  1. Well, every program says on their websites that you do not need a degree in it to go to graduate school in it.
  2. Good luck everyone. I hope you all get into your top choices.
  3. I preferred the letter so when I screamed I didn't freak anyone out.
  4. Rising star- I forgot about fellowships. Thanks for pointing this out. Grades do matter when applying to fellowships. I geuss the reason I forgot about this is I don't consider it an option since my gre is below 1200 and I know the gre score is one of the major factors they base fellowships on. Well at least the ones that would consider your grades.
  5. I take it you wouln't finish? This would be tough since your ask professors where your at or your current adviser for a rec which means you wouldn't be finishing. Also, you wouldn't have a completed masters thesis as your writing sample. This would greatly improve your chances. Do you have buyers remorse? Also, if you do ecide to apply will your classes transfer? Mind you if you are in a 1-year program why not apply.
  6. Just saw this is wanted to explain to everyone before they get disappointed. No where do you get a degree in forensic anthropology. You get a masters/phd in forensic science or in anthropology. Forensics falls in the subfield of physical anthropology. Most forensic anthropologist are professors and teach physical/biological anthropology. However, most do this on the side with their interest being in the field of anthropology. Only a handful of jobs are out there for straight forensics and they are all taken with people with no retirements in site.
  7. If you are a phd student, grades don't matter as long as its a B or an A. No one will ever ask to see it or care about grades. However, grades are not given in every program I have seen. You get the grade you earn so be very proud of your A.
  8. Your right, you must be professional in your work too. Luckily in real life I am. I have been doing a ton of research and I am tired when I get home. Sometimes I don't proof read an online message for an online forum.
  9. Im sorry if a lot of people don't like my previous post, but it is the truth. Reason why most people with the tattoos don't see it is because the academic field is full of two face people. They would never say something to the individual but professors behind their back talk plenty. I was privilege on a few conferences to be including in this. Professors ridicule other professors for allowing their students to be unprofessional like piercing, having tattoos, how they act, and/or how they dress. Mind you I have only been to the big very formal conferences but I figure everyone on here would have the goal of working for a big university if you went into academics. Also, I am sorry if you fell I'm cool since I have tattoos and no one will stop me for this. I know plenty of those people in previous programs and current programs. They never/don't knew/know what is said about them but if it came down to two people from the program applying, professors would write a very strong recommendation for the professional one and an average recommendation for the unprofessional one. Just be professional at conferences and don't embarrass professors. If you have sleeve tats so what wear a long sleeve at formal events. I know my friends who cover them up for class might be overkill but they dont want their tats affecting their lives in later life. As for my lucky I don't have tats comment, I meant no disrespect. Why I said I felt lucky is because when I was 18 I almost got an ugly, non-coverable tat and to this day I dont know why I didn't get it but I am thanlful my 18 year old self made the decision not to get it. I know I would of hated it from the second I got it. So for me it was lucky, for others it is a personal decision and one that I know a lot of people think a lot about it before they get it. And I didn't mean to imply someone was unlucky if they have a tat. Just me I would of gotten it for the wrong reasons and thus I am lucky I didn't get it.
  10. It is a huge deal in the anthropology/archeology field. If you have tattoos you are recommended to hide them. I have seen people at conferences with visible tattoos not get introduced to certain people by their adviser based on this. Its embarrassing for all parties if you have visible tattoos based on the unprofessional attitude it provides. Luckily I have no tattoos but a lot of my friends do, and they cover them up for every conference they attend. Also most of them will cover up their tattoos for school based on wanted to only portray the upmost professionalism they can. However, for department functions like bbq or christmas parties they don't cover their tattoos.
  11. Not to be mean but maybe your in the wrong field. You have to find the right field to exceed and be happy in life.
  12. Florida doesn't do interviews either
  13. He asked about consequences so I told all potential consequences. And yes if they sue they would win that's why just get the release. And yes profs talk all the time and when applying for jobs in academics it may hurt you.
  14. Once you formally accept an offer you must get the school to officially release you or they can take legal action and make yoyou pay the full cost of your program even though you didn't go. Not to mention Profs may try to black list you in your field.
  15. I moved from a small city to a large city for my masters and now back to a small city for my phd. I prefer small cities but big cities has their advantages.
  16. Reputation of both your adviser and school can play a huge role in you getting published. That's why selecting where to apply and ultimately who to study under is so important for both publishing and getting a job.
  17. Well you could always have the prof email the rec directly to this.person or have them fax it to the department. When I was sloping I had a lor go missing at one school so the prof just faxed it in with no problems.
  18. Normally they tell you this on their website.
  19. Why not apply to both?
  20. They are allowed to. I've seen them do negative recs when I go talk to Profs sometimes they leave open recs they are stirring and they are not flattering in anyway. Luckily I got all great ones when I applied since they all felt the need to also email me a copy even though I had checked to not see it
  21. It's their reputation on the line so their be as honest as possible id at least that's what I would do.
  22. My understanding it is hard to get an academic job and even harder from a nonusa school
  23. What I meant was to look at the history of when they notify. Like the program I'm in will notify you if your accepted by late Feb but if its a rejection they won't notify you until late April.
  24. Don't forget the results page gives you guidelines in when certain departments will notify you. Every department and every discipline is different so even current advisors don't always know best for other schools. I know what got my into my masters program and multiple phd programs in my field so I try to help out where I can.
  25. Professors can't predict your final grade and do consider you actions if say you have a 79.4. I would be livid if a prof gave someone with a 73 a b and I had a 87 and got a b. Not to be mean but you chose not to drop this course and the prof never said he would drop the test. Academics is a small community. Be careful. Actions always have consequences.
