The grad program lead emailed yesterday to say they are offering students the option to defer to next year with all of their funding. He said it might be a good option for international students to consider. That could potentially get the waitlist moving.

I've been taken off the waitlist at Indiana! Just received my formal offer today and I have to say that I'm relieved/emotional/over the moon. I'm going to get a PhD!
I'm still on the waitlist at Michigan and will be sending them an email on Monday to check on my status there and to let them know that I've been offered a doctoral position at IU. Fingers crossed that I can make my final decision soon and start my journey to a PhD in the Fall!

I was in the same exact situation as you were in in 2018. Emory was also one of my dream programs and I got waitlisted there. Other posters already answered your question, but to add on, I think I waited until the last couple of days before the deadline before moving on and what I had heard was that if only a few more people had declined their offers, I probably would have made it in. I think I was basically at the top of the waitlist, but things didn’t work out

Emory, like other departments, is shrinking its cohorts. Typically, you will get an offer when someone else declines. This can happen after the invitation to campus. IDK when Emory holds those.

Procedures vary from one program to another.  You should ask the DGS at Emory how it works there AND cc your POI.  Be sure to emphasize your interest in the program and how it's your top choice. If they say it's a ranked waitlist, ask where you stand. Stay in touch, especially after visitation day at Emory (whenever it is...).

I was wondering if anyone knew about waitlists. Do they admit only the exact number of spots they have? Or, do they admit more than the number of spots, assuming there will be a some people who won't accept the spots?
I'm primarily wondering about Emory. I'm on the waitlist and it is my top choice.  I was looking at the data on the website and it looks like last year there were 10 offers made, and 5 eventually enrolled. So just wondering if 5 offers were initially made, and then they went to the waitlist, or 10 offers initially were made and from that 5 committed.
Sorry if this has already been asked somewhere and hope this question makes sense!  Thank you all!

quite a lot to unpack here. you assume that I’m not using this as a way to put a better application forward next year which is quite a big assumption to make. I’d like to recontextualize: I said I was a bit put off by a rejection not being BCC’d. For you to take that and then imply that I’m not listening to advice, am more concerned with being “right” than growing and many of the other things you have implied in your response is quite the assumption.
The people on this forum are humans. We have reactions in the heat of the moment. Not everything human beings do is always about “helping to build a dynamic that encourages experienced members to stay and continue to help”. For this to then be applied on a bigger scale to “this is why academic historians don’t like speaking with undergraduates” is again a big assumption to make and if anything just highlights the issues with gate keeping in academia as an institution and the way it treats the human beings who make it up, something that I have consistently had to deal with as a marginalized person.
I’m relatively new to this website and I’ve learned a lot of things about the grad school process. People have been very kind to me. The way a small comment has been blown out of proportion and the way I’ve been mischaracterized and told I have an attitude because of it is very disheartening and doesn’t make me want to reach out and in the future.
That’s all I have to say about this. Have a good weekend and I hope we all can be kinder to those on the other side of the keyboard.

Good, important, and timely points about water off a duck's back. In the grander scheme, it is self-defeating to dwell on rejections, and there's really no nice way of turning down someone's application. Best to dust yourself off, keep your composure, and move forward.
But unless I'm misinterpreting the initial complaint, an admissions office CCed people other than the applicants regarding decisions made about their applications? If so, it's a fair complaint about a lack of professionalism and veers awfully close to a violation of applicant privacy. That institution might want to review its procedures.

Ugh, the radio silence at some schools is killing me today. I could really use some good news.

@HistoryMan1001, this is the kind of question that sends a message one doesn't want to send, especially when it is asked in the clear, if one's objective is to be known for tact and discretion.
(And asking the question privately is not, IMO, a sustainable tactic.)

Gotta say, I expected there to be way more activity this week. Only a few schools have sent out decisions

Has anyone heard from University of Minnesota? It looks like in past years their decisions came out in January.

Confused about this Harvard acceptance result, especially since it's only one person. Wouldn't DGS presumably email everyone at once?
God, this wait is KILLING ME.

Currently grappling with the reality that I probably didn’t get into Penn and UVA based on a lack of communication. I’m just reminding myself that I worked hard to get here and that no matter the result, nothing will change that. I hope it works out for myself and everyone else but just remember there’s always next year and if we are truly passionate about this field of study, nothing will keep us from eventually reaching our goals ? good luck everyone

Another Chicago acceptance was posted! Would love to know what region/time period the acceptances are in. I felt Chicago was a bit of a reach for me, but still anxious to hear back.

After sending an update on my research that I didn't have in time to include on my applications I got the following responses from two POIs:
Harvard: "Regarding the application process, yes, it is going on. By now the field’s recommendations are in the hands of the department’s admissions committee. So we are all waiting for their judgement."

UVA: "We're still reviewing applications, and I believe the admissions committee will meet in the next couple of weeks. At this point, faculty in the various geographical fields have made their recommendations, but it's now out of our hands: it's up to the committee to compare all the candidates against each other and determine how many admits each field gets. It typically announces its decisions some time in February."   Does anyone know if they'd volunteer this info if I wasn't recommended? Or is this just standard and being polite?    Hopefully this info is helpful to people applying to these schools regarding the timeline!

Same as everywhere else. Professors review the applications that pertain to them, send 0-3 promising apps to a dedicated committee, that committee whittles the pool down to what they want to take that year and sends the list off to the grad school for approval. The grad school sends out the admissions letters. Some professors like to reach out when they know a candidate has been sent to the grad school for final approval; others wait until the official announcement goes out. The rough dates when the official announcements go out have been very consistent from year to year, and can be found simply with a search of the results forums.

At Emory:  applications recommended by POIs are going to the graduate committee, who makes final decisions on admissions, on Friday or the latest on Monday!

Same is true with Wisconsin, for any applicants on this board. I'm on leave, but I still check my emails pretty regularly, so I'll tell you guys as soon as I know.

You can search “history” on the results page. Most schools have yet to release any decisions. Based on results from previous years, many schools send out their acceptances around the same time (i.e. one school informs all of their admitted students on the same day, another school does so within the span of a few days, etc).
