Anyone reject an offer from Syracuse? Waitlisted for IR and would much appreciate it.

Hey! I did a couple of days ago. Putting in the official paperwork today, so hopefully an offer comes your way. I am IR. This was a really tough decision because Syracuse is such a great school. Good luck!

@heyheyheyheyhey CONGRATULATIONS! Re: Syracuse, did they send you a link to the portal, or was it an email from a POI? Hoping not hearing today doesn't mean rejection!

Hey! It was an email from the DGS. Super lovely. No funding info yet but said he would get back to me shortly. I hope they are rolling them out slowly. Definitely not automated. Good luck!

OMGG, I'm so happy for you. Congratulations! How was everything? Did they straightly say you was accepted or did they have a conversation with you first?

Yeah! They assumed I knew ahha! My advice is to go in with heaps of questions about the program. They are so enthusiastic about it and keen to let you know all the great opportunities. I was just reeling from being accepted. I’m not sure I was coherent!

WAIT! I have an interview at Maryland too. What do you mean it was an acceptance? Like how did the interview go?

I went in all prepared for my interview and they started talking about how enthusiastic they were about our research opportunities, so I asked if this was an interview or an acceptance and they said it was an acceptance! They apologised that the email wasn’t clearer haha! They are super nice. I’m so excited!

  5. What an absolute cracker of a day! I am ecstatic! I have been accepted into Syracuse and Maryland. I am over the moon! To all those who have interviews with Maryland - spoiler alert - you have been accepted! The DGSs are delightful! Come prepared to ask questions about the program. I cannot begin to describe the joy of being accepted in such a tough year to such amazing schools.

To those still waiting - we are still early in this process. You are all so brilliant and supportive. This is a tough year and I wish you the absolute best of luck.

Now to the stats: I am IR. 2a/1w.

I got an interview there too. I'm CP. When did you schedule yours? I'm super nervous.

Congratulations! Mine is early next week. You’ll be great! They are clearly interested in your research and what you’ve done so far. I hope they are just looking to see if we are a good fit. I’ve heard the DGSs are super nice.

If you're an international scholar, your best bet to calculate your federal taxes owed is through the IRS website. They have several publications for international scholars and students in the US.

As for your state, I would check the publications of that particular state's tax rate for non-residents (which will most likely be your status in the state for the duration of your program unless you get permanent residency or citizenship).

After subtracting those, you should have a pretty good idea of your net income. Non-residents do not pay FICA/Social Security taxes, so no need to include those (and make sure your university is not taking them out of your pay.)

For tax filing purposes, I recommend TaxAct (service recommended by the IRS) or Sprintax. Do not use Turbotax if you're an international student as they only support resident tax forms -- you will be filing incorrectly if you use them.

As for textbooks and other goods, you don't have to calculate the taxes yourself as you'll get them at checkout. If you want to know ahead of time, I would recommend just estimating the sales tax to be 10% as location can vary between 8.875% sales tax in NYC to no statewide sales tax in places like New Hampshire and Oregon. Some states also do not have personal income taxes if you earn under a certain amount of income (Texas, etc.)

I'm not familiar with rent being taxed, I know rental income is taxed but not rent payments. However, some states (like Indiana) allow you to deduct a certain amount of taxes off of the rent payments you made in a year.

Lastly, once you get your tax ID (SSN/ITIN), I would recommend you register for the IRS website to make sure your federal tax payments are processed correctly.

Disclaimer: I'm not a certified tax advisor/preparer nor is this tax advice. Always consult a professional. (just based off of my knowledge working as a VITA tax volunteer in college).

This is super useful! Thanks for sharing.

I received a funding offer. Does anyone know where I can find a blog post or information like PhD Income Taxes Explained For Dummies? As an international student, the information on the school's website seemed confusing and complicated to me. I want to approximately calculate how much income I will have

Not sure this is what you’re after but you might find something here... http://www.phdstipends.com/results
