  1. well I've got plenty of stellar options, and trying to be very frugal is increasingly difficult. this will be tricky, but decision dates are not far off so I will have to figure it out. will update

    Hello all,

I just got accepted to SAIC sculpture and MICA Mount Royal (Interdisciplinary)

I have a really hard time deciding between two programs. Does anybody have any insight? Thanks in advance!

I can answer questions about life at MICA/Baltimore, but not the grad program

  3. ITT we discuss offers for funding we get from programs, weigh our decisions, and give helpful advice, leaving a record for future applicants to check out. This hasn't been done since the 2015 thread, and things have likely changed a lot since then.

Future people: If the program you are trying to learn about is not mentioned, try out the 2015 thread: https://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/63611-mfa-arts-2015-funding-and-decisions/

Boosting, I’m gonna have to counter a few offers as well. Any advice on how to navigate this?

I was reviewing this thread, y'all might want to also. maybe we should start one for this year? Interestingly, it was made on the exact same date as today

Yeah, I haven't heard either way, but no interview so I'm assuming a rejection.

hmm well that seems possible, I also did not get an interview. however I am determined to promote ~good vibes~ ITT so perhaps it's simply that they're so entranced by the quality of your portfolio that they haven't been able to stop looking at it long enough to send your acceptance letter :^) optimism!

Boston University sculpture just sent out acceptances :) They reduce their graduate tuition for art students by half already, and I received a 50% merit scholarship on top of that.

HUGE congrats!! amazing that you got such a generous offer, you must be very skilled!

of course, this makes me sweaty wondering about when BU Painting will send letters

Just curious - has anyone applied to and heard back from Boston University? Anything about interviews, acceptance offers, or rejections?

They're tied for my first choice and the more rejections I get back from programs the more "freak-out" I get lol

still silence from them on my end, too. the "freak-out" is getting real haha

Thank you for the reference. I do have the director’s contact information, and I have actually interviewed with her before in 2018. I did not have the same issues in 2018. My question was mainly if I should mention to the admin (the one who emailed me the zoom link for the interview) to pass along my thanks to the director. Or if I should just say thank you and leave out that extra verbiage. Based on the responses I got, I think I will keep it short and sweet.

If you have any suggestions about questions I should ask for Hunter, I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your insight!

Yeah I would also be inclined to take the short and sweet path. What a weird experience you had!

I am a present MICA student and have known faculty and staff of the school to generally be very genial and down-to-earth. if you (or any other prospective MICA students reading) want to know something specific about the school or Baltimore, I'm happy to help.

  9. I just interviewed at TCU! It seemed to go well.

They asked me some really interesting questions, including:
What is a difficult problem you encountered in your studio and how did you reconcile it?
in what ways have you connected to your community in the past, and in what ways will you be in the future?

definitely good food for thought, I thought.

Indeed, the rate of failure is very very high for artists. Most folks who get a MFA never continue their art practice.

The school sees you as an investment of their resources to have you graduate from the program with a MFA degree. If you switch to working in another field not related to art then they see that as a failure. Considering the scarce nature of art related things they want to know that you will continue doing art regardless if you have to work another job or taking 1-2 jobs to make ends meet.

That's their viewpoint as I see it.

This is a hot take, care to expand on this? I'd be especially interested to see data supporting your claim that folks who get an MFA never continue their art practice. it doesn't sound totally unlikely, but it does sound sad.

“Incredibly low” hahahahaha. Rent going down 15% in NYC means that rent is where it was 4-5 years ago... that would still make it second highest in country...

oh wow I did not realize that's where it was! perspective

Yeah I’m a little nervous to take the nyaa offer just because New York! It’s a scary city financially. Best to wait it out and see what the best offer is.
I chose Tulane because of the faculty and also it is fully funded with a stipend.  I chose all the schools based on three criteria really: faculty, funding, prestige

right, that is a big part of my reluctance as well, though I understand rent is incredibly low these days since people have left the city due to covid. maybe if we're lucky it will stay that way?

Nice, I picked TCU for similar reasons; fully funded, stipend, and I am a native Texan (Houston). The faculty are pretty cool as well, just much fewer people there.

I got an interview request from goldsmiths! Had no idea there was a strike happening so that’s concerning.
I also got an interview request for Tulane though I’m not sure if anyone else is applying there. Haven’t heard many people talking about it.
NYAA scholarship offer was surprisingly good. Feeling more optimistic! Good luck everyone!

that's super interesting, I almost applied to Tulane since I have family in NOLA, and I was super impressed with Ronna S. Harris' work. what attracted you to the program?

stoked you got a good offer from NYAA!!! not surprising since I saw your work!
they gave me a decent offer as well, but I'm ballin on a budget so I gotta be extra patient over here with my FAFSA and all haha

When submitting portfolios on SlideRoom do you guys actually put descriptions of your works in the "Additional Details" section, or do you just leave it blank? (Especially for abstract works)

I generally left it blank, but there were a couple instances of noteworthy info; one of my paintings was done en plein air and I went on location 12 times, carrying out a big ass easel and 4 foot canvas. so I thought that would be cool to mention.

Ahh! I just applied to New York Academy of art? Please enlighten me! How did it go?

Also, is their deadline until February or March? I had schools mail my transcripts since they do not not receive any other way or format.

I got in their early deadline. I think the hard one is feb.

it's gone well so far! I elected to do an interview (you can simply sign up) and it was pleasant. I made a post about it ITT

Posing another question. Has anyone gotten accepted when applying, and ended up rejecting because you couldn’t afford it? I’m scared that I’m just not able to accept going financially. The 5 schools I applied to, only a couple offer decent funding. I’m nervous that I’m going to have to wait another year since I’m banking on scholarship money.

How bad does it hurt having to tell a school no due to finances?

I haven't been in that situation yet, but I expect I might be. So i'm hoping I can leverage my offers, or at least find an option that genuinely works for me. Honestly this was my situation in undergrad- I wound up appealing my scholarship offer, essentially just asking them for more money. It worked once! So I think there's hope.

therefore my answer is that I hope we don't have to find out how it feels to tell a school no due to finance :)
