My masters advisor does not want me to succeed
whiskerplot replied to Dragoncita's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
I'm so sorry you're going through this. It sounds like your advisor and labmates are putting a lot of undue stress on you, and if you still have a year to go in your program it could take an incredible toll. As long as your finances or completion time are not affected, please do try to switch advisors. I couldn't imagine trying to tough it out in a lab like that. This situation might be a temporary period in your life, but it could have a lasting effect on your wellbeing. Take care of yourself, physically, mentally, and emotionally! -
Most, if not all, of the graduate institutions I applied to (including my undergrad college) offer graduate housing. If you're applying to a high-rent area like in Silicon Valley or San Diego, then grad housing is typically cheaper than off campus but is also in high demand and could have a waitlist. Where I'm going, grad housing is roughly the same price as you'd find off campus, so it all depends on your location. If grad students have the option to purchase meal plans, it would most likely be optional. Otherwise, you might be able to load some kind of campus cash onto your ID card and use that to get AYCE or a la carte meals as you wish.

University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign - Fall 2019
whiskerplot replied to Snik's topic in Meet and Greet
I will most likely be going to UIUC this fall! My major is ECE and I'm also looking for an apartmentmate or 2 -
I feel you. I try to focus on the acceptance I do have, and if people ask "What about XXX(school that rejected me)?" then I just say that the program I'm going to commit to was a better fit for me. Even if I were accepted to a higher ranked school, there's no reason to automatically choose it. Fortunately for me, not many of my friends applied to grad school this year, and we're all on the same boat. So our conversations are mostly like "Hear back from anywhere else?" "Nah"

Easier, and way more expensive for 1 room than it would be for a whole 2-bedroom apartment. Plus I'm really particular about roommates, i.e. must be gay and love my cats!

Now that I have one acceptance my biggest worry is whether I'm going to get any more or not. Can I pull the trigger yet and commit? Can I sign a pre-lease on an apartment and look for roommates? CalTech doesn't release decisions until MARCH. ?

What does it mean to not get an interview?
whiskerplot replied to greenturtle's topic in Waiting it Out
It depends on the program, but not getting an interview doesn't necessarily mean rejection in general. I didn't get an interview from one of my schools (and they did do interviews) but I still got an acceptance. Best of luck!- 6 replies

The Silent Toxic Stress of Being a Minority in Academia
whiskerplot replied to JustCallMeDoc's topic in Waiting it Out
I'm a gay woman in a field where there are typically very few women, and just last year someone big in the field was charged with sexual harassment of a female graduate student. It sucks. My male colleagues think I'm overreacting when I bring up that a man is toxic, and of course all men think that a female applicant has a higher chance of getting into a program with "lower" qualifications, so then when I don't get in, I must be like beyond stupid or something. @JustCallMeDoc I'm sending love and good luck for the rest of this application season. Sometimes what keeps me going is the thought that my presence in a space I don't "belong" might make some kind of change for those after me. -
What were you doing when you received your acceptance?
whiskerplot replied to YA_RLY's topic in Waiting it Out
I usually check my email/application portals at least once every 30 minutes, so I decided to throw myself into a programming assignment to get my mind off it. I was completely occupied with debugging and testing, so I wasn't at all prepared for the email notification that said "University of Illinois Admissions Decision." I clicked it without even thinking and saw I was accepted! After I spent about 5 minutes absorbing the letter, I called my girlfriend to cry tell her the good news. -
Post here to get your worries off your chest

Worries: One week into February and I have zero decisions besides 2 implied rejections! Excitement: I REALLY clicked with one of my interviewers a few weeks ago. Like, "getting noticeably excited about each other's work and going on tangents so long that we end up not even talking about research anymore" clicked. They said they'd recommend me to the adcom and it's my dream school! Hopefully this has a happy ending...- 274 replies

I'm not so much anxious about getting rejected from all the PhD programs I applied to as I am about not knowing my future plans. As someone who likes to have a course of action waaay in advance, I can't stand not knowing exactly what I'll be doing just six months from now. If I do get rejected, I'll (begrudgingly) stick with my backup plan of getting my MS first, but for now I feel like all of my time researching housing options/degree requirements/potential PIs in advance for my dream school is just going to waste

What were you doing when you received your acceptance?
whiskerplot replied to YA_RLY's topic in Waiting it Out
I received my first decision/acceptance on my 21st birthday. My dad took me out to dinner and I got an email with my official acceptance letter right before the desserts showed up. It was a nice birthday surprise! -

Worries: too many... I applied to 8 PhD programs, 7 in top 10 and 1 at my current undergrad institution but it's still highly competitive. I don't feel like a top 10 student My plan B is attending a fifth-year MS program but I was really hoping to get out of here and not have to apply all over again. Thinking about Bay Area rent is also making me very anxious even though I haven't been accepted anywhere yet! Excitement: I got 3 strong LORs and three interviews scheduled over 2 different schools, so at least I have some strengths!- 274 replies
