  2. Oh, another great old thread!
  3. I don't know about Berkeley but these online apps seem to be created to confuse us potential students (or may be to test our skills and cunning - an additional cut-off tool) I would contact their grad coordinator and say: "I was not able to upload my writing sample [no need to go into details]. Can I email it to you?" or something similar.

  5. I've never seen a school that would ask for two SOPs. Are you sure that you understood that correctly? Instructions on their websites can be extremely confusing...

Oh, what an unusual cheating method! I have not heard of anything similar. So how did this one person regurgitating information could help others to pass the test? I am just not particularly familiar with how testing in US universities works. Hence the question.
  7. Applications submitted. Almost no stress. Yet.

  9. That is indeed a surprise

  11. Have you written that just now, just for this post?? Fascinating!!!
  12. Are you sure you need to answer that? It may be one of those questions that you can skip and that's only there in case you have not covered your teaching interests and experience in your SOP. I had such questions in one of my online apps and first I was racking my brain to write good answers and then I fugured out it was in case I had something very very special to say
  13. Don't replace it. Adcoms may not even notice them (they have so much to read!) but they will definetely notice scanned copies and memos
  14. Surely you can apply from abroad, I did - I am an international applicant I guess it is easier for me than it will be for you because I have my transcripts and professors here, in my country. But for you as well it will definetely not be impossible. You schold contact your LORs and request transcripts well in advance and then it'll be fine. Of course you won't be able to visit schools in order to make the right choice. Or will you? That's one thing I really regret not being able to do... It's good that you have already started to think about these things!
  15. Yes, you can go out during the break. It would be cruel not to let people to go to the bathroom! They gave me a booklet of paper with four leaves (8 pages) and it was green or may be blue, not lined.

  17. OMG, I loved this old thread!! Please, please, somebody, write more stories! [six word memoir of the moment]

  19. Unfortunately some professors seem to have forgotten about the times when they themselves were humble applicants

  21. I guess there are a lot of people in a similar situation (myself included) who won't be able to visit schools because we are international applicants. It's sad that I won't be able to visit my schools in order to make a decision but I am going to use all other possible sourses to get info about schools. First of all that includes talking to your prospective advisior and to grad students who are already in the program. There have been many threads on this forum discussing what are the right questions to ask. Obviously, they'll be the same as those you would ask if you came to se these people in person. I think that even if they do not ask me for phone interviews before acceprance (which I highly doubt) I will ask my potential advisiors to talk to me. Taking with a person can tell you more about them then just exchanging emails.
  22. Well, if your enrollment does depend on it - the only thing you can do is to say the truth, I guess. I know that my enrollement depends on funding so if I had been asked such question I would have answered "yes" because I know that this situation will not change.
  23. I think you can email them now. And if they do not react soon, you can even call. As Bhikhaari have said, it's unlikely the professors will get mad at you for that. The earlier you notify them, the earlier they will submit letters. Just write them a polite email explaining the situation. They will understand. And good luck with applications!
  24. Hi! You are definetely a strong candidate, no doubt here As for the verbal confirmation, it seems tricky... I have read quite a lot of old threads on this forum and at the boards like "Waiting it out" and "Decisions, decisions" I found several stories about people who had been encouraged to apply to a program by a professor/director of the program and then got rejected. I am afraid that a promise of this kind can be easily broken in academia... That does not mean of course that what the director told you does not matter. It is a very good sign, I think. You just need to stay realistic and remember not to put too much hope in these promises because til you have a written acception from the program, you have nothing... That's the sad truth. But again, you seem like a very strong candidate so I am sure you will be accepted someplace. I would not recommend you, though, to put all eggs in one basket and apply only to the aforementioned program based on the kind words its director said. Because things happen. Good luck!!
