There is no such thing as non-denominational. Everyone is located somewhere. Denying your location within a particular tradition just exhibits either a) ignorance or arrogance.

Non-denominational is some variation of the free church tradition, of which, of course, there are many flavors. Most of them are pretty bland.

My acceptance letter from IU-Bloomington said "Space may be limited, so please reply as soon as possible!"

What. The. Hell. does that mean? It's not like i'm booking a cruise, IU. You'll hold my place til April 15th and you will damn well enjoy it!

Just because someone's GPA or GRE is lower than yours doesn't make them less qualified for a PhD program. It is that type of attitude that you have to change to get accepted to a program. Relying on scores and grades alone is not going to get you far. Just my two cents.

I'm not really sure how I could possibly make myself a better applicant, yet I'm still rejected while I find out that those who got in were far less qualified than me.

I mean, 3.96 gpa (4.0 major), summa cum laude, graduation with research distinction, GRE 670, 670, 5,
Research assistant for 2 different professors, 2 professional publications, full research funding awarded as undergrad,
undergraduate honors thesis, and excellent recommendations.

Anyone have any ideas about what I can do when I apply next year (Michigan, Virginia Anthropology) or why I wasn't selected over people far less qualified (worse grades/scores, no research experience or publications?)

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Wow, I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one feeling like the whole English academic community is collectively shitting on me right now. This is my second round of applications, and this year I was 100% certain that I would get into a program. I'm not kidding--after the first round of rejections in 2008, I spent the last two years busting my ass to get a master's with a high grad GPA, write two books, publish short stories, enter/win competitions, get teaching experience, and on and on and on. And BAM--three rejections out of five apps so far. And now I'm at the end of my rope--if I can't get in with all of that, then it's just ME they don't want (it's impossible not to take it personally).

The worst part is that I know another guy from my undergrad school who's applying to the same program I am, and I swear to God, if he gets in and I don't, I'm gonna cut someone.

So I'm kind of wondering--who IS getting into these programs and what's so great about those guys?? Why not ME?!

Baz Luhrmann is the man. I love his work in Moulin Rouge. Which also helps put things in perspective. To my mind Bread Loaf has been unfairly panned. While it does have a reputation as a "party school" - the undergraduate population is constantly baked - the ranking of its graduate program continues to rise. Academic traditionalists are sure to like its fine marble architecture and (frankly) whitebread demographics, while radicals may appreciate the role various other cultures have played in helping it grow. Don't worry about your funding kneads - its upper-crust benefactors have ensured there's plenty of research dough.

It's kind of like when you're waiting for a package and you check the status over and over again. It doesn't make the package move any faster.

Watched pot never boils situation, you know. Then again, I'm so bad at cooking I burn water.
