  1. @jesusrules I did my undergraduate at Columbia's film program, and ended up taking quite a few of the graduate programs. PM me with any specific questions, but Columbia in general has more professors that tend to study more historical/internation film than theory, with the exception of Nico Baumbach, who is the MA Thesis adviser for everyone.
  2. Columbia's MA decisions went out by Postal Service yesterday, for all waiting on that.
  3. @MrBrooklyn Possibly, and I'd like to think that, but you would think they'd be nice enough to inform me of that.
  4. Anyone else NOT hear from Madison yet? I applied to the MA program (though as someone wrote before it doesn't really work that way), and the website still says pending, though I know they've admitted people already. Just trying to figure out what is going on.
  5. How did you hear about Madison? My status on the website is still pending. Not hopeful (and okay with that) but curious. Anyone know what's up with Iowa? They are taking forever according to past year history.
  6. This is going to be an obvious answer I feel, but I've worked the last year in a law firm in commercial real estate while living pretty prudently. So I assume that for my Master's that it is always better to shell out the savings I have than even consider taking out a loan. Yes?
  7. HI guys, Congrats to all the UT admits for MA. I'll be at the visitors weekend (I'm trying to plan a trip to Emory earlier in that week, and hopefully will hear back from Madison and Iowa soon enough that I can plan that as well). I also heard from Pittsburgh's English MA, through an informal email from the assistant grad advisor. Don't know if anyone else applied to that but thought I'd put the word out there.
  8. Hi Brandib, Congratulations on your acceptance! Just to ask one question if I may, did you apply to the PhD and get into the Master's, or directly to the Master's program? It just seems odd that Texas would do both their programs at once, as opposed to doing PhD first and then Master's. I'm basically trying to convince myself I won't get a rejection letter tomorrow. UT was my #1 choice—the program fit me perfectly and had good comments back from both my POIs. Alas, now I am going crazy.
  9. Saw someone posted a Masters acceptance to UT as well. Can anyone confirm this? Seems strange given the history that usually Masters decisions are usually made 2-3 weeks after PhD. Perhaps someone made an error?
  10. Also got my letter for the USC MA Program and got thrown on the Waitlist. Bit of a dissapointment, though I already got into Emory with full scholarship so I'm not hugely upset. Does anyone know anything about the wait list? If I sign up for it, am I committed to going if I get in? What does this mean for financial aid? Could I find out about aid before I decide? Bueller? Sorry for the overload of questions!
  11. Hi All, Applying for MA from BA and obviously I don't really have any legitimate publications to speak of. I do however have two book reviews in a reputable journal. So when the application asks, "Please list any publications you have authored or co-authored, and any academic honors, awards or scholarships you have received," should I list my book reviews or simply leave that on my CV? Also follow-up: What about a conference presentation? Thanks!
  12. I'm actually going to vehemntly disagree with the poster above and say to not apply to PhD programs. This is what I did last year, and it was a terrible idea. I hadn't finished my undergrad at the time, so I couldn't submit my thesis, had no legitimate undergrad research or published papers, and I was putting myself up against a ton of highly qualified MA students. Thus, I got completley shut out. Unless you are a superstar BA with a ton of credentials, it's really dificult to go straight to a PhD program. But just looking at my status in the last year since graduating I've increased my profile by having a finished thesis, a conference presentation, two upcoming book reviews in a journal, and simply having a better idea of what I want to do in terms of research. This year I'm applying to only MA programs,. though ones that I could continue on toward a PhD at that school. I've talked with some professors and current students and most of them like to pull from inside (NYU is an exception I hear though--they prefer bringing in non-NYU students to their MA programs). The MA, depending on the program, can get you good research, conferences, hopefully an MA thesis as well that will make you look good when you apply to PhD programs either at a different school or just enough to impress the faculty to pull you up to their PhD program. Obviously though the funding is the big question mark, but again, when you consider that with some of those top PhD programs it's often at least 150 students competitng for 4-5 spots these days, mainly because they are funded. With MA programs, if you are at the top of your game on your BA, you can look very good and perhaps if you are the top you can get at least partial funding or something (ex. NYU does credit reimbursement for one or two clases).
  13. Hi Guys, After reading a number of these threads I'm kind of freaking out, though maybe I'm not so bad. Though I'd post my stuff here and see if anyone has any advice: My list of schools: USC (Critical Studies PhD), UCLA (MA in Cinema/Media Studies), UCSB (MA/PhD Film/Media Studies), Northwestern (Screen Cultures Phd), Brown (Modern Culture and Media PhD), Michigan (Screen Arts and Cultures Phd), and Madison (UComm-Film Phd) My stats: Earning BA in spring at Top 5 University 3.7 GPA, though about 3.9 in Film Studies major, which is a highly academic-writing intensive program and has only included one production class GRE: 630V/780M/5.5W (630 puts me at the 91st percentile, which i hope is enough) 3 Great Professors writing recommendations, two of them well known in the field No Research but a decent amount of internships/positions—film editor at paper, accredited film critic for New York Film Festival, interned for IFC Films, wrote a musical for 3000 people Am I shooting myself in the foot by applying for PhD? Do I need more safety schools? Did I miss opportunities to do undergrad research? (I was wait listed for UCLA's SROP Humanities program last summer, though I guess those programs aren't designed for privileged white males) Any advice or thoughts would be more than appreciated!!
