll say around the dates you are no longer being considered if you haven't heard anything. Dont need a name to get the info, so you won't have to feel like a pest.

Does anyone know how standard it is to get a Skype interview before an actual interview? Just got an email at Texas A&M and was wondering if I should be excited as I am closer to an interview in person or if this is standard for all applicants.
Happened to me at Chapel Hill's PhD in Pharm Sci. They called it a pre interview. It is essentially a filtering process. On a Monday we had pre interview via Skype. Friday they called me with interview offer.

Does anyone know if Vanderbilt IGP is done sending out invites? I saw people got interviews pretty early on but their site says they do them in small batches so I'm just curious.
When I got to select my weekend, I saw dates well into March. There's still hope!

I'm guessing your friend either got an unofficial invite from a POI or applied to the behavioral neuro program (not GPN).
I apologize. Though she's interested in neuro she actually applied to the pharmacology program. Didn't mean to worry anyone

UNC BBSP has sent all interviews, they have a waitlist and people might be coming off it until mid-January. I think someone asked the admissions department.
BU, if you mean Boston University Graduate Program in Neuroscience, won't be out til end of January.
My friend heard from BU before xmas.

As far as UNC, I'm not sure of their other dates. I was told my date...which is the weekend of 1/31. Offer was extended via email 12/14

I didn't apply to any schools that required the GRE which I think hurt my chances, need something to set myself apart I think. And yeah, I totally get what you are saying about applying to safety schools, but I also want to go to a school that's a good fit for me at the end of the day. If it's a safety school, I've already deemed it to not be what I want in my mind, so I think its just not the right choice. To be fair, I actually got into medical school this year but wanted to give neuroscience PhD a shot as I love research and have worked in research for the last 5 years. So, it's not like I'm stuck or anything. Just wish this would've worked out so I could really explore research as a lifelong career.
You can always do research as a clinician and work in academic medicine.

The one upside to all this is its now safe for me to book some vacations for next month
This thread and others like it is a great tool for people at the same stage to help each other and ease the stress of applying and matriculating. I hate to think that the sharing of good news for some brings so much sadness to others. Keep your head up. It's not over until it's over.

Dont give up! A lot of schools are looking for more now. Many great programs are dropping the GRE requirement. Also, I know you may have your ideal schools but applying to more safety schools can be the trick. Placing all your hopes in 7 schools doesnt mean as much if they're Stanford, Harvard. Yale, or UC-whatever. Apply to more within reach or mid tier schools. Reach out to some faculty you're interested in working with.
Edit: it's okay if you dont go to a top 10 grad school. What's important is the work you get done and what you learn and the experience. You can always do top 10 for postdoc

They will likely already have your CV in front of them. I printed out a bunch and over 7 schools and who knows how many interviews never had to pull one out.
As far as previous research: if there's something about your research that's really not easy to talk about without visuals, feel free to bring a visual aid, but it really isn't otherwise necessary. You're having a conversation, not giving a presentation. If you can just discuss, that works.
You don't really have to have read about any of their work or have preset questions about their work. They'll tell you about it there and you can ask whatever you want to about it. If you happen to be super interested and just have a question that you didn't plan, great, ask it. It shouldn't seem inorganic. I read a ton of papers before my first recruitment weekend, couldn't keep em all straight in my head, and they never came up because they all just started telling me about their work without asking if I already knew about it. Didn't prep for the rest of the recruitment weekends.
I have to emphasize that it's supposed to be a conversation with someone who could one day be your mentor. They know you're academically qualified. They want to see your enthusiasm and personal skills. They want to get to know *you*, so be yourself.
I know you're not giving a presentation. But there some that do want impromptu presentations...I've seen a few. It makes for ease when discussing some works. And yes they may know your background, but it still doesn't hurt. Rather have and not need than need and not have.
I didnt mean to come off as you need to be a robot and have everything all figured out, but it is important to seem like you have an idea of what's going on in the industry and what attracted you to that professor.
Being as prepared as I can be makes me more confident and I can leave knowing that I did all that I could do to rock my interviews. People take notice to details. It sets you apart. At the end of the day, do what makes you comfortable. If you can trust the process and be more of a "wing it" or "go with the flow kinda person", do you.

First interview at WashU is coming up within a week.. Anyone has suggestions for what to prepare and what to expect for the interviews? Thank you!
Your previous research. I'm bringing a digital copy on my flash drive and printing out my posterboard on a piece of paper. CVs couldn't hurt. Also, prepare questions for faculty and grad students that cant be answered on their website. Prepare yourself for some questions other than research related too. If you want specifics, lemme know.
Come business professional. Always the most formal. Address people by the formal before the tell you otherwise. Never break character even around grad students. Everyone is judging you. Everyone is watching! They will report back!

I found the form, thank you! Do you know how to determine if you are exempt from backup withholding and FATCA reporting?
Skip that part. Says it's only for certain entities...not individuals. You are completing the form as an individual. Fill in that you're an individual, your name, address, SSN, signature, and date. Fax, photograph or scan the first page only to BBSP. Easy peasy.

First time. 13-15 schools. 5 interviews thus far.

Thank you so much.
My undergrad gpa will be close to 3.0/4.0 gpa in us scale. I should have applied to more schools but my decision to apply to states was a very sudden one. I applied a week before December 1st and arranging for money and all documents took time and I missed many deadlines like of Emory University, Umich Ann Arbor and Vanderbilt Neuroscience asked for GRE scores as far as I remember.
I reached out to few faculties, a few of them replied saying that I can apply to the universities grad program.
Yes, but more so emailing faculty members whose research you're interested in. It may help you. They may out in a good word for you to admissions.
"Dear Dr. (blank),
I am applying this season and am interested in your work with (blank). My background fits in as I have done (blank)."
Then you could ask for a phone or Skype to talk about what's currently going on in the lab, etc.
I would try this with at least 1 faculty member per university you're applying for.
Good luck!

Hi
I am an international student from India. I needed help with my profile evaluation
- My Profile: Working as an RA(research assistant) in Computational Genetics since 1 year and a half.
-
BE in Biotechnology from Private university(2013-2017), Bangalore
CGPA: 7.55/10
Research experience:
Summer Internship in neuropsych lab
Final year project (5 months) : Computational neuroscience -
Will my application be badly affected because of low CGPA?
TOEFL score: 98; GRE: 308, 3 strong LORs, 0 publications, 1 poster presentation - I have applied to universities which does not require GRE.
- APPLIED: Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine, U Alabama(Birmingham), U Cincinnati, UMass Medical School(Worcester), UT Southwestern Medical Center, UT Health Sciences Center, Brandeis University, University of Oklahoma health science center, University of Buffallo
- Rejected: Icahn School of Medicine
- Any chance of getting in these applied universities? or am I aiming too high? Please help
Thanks in Advance?
Definitely a chance! And there are so many more great ones without GRE! I say this in case things may not go so well this go round. That includes UNC Chapel Hill, Weill Cornell, Dartmouth, UPenn, Harvard, Stanford, WashU in St. Louis, and Vanderbilt IGP.
I think you stand a chance (pretty good one depending on how low of GPA you mean by low), but you should have applied to at least 3-4 more safety schools...just so you don't end up empty handed. An even spread of high to mid tier schools...especially you being international...is key. I ended up applying to about 15 schools! Thus far I have 5 interviews. But it's a chance I may not get in even after that---despite decent times to a few of them.
So yeah...great programs...and dont be shy to reach out to some faculty you're interested in!
