  1. I was poking around and couldn't find discussion on this, but if you know of a thread, please direct me there!

I'm trying to decide whether to apply for a second MFA, this time in poetry (first one was in fiction), and also considering applying to creative writing PhDs. I know that some MFAs explicitly state they won't accept applicants who already have an MFA, but I wonder if that also holds true if the applicant wants to work in a different genre than before.... Does anyone have any thoughts/resources on this? Thanks!

Ugh, when am I allowed to email Rochester about my portal saying "decision released," but not actually showing the update??? I feel weird about it because I literally emailed them last Monday for a status update... I don't want to bother them too much, but dangling a decision in my face for three days is just RUDE.

I don’t think it would be bothering them too much. If there’s a problem with the system, they’d probably want to know anyway. I don’t think they’d decide to reject you for asking a reasonable question.

Just laughed out loud at this while dealing with my own rejection. Lucky for me that rejection hit in the middle of my therapy appointment and my therapist had also been rejected from UT Austin one time and was all "HOW DARE THEY REJECT US"

How are y'all all so good-natured about this? I cry every time. The jokes only come later.

Everyone grieves differently I guess. I spent more time crying earlier in the season and now I’m p numb to it all. I have a job at a cafe that I really like and live in a town where I have cultivated a lot of friendships, so I’m like, well it’s not like I’m in a totally horrible situation... I was sort of scared of the workload of a PhD anyway so I guess this is kind of a crappy reprieve? I applied to 14 schools and got fully rejected from all of them, though, which is a first for me for college/grad school apps. Cheers to breaking records! Wheeeeeeee!!!!

It's truly a tough year. I do think that's the case. I don't think I've seen a year where so many, many talented people got rejected by every single school they applied to.

It’s pretty shocking. Two of the smartest folks I know had to apply twice, even in non covid times, so I’m reassuring myself with the fact that it’s hard in general and nearly impossible this year. Still sucks tho! At least we have good memes and satire (your amazing essay) to get us through.

I only have Michigan left and I went to a state school, so no hope there. I've decided I'm going to write a book, this year, and publish it out of spite. This process really fucking sucks, guys.

We are in the same situation, I feel your pain. If you are a creative writer as well, there are a few cool residencies, fellowships, etc that are accepting apps now. Personally I’m consoling myself by applying to more things and pretending I’m unbothered by all this rejection, all while setting myself up for more (probable) rejections. It’s a great strategy I know!!!

Wondering if anyone else still hasn’t heard back from Virginia? I’m 100% sure it’s a rejection, but wondering why they haven’t released them all at once

One theory I had — I saw that at least one rejection was recommended to the MA program. I marked that I was “not interested” in the MA on my application form, so maybe that put me in a different set of rejections, folks who wouldn’t be considered for the MA?

Most likely because they need to know how many of the people admitted turn down their spot since this would affect how the waitlist looks like too? It would probably be a lot more awkward and labor intensive if they were to send out rejections the same time as admissions and they end up with 2 spots that weren't taken and need to backtrack on the rejections.

This situation happened in my MFA a couple years after I started, people on the waitlist had already accepted other offers and admissions had to dig into the rejection pile which was awkward to say the least.

Has anyone received an email from UVA called “University of Virginia Graduate Diversity Resources”. This is my first communication from them... anyone accepted?

Also just got that email... annoying bc I’m fairly sure they’ve already sent out all acceptances and waitlists and I’m just waiting for the official rejection, so this email is totally irrelevant to me lol.

*edited to add: Not trying to discourage hope here, I’m just grumpy af at this point in the season. Good luck to us both!!

Also, I keep seeing people in the results saying that they checked their UCLA application portal, but mine doesn't say anything. How weird. Maybe they haven't finished posting all the rejections, and I'm at the bottom of the list ???

Same! I’ve already crossed it off my list in anticipation of a rejection but it’d be nice to be able to make things official. ?

Mine has said this for a long time (v early in January). From what I’ve gathered it doesn’t really mean anything.

Oh interesting. Before today mine always just said “Your application is in review.” Same meaning just a slightly differently worded message. I hate how all the application systems do little glitchy things that stress me out.

Well this is a helpful consolation to keep in mind in the event of my probable rejection, thanks! :)

Wow, so many of the top schools seem to be halving their cohorts this year—UVA, Harvard, Yale, Chicago, etc. not to mention those not accepting at all, like Columbia, Penn, Brown... what an application cycle.

Yeah, it’s disappointing, but also sort of reassuring to know it’s just an extra difficult year.

How large are the biggest English PhD cohorts, and which programs? I was reading that UVA has ten people per cohort but self-describes the PhD program as “small”—so how big is big? I’ve heard cohorts will be smaller at many places this year, but I’m curious about a general reference point.

Not an answer to your question, but I know from someone at UVA that they’re only taking 6 PhDs this year.

Jeez, I'm really losing my mind bc I feel like I just don't hear back from anyone lol. Could you let me know if you hear anything? good luck :)

Never got an email response but just got an automated email to check the portal and it was a rejection, dang it! Did you hear back?
