Physicsisphysics reacted to BCHGang in NDSEG 2019-2020
This is one thing I find a bit odd. No feedback. I can understand it's a lot of work, but it gives closure and help us improve. A learning experience ! ?

Physicsisphysics reacted to Metals_123 in NDSEG 2019-2020
I submitted my application way back in october, never got a validation email only the initial one, and was a finalist last year. The date indeed has not changed from 10/22. So either they lost my application behind a dumpster or I didnt make. Or option 3, this website has already been doing bizarre things and perhaps the dates are yet another.

I'm still at 12/05, applied for AFRL. I wonder what it all means...

tell me about it, the wait for fellowships sucks since it can be 3-5 months before you hear back ?

Physicsisphysics reacted to GradNt in NDSEG 2019-2020
My friend and I both applied for "Computer and Computational Sciences" for AFOSR and we both have 12/23/19 for last update (same as @urmum). My friend won GRFP, so they're definitely a strong applicant. Based on the data above, it looks like the date is based on your discipline and choice of BAA.

Physicsisphysics reacted to pchemp in NSF GRFP 2019-2020
Does anyone else think that Honorable Mention is pretty worthless for the GRFP? They say you could put it on your CV, but isn't it basically announcing you weren't good enough for the actual award? I guess I don't understand the point, as we're applying to be a GRFP fellow, not for some strange pat on the back from the NSF. Full disclosure: got HM and was pretty excited reading half of the first sentence of the NSF email, only to be pretty disappointed by reading on. ?

Well if it gives any of you a nice giggle today, I was looking through the documents I submitted and realized that I legit left "Sometime next decade" on there for NDSEG. LOL

I think it's ~2000 and depending on year somewhere between 5-10%.

I believe it’s about 5% so pretty competitive.

I didn't get it either or even honorable mention. Feels kinda crappy. I told myself that it was a long shot to not get my hopes up but I'm surprisingly disappointed. There are some existential doubts about my abilities that I'm feeling like what yayareaforever commented.
In hindsight I sort of rushed the application but idk I thought it was pretty good. Hopefully the feed back from the reviewers will be constructive at least.
On a positive note I applied for two more fellowships that I haven't heard back from yet and one is an even bigger award than the NSF!

Physicsisphysics reacted to captivatingCA in NSF GRFP 2019-2020
I wasn't awarded, and I definitely felt a bit of a ding after reading the email. But I've started to look at the things that have gone right for me so far. Personally, I'm just happy that I'm going to grad school. Even if the NSF is indicative of ability (which, as jstop28 mentions, isn't necessarily true), a rejection isn't a death sentence to my scientific career. I have a lot of time ahead of me to learn and develop, and I'm looking forward to seeing the reviews so that I can figure out what areas to improve. While the validation (and money) would have been great, not getting the fellowship doesn't fundamentally change the calculus of the next few years, and it won't stop me from pursuing my goals.

Lol. I’m trying to limit myself to checking every half hour. That and binge watching netflix will hopefully help, but my heart rate is definitely up! I have a lab meeting early tomorrow morning and I would die if I could tell my advisor and labmates I got it.

What's your field of study?
Also they called back and said not to worry about the date and that 'everybody' is still in the running. I'll trust them on this.
