Thanks for starting this thread! I have one Columbia TC interview coming up next week. I also applied to Harvard TEP, but that program doesn’t require an interview. Waiting with anticipation until March!

Post here to get your worries off your chest

Worries: I worry that this application cycle for grad school will be a repeat of exactly 10 years ago when I was in high school and applying to colleges. I worry that despite my scores, experience, and writing ability, they’ll just say in the end that I’m not qualified for the program because I don’t meet the prerequisites and that will be that. Excitement: If I do get in, I won’t even know what to say... This will make up for all the indecision and changing of fields that I’ve gone through in the past decade. I’ll finally be studying what I love at a school I’ve always wanted to go to, working towards a career that I should have chosen long, long ago.- 274 replies

Columbia University Teachers College Fall 2019

Hi. I’m applying to a different program (masters), and I did receive an invite to an interview/open-house event that will be in February. The thing is that the applications were due mid-January, and I submitted them at the very beginning of January, and they sent me the invitation just a few days after that. I don’t know if it means anything. My specific program does require an interview, but I didn’t know they would even start going through the applications until the deadline. Maybe I’m just overthinking it. -
Relax. He’s just posting his thoughts on an anonymous message board while he waits for results, just like everyone else is doing. It doesn’t require therapy or an intervention with family members.

If you get invited to an open house / interview event, is that a good sign? But an interview is required for all applicants to that particular masters program, and the event is listed on their school calendar so that anyone can RSVP to attend. So in that case, would you say that the invitation email is just sent out to everyone who applied for that program and doesn’t really mean anything more?

Hello. I have a phone interview for a masters program I’m applying to (in education) since I’m currently abroad (but not international student). I have a phone interview coming up in a few weeks. In the email, I was told which two people (one professor and the other a faculty member) will be speaking with me, and it was just a confirmation of the date and time for the Skype interview. The person who emailed me didn’t give me the emails of the interviewers (though I guess it’s available online) and just told me if I had any questions to let them know. It seemed kind of generic, except that they addressed it to me. So my first question is: Am I expected to reach out to the two interviewers to show interest in the program or something? Or do I just wait for the interview? I hear so much on this forum about POI stuff. Is that related? (This is just masters though.) Also, the deadline for my program was January 15. They said they wouldn’t even begin looking at applications until then. But I submitted my application almost two weeks early, and shortly after that, they sent me an invitation email to an open-house-and-interview event for that program. (An interview is required for my program.) Other than my name, the email seemed generic. But it had a broken link to an RSVP page, so someone from the admissions office personally wrote to me with more information. And that’s how I signed up for the alternate Skype interview. Do you think this a good sign (since I got an invitation before the application deadline even passed)? Or do you think this is just something sent out to everyone who applied for that program since they require an interview? I heard that PhD applicants usually get rejected if they don’t get an interview. But I’m not sure about whether that also applies to a masters program’s open-house-and-interview event, especially when an interview is required for admission. Any advice/comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

Okay, thank you. That gives me peace of mind.

Hello. I had two professors and a supervisor at a university program I worked on write me LORs for two Ivies I’m applying to for masters. The program supervisor submitted her online LOR with her first name showing as “Self-Employed”. (She was an outside consultant for my university.) Since I waived my right to view the submitted LORs, I don’t know whether she wrote her full name anywhere else. I can just see that the universities I’m applying to received LORs from a “Self-Employed [last name]”. Her email address has her first and last name showing. But do you think this will affect my admissions in any way? I’ve already submitted them before the deadline in January and didn’t think anything of it as it seems to be such a small mistake. But now I’m just wondering. Thanks.

Regarding the HGSE financial aid application (if you’re applying for masters), when you activate the account using the ID and activation code from the email and then log in, are you able to click any link for the actual financial aid application? For me, it says that it will be available in early 2019, but there’s nothing to click. Just wondering if everyone else is getting the same thing.

Yes, I have. Got some emails about how to log in. Also applying for masters.

Hello! Has anyone applied for a Masters degree (for teaching certification) in Social Studies at Columbia Teacher’s College? Did you hear anything back about an interview?
