I think it generally refers to the US and USNews is the one which is generally used but I also like using THE. I have some problems with the methodology of USNews and QS

I was not invited to or interviewed, too. But I e-mailed the school, and they told me to wait until Mid- to Late- February for finalized decisions. So, don't lose your hope. Which area do you want to work on?

Thank you for the information. I heard that they are very theory focused and one of the top schools for political theory. I am strictly IR, and as a secondary field, I am interested in methods and comparative politics.

Thank you for your kind words  I think this application process thought to me that I love political science slightly more than sociology. Also, sociology programs are super super slow to answer applicants. I only heard back from one sociology program, but I heard back from 4-5 political science programs. You are very right about the geographical constraint. My only regret is that I wanted to apply Georgetown (a bit of a stretch but I may have worked it out with my husband) a lot but the application fee to two different programs was so expensive, and I did not apply. Except for that, I do not have any big regrets. If I need to apply again (which currently I do not think so, I think BU is the best fit that can ever happen to me), I may try to work on my GRE and SOP a bit more.

I feel you. My friend and I are in exactly the same situation. I e-mailed last week, and they told me the results would be out soon. However, it has been a total week, and there is nothing. I am 99% sure that I will get rejected. I just want my closure.

It can be very defeating. Last year I applied to 11 schools, all ranked in the top 100 but spread out throughout the rankings. I only got one wait list, that didn't open up, and no acceptances. I already have a Master's so I ended up taking the year to study and retake the GRE, reevaluate fit for the schools I was applying to, work out much more personalized SOP's and made them individualized per program, and I started an independent research paper that I submitted to present at a conference (luckily it was accepted) to boost my CV some. Like you I have some limits on my applications this year but instead of location, my limit was how many I could afford to apply to. In the end, I could only apply to 5 schools this year but I already have an acceptance and had an interview from another school (that I should hear from any day...). Sometimes taking a step back and reevaluating whether this is really what you want and where the best fit is can be a huge benefit even if it doesn't feel like it when you get all the rejections and you feel delayed a year from your future. Hopefully my experience helps.

    Two things:
    1. This process is absolutely brutal. I don't know any person who would go through this and not have the very same feelings. It's one thing to understand on an intellectual level all the things we know about how admission decisions can be arbitrary, how lots of extremely impressive applicants get denied every year, etc. It's a whole other thing to get there emotionally. After all, we are pouring out our thoughts and ideas and shiniest accomplishments onto paper for the purpose of being judged. That's a really hard thing not to take personally.
    2. Something that has been helping me deal with rejections (in addition to all the stuff about it being arbitrary and what not) is that the people making these decisions are looking at a much reduced version of you. You can only glean so much from some stats and a personal statement. If you have racked up all the signifiers that told you you'd be a good fit for those schools, you were probably right and just got unlucky. Trust the sense of self you had when picking schools to apply to. I was really spiraling after getting two rejections in the same afternoon and then picked myself back up the next day thinking that it's a shame I wasn't accepted because I am going to be an awesome grad student and I'm sure they would love me if I was there. Can't say I always feel that way, but it's a start.

I know how it feels like... I have been "officially" rejected from 3 schools, with some implied rejections from many schools that I thought I would have a shot. This whole admission process has been extremely stressful. But just one application doesn't, and of course can't, represent you as a whole. You still got into BU! This might not be the best encouragement I can think of, but I think it is amazing to have an acceptance in such a competitive process. I just like to think there were too many stellar candidates this year, not that I am underqualified. Let's just have tons of good food and shake it off. You'll have better deals from other schools!!!!

Nope. I got in Boston University for political science but I did not hear back from their sociology program. I think they still have some time for sociology results because sociology deadline was way later than political science deadline

To all the UMass Amherst rejections: sorry. I am in the same boat. An annoyingly wild ride from last night until now. Not entirely surprised by the rejection, but surprised it came in this manner so early in the month.

I saw some UMass Amherst rejections but I am not able to get into the portal. It shows nothing because the portal does not work. I am not sure what to make out of this

Exactly what I was thinking. I was very surprised to hear from them so soon. They weren't even on my radar for at least a week. But I will try to take this as a good sign. From the digging I've done on gradcafe, the earlier you hear back, the better. I guess we will see.

So anyone else get an email from a uni that said to check the status of your application only to find it says "update pending." Read the email again and it said a formal letter will be posed in the portal 1-2 business days. First off, why tell me this at 12:41 a.m. on a Saturday morning when I have to wait till Monday or Tuesday.
Second, this sounds like a rejection? Don't acceptances typically have "congratulations type of email" or a phone call. Why not just tell me outright.

That's crazy. But at least they don't drag things out like Northwestern. I didn't apply to Northwestern but I absolutely hate how this school handles admissions.

UCSD comparative. Very excited. For those who don't have an acceptance yet -- don't lose hope. You only need one.

I did not get any admit or reject or waitlist. My top choice is Harvard, Brown and UMass Amherst. They both have good programs and several people who work on political sociology, gender, and politics in general.

I've said for a while that political science major requirements should essentially be what is now a political science major plus a stats minor. But of course then lots of people who want a "humanities" major wouldn't do it and enrollment in the major would drop drastically.
