I had just woken up and reached beside by bed to open the computer. The letter was strangely formatted, first saying that a hard copy was in the mail, so it took me a little while to find the congratulations part. It was the middle of the day during the week and everyone I know was at work, so first I did the "nobody is watching me happy dance" then scooped up my cat and swung her around the room. The cat kept licking my face like she knew I was excited.

Many schools have off campus coordinators who know all the best places to live, can put you in contact with tons of people and are a great resource. That said, I've found the best roommates I've ever had on Craigslist. They are not all horror stories.

It's not so much that they treat you as if you will have parents that will pay, particularly since you don't even have to provide any information on your parent's income, assets, etc. But, it is based on tax returns. If they didn't base it on something they can verify, they would have no way to prevent abuse of the system.

I love my mac. I don't think I'll ever go back to a PC for my individual needs. They have good tech people to help when problems arise (which for me has RARELY happened), it is compatible with all of my media and the operating system is clean and very easy to use. They're a touch more expensive than PCs, but I think it's worth the extra money.

communications13 got a reaction from forumuser in thank you card... help?
Send the card to the person with whom you worked out all the details of your trip and had the most contact with, if you'd also like to send one to professors who you have particular interest or who took extra time out of their day to meet with you you can do that also. Also if you stayed with or had a "buddy" who is a current student it's nice to send them a note as well.

In the actual card I'd suggest be appreciative, short and sweet and vauge about your decisions until you're ready to make your final decision. A thank you card isn't the place for that. Include several things that impressed you about the program and thank them for inviting you to their wonderful city and campus. No need to go on for more than a few sentences, the card is the sentiment in itself.

    Hope this helps.

communications13 got a reaction from Ennue in Individual Question Value
The CURRENT (the test chances Aug 1st!) test on a computer is adaptive. That means it adjusts the level of difficulty as you continue the test and considers difficulty of the questions in the score. This means that if two people get the same number of questions right, their score will be different because the computer adapts to their skill levels. So working for a while on a harder question might be to your advantage because it can be worth more points, but it is probably best to not worry about it. There is no meter telling you what level difficulty the question is. Focus your energy on doing your best on each question, not the difficulty of the questions.

Also, unlike the SAT, the GRE does not penalize for wrong anwsers so guessing is to your advantage. If you can rule anything out, then take a guess.

The ets website specifies that you can take it once per calender month, which implies for example anytime in Jan and anytime in Feb, however, you can only take it 5 times in a 12-month period.

Based on my experience and the people I have spoken to, MLIS programs are not as competitive as other programs out there. As long as you have decent grades/letters of rec/SOP, then you should be able to get into one of the programs that you applied to.

If you feel the need to apply to more programs then keep in mind that the degree is a professional degree, and the consensus among librarians in the field is that it doesn't matter if the degree comes from an elite school or not, so long as that school is accredited by the ALA. Work experience in a library is always more important than where you went to school. The only time that prestige might be an issue is if you think you might want to go into a PhD program later on, or if you want to work in a prestigious college or museum.

I have solicited advice from librarians employed in many different types of libraries and the advice they have given has all been pretty much the same: Go somewhere you can afford because librarian work is low paying and jobs are competitive. You don't want to go into debt because you might have a difficult time paying it off.

communications13 reacted to Vacuum in SoP.....is this a bad idea???
Write whatever makes you feel that your SOP will be it's best. I don't think anyone can say 'dont write that' (even though they do on the boards). I would just say to keep it short and sweet. Don't ramble on an on with every detail about you getting the textbook blah blah blah. In my SOP I wrote about a family situation that changed my outlook (and major) and I kept it to about 3 sentences. It was enough to state 'this is the event that happened and this is what happened in my life because of it'. Remember, this isn't really a highschool english essay but more like a university level paper. If you think about it that way, you might be able to have a better idea of what you should or should not include. They want to know more about your specific interests in your area of study, what you plan to do in the specialty, what research you want to get into, etc.. If you keep the history part of your story to a brief intro type para and really get into the good stuff quickly after, I think that would be fine.

Some schools want the majority of the paper to be about your future plans, while others want a more journey type of SOP of how you got to where you are now with your current interests and a bit about where you see yourself in the future. If your school doesn't really specify what should be stated, like I said earlier, just go with whatever makes you happy. Nobody can pinpoint what part of an SOP might turn people off. I don't think having a super brief paragraph would harm your letter in any way.

    Key words: super brief

Hope that helps you out a bit!

communications13 reacted to rising_star in Anxiety level through the roof
I used to think that way. Then, I realized that being less stressed in general would include being less stressed about money. But, no one here can fore you to get help if you don't want to. If you'd rather just go through dealing with things the way you have been, then let money be the reason you don't try to get help.

Have you seen every possible person at your campus health center? I know ours has something like 15 therapists, so it would definitely take a while to go through initial meetings with all of them.

At this point, you just seem obstinate and unwilling to make any sort of major change that might help things. That's fine. I think it's a stage pretty much everyone that needs to talk to someone goes through. But, at some point you have to decide to do what is best for you right now, rather than worrying about how it might make your finances more difficult later. You can pay back any debt you may have to acquire. But, the stress, anxiety, etc. That will shave months, if not years, off your life.

For some reason I was expecting a letter. That's how I understood that I would be notified. I don't like the mail, it's always junk, but for the last 3 weeks I was checking it religiously, even on Sundays . It got to a point that I would check the mail anyway but not really expect to see anything. And I started to prep myself mentally for not getting in.

So I am in a master's program now (I am applying into PhD). I have a group project in one of my classes and went to check my school email this morning which I haven't checked in a week. I open the email and the top email in my inbox is subject line 'Good News from I/O Phd Program!' Totally took me off-guard. I yelled to my wife 'I got in!' and read the email aloud to her word for word (but really wasn't processing anything other than I got in) and then called my mom. I really wanted to have a beer or some champagne but it was noon on a Sunday. So now it's later and I'm having my beer now instead

I don't think there's anything wrong with being upfront about it. In fact, if they are serious about recruiting you, they probably EXPECT that you have other offers to entertain. Good luck with your trips and your decisions! And congratulations on your success so far.
