  1. Thanks for your reply. I could suggest staying in late every other week and then she compromise the other 2 weeks every month. She has work at that hour which makes it hard to come in earlier
  2. Hello! I am in desperate need of suggestions here. I'm in a Master's program and this is my first semester. My Dept is a little weird in scheduling classes. I say weird because the grad classes are held from 4-7 pm and then 7-10 pm. The 4-7pm schedule is ok with me but the class that ends at 10 pm is crazy. And I live 1.5 hours away from campus. To add to this problem of mine : The prof put us in groups so that we could have our class readings/group work /presentations done in this same group throughout the semester. Now this class supposedly ends at 10 PM but the prof said he will almost always leave us out early like 9 pm or so. This is a HUGE relief for me. BUT, there is this other group member who wants to stay in late up to 10 pm or even beyond to finish the group work on the same day and without 'scheduling' other times. I'm freaking out, I told the group that "I prefer to leave early and come in some other day for the discussion or come in prior to the class starts to hold our discussions". Apparently, this member does not see herself coming in some other day or earlier the same day.Looks like a scheduling conflict is going to happen soon. So what can I do now? I don't know what the other members have to say about this, I'm yet to get the details.
  3. Thanks single cell.
  4. And I thought I was the only one. I woke up with a head ache this morning. Grad School + marriage is a very stressful combination and I am in one such combination..Geeez! I hope things get manageable soon. The transit/travel time is what is taking its toll on me.
  5. Ok, guys...after reading the posts here I went and ordered a couple of my books from amazon.com. after that, as i was checking for the other text books, i stumble upon something called an 'internation version'. the price is like 1/3 of what i paid on amazon. i'm thinking of getting the rest of my books from this website(i think it was ebay). so anyone used international versions? what exactly it is?
  6. Hi there! I totally understand your situation, this is a difficult thing to handle. I went through a similar thought process recently. Infact, my 'dream' school would be costing me a few courses re-work if I transfer and so I decided against it. In your case, you are already in your 'dream' school. So the first step should be talking to the financial aid,Dept etc as has already been mentioned here. But, before you do that, research your options because if your school cannot help you then you should have some options to fall back upon. If that does not work then promptly think of transferring out. Are you in a MS/MA program or PhD? also, you need to check how many of your credits would get accepted. Try to go in-state, that will save a LOT of money and will be a huge relief. Good Luck!
  7. EEMSU, you have a unique interest ktel, I have the same feeling too. Its like everyone is telling me how busy its going to be, but I'm secretly hoping that's not true fuzzylogician, that's a good idea! I think I should start marking my calendar too. strange light, yes i hope to find time for my hobbies and other social commitments. Eigen, those are wise words! I'll have to plan my schedule considering my studies as a job and then putting in all my other activities. aginath, nice tip there. i think i"ll also set aside a couple of days for my reading and/or assignments. oh and i love making baby blankets too Clio, I hope I'm not left with too much guilt as I finish my program lol. That's why I want to make sure i leave room for everything. rising_star, you seem to have well-planned day! I'm going to use my planner more I think scheduling things by the hour instead of what I do now by the day). starmaker, coincindentally i'm in the same program as you. well, I'm a full-tim MS student(12 credits) and no job or research this semester. so its just the courses. Zorah, good luck! eigen, thankfully I don't have any research/job this semester!! ktel, sigh! so this comes down to efficiency? i think you are right on!
  8. your hobbies/activiites, spouse/SO/kids and your other daily things that you have to handle(may be cooking for your dinner? etc) ? or do these things just take a back seat? For example, I'm very passionate about photography, but looks like I"ll have to pack my camera in a couple of days and get my notebooks out So my question is how do you plan your self basically?
  9. I was away from my SO when we were no even married and it was a cross-continent thing. This was about 3 years ago. Was it hard? Yes. Is it impossible to be commited to the relationship? No. So that's it. Be honest and truthful.Communicate feelings every day. I had an arrangement in which we bot hwould send the day's updates via e-mail, this made us 'connect' ; for us time zones(8-10 hours difference) was another issue to handle. But, we made it through. I used the time to spend more time with my family, friends and work. Hang in there, the time will fly by and then, hopefully, you will never have to do this again. Good Luck.
  10. I'm debating this with myself too. Currenly, I have a back pack but its heavy on me and 'no easy access' to contents. I/m thinking of buying a ligfht weight(cotton/canvas) messenger bag. So how bad/good are canvas bags for grad school?
  11. I know of rutgers university in new jersey that accepts GRE. You should short list some schools based on your location or program of choice. Then check the school's website for admission requirements. Good luck!

    New York, NY

thrilled to see a new york forum here . i just realized that i have one class that runs upto 10 PM and I live in queens ( near the 7 line). so are the grand central terminals and times square stations safe at night(11pm or so)? I'd leave from my school at 10 pm and i figure that it will take me 40 mins (or longer) to reach 42 street. eventually, i may consider moving closer to my school but for now i have to travel!!
  13. I have the books listed in my course schedule. out of the 4 courses that i am taking ,3 professors have already posted the syllabus and books. one professor is still waiting for the fall semester to start(i guess :-D )
  14. thank you all! i think i"ll check half.com, amazon and some used book stores in my city. the public library is also a good idea but not sure how long i could keep the book
  15. It does not take 5+ months, you should have got the decision in about a month or two. You should call the admissions office and find out.
  16. me too!!! I am waiting for the Fall classes to start and the clases start in the last week of August for me. Wish, days pass by soon! From where are you moving? I'm not really moving but waiting to start off(and finish off too)

    New York, NY

Look in to the Housing unit of ur school, many CUNY schools have housing referals. Also depends on where in NY your school is located and where you intend to live. Good Luck!
  18. I hope so too. well, it is 2 trains for me and I do try to read some stuff, not necessarily for school though, on the train
  19. So I'm getting mself set up for the fall classes. I took one class in the summer and I used the textbook from the library. I looked at my campus book store. is there anywhere else I can buy them from?
  20. My commute is the only concern in my grad school life! School is around 12 miles from where i live and the subway train takes me 1.5 hours to get me there(one-way).
  21. Thank you guys! I had no idea what to decide upon. My porgram is a master's level course, so I assume the coursework will be lighter than that for a PhD program I actually have the stress of completing the program earlier because of family reasons. I have 13 courses to be completed and 1 course of research ;I would prefer to finish the course work in 3 semesters.
  22. I'm in a computer Science related program and am planning on take 3 grad classes along with one under-grad class(required for a pre-requisite requirement). so are 4 classes considered hectic? I don't work and I am not doing any research/TA etc right now
  23. wow, that is a great post! i must say, it gave me a burst of positive energy , i was not really stressed over this but i was wondering about the truth/honesty in our marriage. thankfully, it is a year! after that, i"ll search for jobs in his area or he could come back home. oh and neither of us is into a PhD program, i am pursuing an M.S and the husband would(if he decides to start) be going through a master's program. neither of us plan academic careers as of now.
  24. This is such an important topic in this day and age where both the man and the wife/gf arejuggling his/her own grad program with personal life. I personally would NEVER NEVER want to leave my spouse behind and go away. Same way, I hope he will never leave me behind too. Just recently. my husband told me he is interested in applying to a program outside our country. well, I did not discourage him, because I know he really wanted it. May be at this point, the program is more important to him that the marriage . That's how it is. Thankfully, it is a one-year program and I don't need to be away for years.
  25. ktel and phdaspiration - thank you I'm little nervous about doing the research and the thesis because this is my first time but I guess there's a first time for everything
