Fall 2021 Clinical & Counseling PhD/PsyD
pomegranateleaves replied to clinicalpsych.2022's topic in Psychology Forum
It'll come guys ? the pandemic has caused the majority of schools to completely conduct their interview weekends online. This is unprecedented and very different from what they have done in the past, so they have had to completely redo their entire system. I wouldn't be surprised if we'll be hearing from them later than usual in general. They cant do anything in person. Can you imagine the department individually going through applications online, needing to schedule Zoom calls that work with all of them, and continuing to deliberate on those online on their own computers??? That sounds so nuts to me man. I mean, they might have done this individually in the past too, but I always pictured a group of people sitting in a room with the applications displayed on a screen where they can all talk to each other in the same space and point to different parts very easily. Plus, the influx of applications is going to cause them to take longer too -
I'm not sure if that would be ethical in the reviewal process - like, that seems like borderline nepotism. That would only probably help your letter of recommendation in the sense that, if your professor knows the letter writer, that indicates that you have experience working in the field in some sense or have been able to build relationships with people in your field (such as PTSD research or whatever). They will probably place more emphasis on another aspect of your application, like GPA.

Gradcafe is love. Gradcafe is life
-
I think that we (in thegradcafe community) are just taking a break at the moment because the uptick caused a lot of fear, stress, and uncertainty. Also, I definitely agree. I've spoken with multiple professors on my campus and they all said that this is similar to what happened in the Great Recession - a lot of people without the required experience are applying right now because of job uncertainty. Applying last minute to a grad program your senior year of undergrad (when you never worked in a lab) or years in a job that doesnt give you the skills or experience necessary isn't going to be successful. I assume that those applicants also dont even know that thegradcafe exists

Fall 2021 Clinical & Counseling PhD/PsyD

Hi everyone! It's finally the weekend! I doubt that anyone should be hearing about any interviews during the weekend, so I echo the post above. Take a break and take care of yourself! -
a very similar thing happened to me. I have math anxiety, which caused me to really struggle learning math in High School specifically. A lot of the GRE quant section uses math from that time period, so when I did my first practice test, I got a 140 in that section. After studying for a year, I was repeatedly getting around 160 on the quant section (timing myself and not using a calculator or anything). But, when I took the GRE, I got a 143 on my quant section. I don't understand how. I took the GRE 2 years ago and didn't bother retaking it for this cycle. All but one of my schools waived it, and after speaking with the program that didn't, I was told that the professor I applied to work with doesn't ever look at scores anyway. Best of luck to everyone applying this cycle! If theres one good thing that came out of 2020, its the GREs being waived

Fall 2021 Clinical/Counseling Interview Invites

It looks like the University of Tennessee (I'm assuming Knoxville) is sending them out too - at least in the Experimental Psych program so far -
Apps are done! Now what? Emotional support time!

I was in a lab meeting earlier this morning and the PI said almost the exact same thing! Me and fellow people who applied for doctoral positions asked him what he thought about the surge. He essentially told us not to worry - he expects that a lot of the new applicants don't have applications that are competitive. Which was a huge relief!- 51 replies

It's my second time applying too!! I applied in 2018 last time for Fall 2019 admission. I received 2 interviews then but unfortunately no offers. I was so CONFIDENT this time because of how hard I worked - plus learning from what I didn't do as well last time. All of that confidence just like went down the drain. I'm so scared but I'm trying to hang in there and stay positive. If you dont receive any interview offers it's not because you're unqualified - the odds are just literally stacked against our favors in the most turbulent year we have ever lived. Not to mention, we are also in the middle of a pandemic???- 51 replies

God I feel that ?? ? I worked really hard on my applications too. It just sucks that so many super qualified people this year will mostly be rejected just because of the surge of applications. I wish you the best of luck!!!- 51 replies

My app for UC Santa Barbara was due on 11/15, and their website says that their first round of interviews are going out in December and second round in January. If any of you had 11/15 deadlines, I'd guess maybe December too? I'd guess we'll hear back from other schools either reaching out or offering interview offers in January or maybe even early February -

I only got the notification that one app closed and was sent to departmental review for the one school. Regarding the rest, I meant the like thank you for applying emails when I was talking about the confirmations. Sorry if I explained poorly earlier! Haha- 51 replies

Haha! Same - my emotions keep flip flopping between being super anxious and worried, thinking that I'm going to be rejected from all of my programs, to then being super excited and hoping for lots of interviews. We're all in this together! Sounds great! I'm doing the same. I picked up guitar during quarantine and have neglected it during application season. I'm not good by any means eyet but it is definitely super fun and a great source of anxiety relief for me. Oh my god I know - I have final papers coming up and I have seriously neglected my masters thesis. Time to start working on those! Haha- 51 replies

Hello everyone! Most applications were due today so congrats on getting them in! Now we need to sit back, relax, feel the anxiety, and wait for interview offers. I started this this thread so that we can give each other emotional support during this time. I know I'm an anxious and excited ball of emotions and will probably be checking my inbox daily for the next couple of months. I'm sure many of you are feeling the same way! May we wish each other all the best.
