  1. It was confusing to me too and I just now figured it out, 2 months into school. GEM fellowship is basically an agreement with GEM and your school saying "If you accept this student, your school agree to cover their tuition and fees for up to 2 years (MS) or up to 5 years (PhD). GEM will send a portion of stipend money only for the 1st year (Freshman), the school is expected to make up for the difference". If you are selected as a fellow with an employer, you will work go over the summer as a paid Intern with whatever company chose to sponsor you, such as Intel, Los Alamos Lab etc. This is mandatory, no exceptions. Not sure if many companies will still allow remote work for Summer 2022 with the vaccine, so you may be expected to relocate for the summer. Since it's based on initial acceptance of a student, I am not 100% sure if you would qualify as a second year but it doesn't hurt to email GEM. If accepted as a fellow with an employer, your department at Brown would cover your tuition and fees, GEM sends $16,000 towards your stipend and Brown is expected to cover the difference so that you make the average GRA/GTA pay.
  2. I sent all of mine in late march and still have not. From my understanding, GEM does not update the portals promptly but as long as you have confirmation that the transcripts were sent and received, you should not have to worry.
  3. @jerryhooSo, I’ve personally still not heard from NCSU, but just received a great offer from OSU and have decided to pursue my studies there instead. Really liked NCSU but the risk of waiting until after I the 15th to hear from them is a gamble I’m not really comfortable taking.
  4. Thanks! I received the offer in the GEM portal first but it was only a few hours difference. It's literally like a pipeline of forwarding messages. And your universities GEM rep is the middle man. I think it'll be easier to reach out to the department than checking the portal too much
  5. I was in the same boat until a few hours ago. Everyone else mentioned the same steps that I took, but also let your GEM internship company know. My GEM company told me I had to submit a offer letter by April 15 (give or take a day or 2) but I would not have the May 1st privilege. It could be that the schools are trying to find you money to cover their remaining balance of having a GEM fellow since GEM does not 100% cover tuition stipend and fees. Rest assured, everything will work out! Best of luck.
  6. Honestly, it depends on what you want. All are great schools. Ask yourself, "Can I see myself living in this city for X years?" "Is the advisor at X university, someone I can see my collaborating with for X years?" "Does X University have the resources I need to be successful in my PhD Program? (Example: Organizations for students majoring in BioMed, Writing Center, Library with extensive access to publications and journals that you may need to cite). Choosing a school should be picked based on what suits you best! Best of luck on your journey.
  7. WVU was my 2nd choice before they rejected me. NCSU POI told me on Friday that I'm pretty much in the same situation. They are waiting to see if any 1st round picks will turn down offers, if so, then I'll hear something the week of April 15th.
  8. One of the GEM Universities I applied to informed me that even though I have the internship and company sponsorship, they don't have any money to cover the additional funds GEM requires so my application will probably get denied and I just ? Now I am really confused how this fellowship works
  9. When did you apply to NCSU? I submitted my application later than normal (3 weeks ago) and now I am wondering how long it takes to hear a response.
  10. I applied to another graduate program last week,(03/09) but now I am worried that it's possible I wont hear back until June/July? Well past the April 15 deadline... Anyone else apply as a late applicant and any insight? SN: I emailed the department 03/12 for confirmation of submission and that they received all needed materials, They said my application is currently under review which I guess is good??
  11. $15/ hour is low for the LA area. However, graduate school is not meant to provide anyone with enough money for us to be "comfortable". If you are unable to pay your rent and get food with the $15/hour. Speak to your advisor and the graduate school about alternatives.
  12. I had a POI ask me to send more information. Most departments want to know 1) if you are coming in with funding 2) What that funding will cover 3) How many semesters/years you will receive this funding. Here is what I emailed: "The National GEM Consortium Fellowship was designed to connect highly qualified graduate applicants to 150 Universities and industry leaders, in areas such as research and development and product development in Science, Technology Engineering or Math. Applicants are required to be under-represented groups in science and engineering as defined by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, in addition to : submit ting GRE scores, minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0/4.0 and must contractually agree to intern with a GEM Employer member the Summer immediately after sponsorship. The GEM fellowship program provides fellows with full tuition, fees, and an annual stipend provided by a sponsoring GEM University and sponsoring GEM Employer. The Ph.D. science fellows (what I applied for and was offered) receive support up to the fifth year of their PhD program. After the first year of support through GEM, fellows are required to accept research or teaching assistantship, or other financial support through the GEM member university."
  13. I noticed the same I was hoping to see a long thread of people. Especially since a lot of schools waived 1-2 requirements for this application cycle due to covid.
  14. Does this very per program? I emailed a POI for the Geography department about an external fellowship I received, he said my overall application was still pending. He also said he hasn't heard word on fellowship awardees
  15. I hope you found your answer by now. I spoke with a GEM rep today because I also received a fellowship offer finally. Still waiting to hear back from schools, but the GEM rep told me that when you see the contract on your portal, download it and print it out for your records. Then you can email that contract to GEM reps at the universities you applied to.
  16. For anyone else who is still waiting to hear from an employer there's still time. My GEM portal has been on matched since early December, I just got an email from a lab yesterday for an interview. Keep your head up the game is far from over. #SecondTimesACharm
  17. I hope everything works in your favor! I did not get accepted into the 3 schools I applied to last year and had to withdraw my GEM application in April (Unmatched in March, so wasnt a big deal to me) The time off allowed me to save up and this year I was able to apply to 6 schools. I am sure next cycle, if you do decide to reapply, will be more benefitting to you!
  18. I withdrew my application for a school I was waitlisted on in April when they informed me that due to the unexpected circumstances, tuition reimbursement and stipends would be cut for incoming students. Hoping that department has properly readjusted their funding for Fall 2021 applicants
  19. Hi Y'all! I see no one has started a thread for the 2021 application cycle yet, so here we are! Application are beginning to close. Best of luck to everyone who is applying. I pretty much copied and pasted the subjects from the 2020 thread, but feel free to answer whatever you wish! 20. Hey Y'all 2nd time GEM applicant. Applied last year, was anxious and stressed, did not get matched until February, then released in March, and denied from the 2 schools I applied to in May My opinion, is to not stress at all. GEM was super delayed with everything and I do mean everything from updating the portal, sending emails, starting the webinar on time. I checked my portal every other day last year and it only made my anxiety worse. This year, I submitted my application in October and I only checked my portal 5 times since. Checked the portal today to see I was matched so I'm keeping my fingers crossed, good luck to everyone!
  21. I tried to keep a positive outlook on this year with everything going on but at this point, I give up. I have never suffered from depression or suicidal thoughts but now I just want to lay in my bed forever, cry and starve myself. Denied from all PhD schools, My thesis is STILL not done (Supposed to graduate this MAY), 1 of my parents are out of work, I just tried to apply for apartments since PhD is a bust annnddd I "failed" the background check like wtf I'm not a criminal my credit score just hit "Good" 9 days ago, now that's my hopes, dreams and $300 gone down the drain.
  22. Does anyone think scholarships will accept an extension deadline too? A scholarship that I have been awarded said in February that I need to confirm the university I am attending by April 17
  23. So far I only heard of 2 universities in Chicago and 1 school in Louisiana that has rescinded offers for prospective Fall 2020 students. Extremely small schools though, I would not worry about it
  24. In my unpopular opinion, employers (even those not through GEM) who cancelled summer internships in early March jumped the gun. I feel like they could have at least put people on standby with updates on the internship as time went on, or considered pushing back the start date like mine did.
