The security dogs at one airport I went to were really cute beagles.Hard to find them intimidating. They just got on the luggage carousel and started walking around. So cute!

  2. I didn't know if grad school was for me so I did museum and field work. Websites like My link and UMD ecolog are great for finding short term field jobs. Sorry that first link looks weird but it is the Texas A and M wesbite. They update a lot...like every single day so check back often!! I cannot tell you how valuable theses jobs have been for me! Plus you meet awesome people and get to live in the coolest places!

  4. I applied to 5 schools...some were slightly reaches but all in all they were not unreasonable...Now as March is trucking along and I have no acceptances yet I don't know what to think! I know it is not over yet but I feel like my freak out is right around the corner...Doesn't help that my mother's 'clairvoyant' friend says I'll get in. Oh gee, thanks. Are you sure Jupiter is in alignment with Telesto and not Calypso? AAHHHHHHH I"LL BE LIVING IN A BOX ON THE STREET

  7. I agree...that does sounds pretty high. I mean, just looking around here student stipends are usually $10,000-30,000. EPA and NSF fellowship are themselves only $30,000 and that is considered pretty good for a grad student stipend...
  8. I thought it was real too until the clothes ripping bit! Wow, I was really horrified!

  13. That is a real shame this is not a new problem but one that has been brought to her attention before! Can she not see there is a pattern? People are not responding positively to her teaching style? She must have one of the world's largest blinders! Also, is this aspect of her personality completely a surprise to you? You got to know her when she was not an instructor, was she like this? Something about being in the 'teaching' position makes her like this. Her behavior sounds like she may be over-dominating students to keep/establish the upper hand? Maybe she feels like, for some reason, she needs to assert herself...Anyways, this is just me rambling, don't pay too much attention to it Anyways, it sounds like you were able to deal with her for a while before it got to be too much. Have you talked to the department head or ombudsman about this? I know someone who had to switch advisors because their relationship was going in a downward spiral, luckily the department was behind it and she switched and graduated - no problems. I haven't been there myself though (knock on wood) but it sounds awful. I feel really bad you both left on bad terms...Good luck on the next step!
  14. Eeekkk. I have so much on my credit card right now and I have yet to go to my interview...arrrgh
  15. HAHAHAHAHA That is a great email. I would say shoot out a brief email to maybe your top five? I think sometimes you can see on their individual webpages what the funding situation is (current grants they received, amount, timespan, etc) also see how their lab looks. Look at their grad students to see what they are working on...again stalking their webpages gives you a good idea who they are too (that is if they update it regularly!). Say that you are accepted and have broad interests in yada yada yada, at the end ask if they are accepting any new students? Don't ask directly for an RAship I think it is implied in the email since you are not attached to anyone yet... Hope this helps or gives you ideas! Good luck and congratulations!
  16. I got one rejection so far (waiting on 4!) and my reaction was very nonchalant...granted it was the school I was least excited about, the research fit was not completely there. Read it, OK, then went and ate something fattening and zoned out with DVDs of Friends...not dramatic at all. My acceptance however...that has yet to be experienced!
  17. That doesn't sound bad. I'd say around mid-March emailing about their research, maybe throw in a question about the program in general and at the end ask whether they have heard back about the funding situation. Good luck!
