I just found out that I got the NSERC CGS-D!!! SF 196 (Psychology). I also initially had issues loading the extranet site. I received the email from NSERC about 40 mins ago.

Congrats to all those who got an award and wishing luck to all those applying for another round next year. I wish I could share feedback or rankings to give an idea about how competitive it was, but sadly I received no such details in my letter.

Finally can stop anxiously awaiting the results and get back to working on my thesis . . . . .  . . .  . .

Oh shit I got a PGS D! Anyone facing their first rejection, there is still hope for you, I finished 148 out of 165 in my committee (194) last year. I'll share some of the changes I made probably in a day or two (I owe it to the people in this forum who did the same thing last year), but I can quickly say that the comments from PNW_ on page 14 of last year's thread reeeeaaaaalllly helped me out :

I thought to provide a concise summary of my resume for those who may be considering applying for the Vanier scholarship in the future: (I know it is different year by year, but when I was researching about this scholarship, I would have liked to see the resumes of those who won Vanier (or went to the Ottawa stage). I think it gives a general view.)
Last year, my application (Sub-group SSHRC ) was not forwarded to Ottawa by my university. However, this year it was, and I ultimately ranked 103 out of 200 applicants!

Here are the key highlights from my CV: (that I remember now)

Take it. There is zero guilt in accepting the accolades and awards that you earned. You do not need to feel guilty or that your are defining your happiness or value by money - you are not. You earned this award. You may not feel proud/relieved/happy right now because things are heavy elsewhere...that is OK too. You don't have to feel anything at all. But do not decline it out of morality/guilt/shame - that is the heavy part talking right now. You can take it and feel numb right now even, that is fine - you earned this and you deserve it - it was determined by a committee that you deserve it, so do not tell yourself that you do not.

I got it, surprisingly ranked super high in the top 5 🤔
So far, I've experienced quite awful events in my life and currently going through a very tough depression and PTSD.
Now I should feel rewarded and motivated to work, but I'm not (yet?).
Congrats to everyone who got it. And also congrats to everyone without Vanier for making it this far - you will become amazing scholars and professionals even without this scholarship. Money or prestige is not something that makes you happy or your life worth living. I guess I should refuse the offer saying that.

Academic Excellence: 7.79 (Multiple degrees. All grades above 90% on transcripts) Research Potential: 5.09 (10+ conferences, 2 awards, 2 exhibitions, 2 pending papers) Leadership: 4.99 The leadership one, idk what happened since I've been the chair or member on 10+ committees, senate, a volunteer for well over a decade, work experience as team leader, started community initiatives, created conferences, won previous leadership awards, board member on organisations, and overcame a lot of personal stuff too, etc. I don't know what they are looking for.
Academic thought i would get a 7 or 7.5, but got almost an 8 so that's great.
Research I thought I would get around low 6 got 5.
For leadership, thought I'd get a high 6, got 5.

Maybe they want to show strong ties to the university community? Or it could be that they don't want to have the same person try twice? Like if they don't get it the first year, then they would have to send them the second year. Might as well send in the second year when the application is going to be stronger. It makes sense, I guess. Also, the countdown begins... 26 more hours.

@Mmsa I'm not sure why it didn't forward! The university did not assign me a rank and only provided a very generic explanation! But later I discovered (based on my own review of previous winners) that in recent years they only forwarded students in their second year of PhD, not their first!
Except for the grades I received in my first year and two or three conferences, I couldn't add much to my application this year, but it was forwarded! (Perhaps because I was already in my second year??!!) - I am not sure!
And last year, two weeks before the final deadline, our university announced the internal results, and I was not among the chosen. Those chosen had two weeks to finalize their applications and submit them to Ottawa. Like this year!

Some quick info for those eagerly waiting, but mostly for students next year. These estimates are rounded and rough, and also a bit old (like 5 years old). Things may have changed.
There are usually around 1100 applicants in total. A little under 50% of applications get nominated (500 nominees). Around 15% of applicants get funded (max 166).
The categories you are evaluated on are:
Academic Excellence Research Potential Leadership (potential and demonstrated ability) CIHR, SSHRC and NSERC are evaluated separately. You are competing against around 150 nominees (most times more, max 200) in your stream, and they are looking for 55 (sometimes 56) to fund. Your rank received will be out of that, e.g. 32/178.
In the pre-scoring, each category of your package is ranked between 1 and 9 by at least two reviewers. For a nomination to be considered eligible for funding, it must have an average score of at least 3.1 in each of the three categories. The average of the three numbers is then calculated.
If you get an average score of 6.1 or higher, you are recommended for the next stage, where all the applications are ranked (at least 40 people are placed here). If you score between 3.1 and 6.1, you're in the maybe pile (at least 40 people are placed here). If you score less than 3.1, it doesn't go forward. (at least 40 people are placed here). Only 1-2 people can be given an average score between 8 and 9. They are all then ranked by score.
The first 30 people (this is typically around a score of 7.5 or higher for SSHRC, idk for the others), are not discussed by the committee any further. They are automatically selected to be funded. 🎉
Nominees ranked between 31-70 (the next 40 ranked from the yes pile, and the maybe pile) are discussed. The score, rank and whether it gets selected may change in this stage. If there is a tie, they take the person who had the lowest difference in scores from the reviewers. If there is still a tie, they look at the leadership score and pick the higher one. From this, 25 (sometimes 26) are selected for funding.  🎉
Nominees ranked below 70, do not go any further, but you did well! (around 100 people) 🎉
Only 55 (sometimes 56) people are selected. The cut-off is a score around a 7 for SSHRC. This is not fact-based, but anecdotally on past results I've seen. Only a handful of people can get a score between 8 and 9, and the remaining 52 or so are split, about half getting in automatically, with a score between 7.5 and 8, and the rest based on the committee discussion, with a score between 7 and 7.5. (These are my estimates from past scores.)
Those ranked from 56 to 70 may be waitlisted., Around 3 people out of the total 166 winners (55+55+55+1) may decline. So you have a good chance if 56th or 57th.
If you got nominated, congrats on making it this far! You were in the top 200 of CIHR, SSHRC or NSERC applicants.  Hopefully we get good results! 🎉
