Oh that’s a good point, I’m interested in working in a medical setting so perhaps should’ve noted that in my field placement form too... Oh well, I’ll plan to just discuss with my advisor! And did you just create your email? I created mine in late April and didn’t receive anything for the longest time. But I’ve since received a few already, one from my field advisor last Monday, then 2 earlier this week.

And I found that you need to search by the following numbers: Look for Fall 2019 semester -> Hunter College -> School of Social Work and then input the following course numbers: 70150 Policy and Services I 71150 Human Behavior I  71700 Social work practice lab  72150 Clinical Practice I  76100 First Year Instruction Hope that helps!

I sent my form in early May and I just heard from my advisor on 5/17. During the 5/13 pre-orientation meeting, we were told we should be hearing from our advisors in the next 2 weeks, so you should hear back sometime soon! FYI I’m a 2 year full time student. Advanced standing students should’ve heard from their field advisors already (though if you were just recently accepted, that may delay things).

Congrats on your acceptance!! To answer your questions, I didn’t end up tailoring my resume. I submitted my field placement form and my field advisor emailed me to set up a 20 min meeting to talk over the process. I haven’t had the meeting yet (it’ll take place in early June, so don’t know the details beyond that unfortunately). But it seems like we don’t have much options in our first year, so we’ll likely be placed depending on agency needs and proximity to where we live. I’m not aware of a database of placements, but maybe you can contact the field advisory office and ask? I’m from Queens, so the placement options probably differ from Brooklyn, but they’ll aim to place you no more than 1.5 hr commute from where you live.

I think the only way to figure out professors/times is by navigating the student center on cuny first and look under “search for classes”. I think there are pdf tutorials available, but your best bet would probably to just play around in the system. Yea, they spent a lot of time showing us how to navigate the cuny first system! They recommended adding courses to your shopping cart now, so you can quickly check out during registration tomorrow. Let me know if you have more questions about this, but you can find out what classes to register for on the part of the website that outlines the 2 year track curriculum (so we need to sign up for 5 classes: Human Behavior 1; Social Policy 1; Clinical Practice (or community organizing, if you’re not in that track); Field Practice Lab; and Field Practicum). FYI Accepted students day: you really didn’t need to go. The professors briefly talked about field of practices and then we were dismissed to mingle with each other (which was cool, but not crucial!) Pre-orientation (I had mine 5/13): mainly discussed how to register for courses, field placements, and fin aid. Pretty useful, especially if you’ve never worked in the cuny first system before! See notes below: Hunter Important Dates: ◦ May 16- class registration begins ◦ Aug 30- mandatory field placement overview session ◦ Sept 9- field practicum starts Let field placement form know when you’re gone during the summer because that’s when background checks happen Within 2 weeks from today, we should hear from field placement advisor to set up in person or skype interview 3.0 gpa min to maintain federal loans (gpa and completion rate of completing courses on time) For fin aid purposes: Professional judgment—you have a meeting to discuss changes in employment status. Not an easy process. Lots of forms to fill out. Fwsjobs@hunter.cuny.edu (you fill out mock form and it’s a first come first serve basis) Nextgen (where all jobs are available + where scholarships are) Bursar (sends bill) vs Fin Aid (distributes loan)

I had asked someone in the office and it didn’t sound like either were strictly mandatory, but she highly encouraged me to attend both, or at least pre-orientation. I think pre-orientation is more important, since they’ll review class registration stuff. Accepted students day seems more for networking/connecting purposes (from my understanding!)

I think @Yve_ is an advanced standing student. I’m entering as full time and I haven’t heard anything from my field advisor yet—I did also just submit the form last week. Hope that helps!

What a rollercoaster of emotions—sorry you had to go through that!! I haven’t heard of this happening before, but if you wanted to put your mind at ease, you could try calling the office and confirming your acceptance letter. I hope it all works out in your favor!

Ooh ok, I’ll submit it asap too then. And where are you seeing the classes/list of faculty? I’d love to get an idea of what the options are (though are we all basically taking the same classes/there’s no flexibility?)

I haven’t received anything regarding field placement, other than the forms that are available on the website. I was planning to fill it out and submit now, though wasn’t sure if I should hold off until accepted students day or pre-orientation, in case they have more info for us then.

Thanks so much for linking! Are we supposed to know which classes we should sign up for? Are we expected to make appointments with our advisor(s) in advance? UPDATE: I called the office (because 5/1 is rapidly approaching and I have 0 idea what classes we should even be signing up for) and they said 5/1 is the enrollment start for current students. For newly admitted students, our enrollment window will likely open mid-May—basically sometime after our pre-orientation. So we can just sit tight for now!

Does anyone know when registration for Fall 2019 classes will start? When I check CUNY first, I only see enrollment dates for summer classes. Thanks!

Those are 2 great options, congrats! I think it depends on where you see yourself after graduating. If you know you want to end up in NYC, it might be a good idea to go to Hunter (and unfortunately take on debt) because the NYC social work market is pretty competitive and it’s better to get your foot in the door sooner rather than later. If ending up in NYC isn’t a firm requirement, then it’d be more financially sound to go to VCU and take advantage of the in-state tuition. And I’m not sure what the job market looks like there, but you can probably look in neighboring states like Maryland or DC if for some reason you can’t find a job in Virginia (but that’s probably highly unlikely!) and sure, NYC jobs may pay more but the cost of living is really insane. I’m only able to afford going to Hunter/staying in NYC because I’ll be living at home. Does your 25k debt factor in cost of living already? At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with either choice, it just depends on what you prioritize (having less debt upon graduation? Living and working in a very diverse (also expensive!) city?) And it seems you’ve already compared the 2 programs academically, but I think the education we’ll all get at the end is pretty standard since both programs are CSWE accredited. Good luck with this tough choice!

Just to provide an update regarding setting up Hunter email—turns out there isn’t anything extra we need to do! Just log in to @myhunter.cuny.edu using your cuny first log in credentials. Glad that was simple enough. I haven’t received any emails in that inbox yet though.

Oh, I’m not sure I know what you mean by that— I thought our cuny first email was our Hunter email account? Update: turns out the cuny first account is different from the Hunter email account! I haven’t received any info to set this up—has anyone else?

Hey! That’s odd, I had no issues setting up my email. The subject line of the email containing cuny first instructions was: “You have been activated as a graduate student at Hunter College”. I think the office is Hunter College Graduate Admissions. The email states if you have any issues, to contact the Student Help Desk at 212-650-3624, so you might want to try that. Good luck with sorting it out!!
