    Interviews

Thanks for the insight becca!!!!!!!!!!! I know I'm going to be a barrel full of "ums" for sure. I also have been out of school for almost two years so I need a good refresher on the basics of everything of musicology and theory. I am hoping that academic interviews excuse awkwardness better than job interviews. Geniuses are awkward, right?? Geniuses say "um" all the time because what they're thinking is too complex to be expressed by verbal language.
  2. congrats!!!!!
  3. Hah, every time I get an email and it's just from a friend or family member, I'm just like "oh well." Every time I get an email and it's just from something like Facebook telling me what birthdays are this week, I'm just like "UGH, WHY?" Every time I get an email and it's just bacon from some retailer that I've already unsubscribed from I'm just like [REDACTED].
  4. So who's gonna claim the recent acceptances?
  5. I just want to be the next Professor Layton!

last night I wrote my name followed by ,Ph.D. it was both exciting (thinking I'll get in somewhere) and daunting (thinking no one's going to accept me/who am I kidding?)

a British archeologist with a Jewish first name from a Japanese video game? that's not too ambitious.

nope, the NEXT Professor Layton will be an American musicologist with a Latin first name and a username from a Japanese video gaming company. Who has a knack for puzzles.

Congrats! Aaaah I wish I could help you but I basically have all the same questions as you about interviews (by the way do you know if UCLA musicology is interviewing too?) My only tips would be super basic: think of everything they could possibly ask you about your work and rehearse your answers. Research the department like crazy. Prepare a ton of thoughtful questions. View it not so much as a big test where you'll be judged but as you assessing the school and the department. Good luck!
  8. I emailed the graduate field assistant whose contact info I got from the music dept's website. In other news, this chocolate is flavored burnt marshmallow (or maybe s'more but I'm not getting the graham) and it is delicious.
  9. Hi! I just emailed to check on this, actually. Judging by other boards here I think it's a common thing. And because I'm desperate for more musical camaraderie I hope you give us an introduction!!
  10. I think I once did something in Max MSP. Like, connected one object to another something. Then I gave up and went back to my piano. (Then, after flagrantly disrespecting Mozart and Debussy, I went back to reading books) Nope, not applying to media labs this round. Last year I was accepted to NYU Steinhardt's Music Technology program but couldn't afford it.
  11. Wasn't me, although I applied to the musicology department. Not yet, anyway. Oh gosh, now I'll be grateful for an empty inbox.
  12. HAHA yeah that "folklore" listing always made me laugh in confusion. YEAH WE'RE HOT! WHOO! Finally. Think we can catch up to the Lit/Ret/Comp folks??
  13. Welcome eum-ag! Nice to have an ethno person here this round. I have a slice of ethno in my interests and I was also attracted to UCLA's program (even their straight-up musicology program emphasizes the social/human aspect of music-making). UCLA is a hard admit because it is hard to get into! And the recent NRC rankings put it at #1 so the competition is intense, I'm sure. Good luck as we approach February!!
  14. silent at my end!
  15. Yes! Did you also request your scores to be sent to University of California - Los Angelos ??
  16. I think it just means that they were notified, via email, that they'll be interviewed (by phone, skype, in-person).
  17. Yep, February! However, I received two interview invitations last week, which is some of the earliest I've seen on the history of the musicology board (different from music composition) although musicology still has a small representation here. That got the ball rolling on my anxiety and lack of productivity. I just found out that one of my referees wrote someone a letter that explicitly did not recommend the applicant, and now I'm paranoid. I have been mostly worried about ad-comms reading my writing samples, my SoP, and noting my lack of publications, and I've just been totally complacent about my letters. I just assumed the worst one would agree to write is something generic (not sparkling), but still positive. I'm telling myself that this ref submitted a letter for the schools that have contacted me for interviews, so whatever is written can't be terrible, right? Right?? Why, in the 3 minutes that it took to write this post, did I not get any new emails?? So I'll continue this post - I had a dream last night that I got a letter by mail and an identical email from Cornell! Yay, but postal mail is usually bad. I opened it up and saw "Congratulations" but blinked and it was gone! Then I read that "Your application results have been delayed for 2-3 weeks because.........." nothing. Still no new email! Maybe I should...work....

  20. I've never interviewed before! I'm currently stalking other humanities forums on here to find tips. I'm not composition so I'm assuming our interviews will be different in a lot of ways, but I'm going to prepare like a job interview -- know how to present myself and my scholarly interests intelligently and concisely (I tend to ramble), read and reread faculty work, and bring a ton of questions. Good luck Becca and let us know how it goes! (I'm really curious because I've never done skype except with my friend, once)
  21. Where is my weekly Duke status email? I need my regular dose of "AAAAAH!!! nope."

  25. @becca - I think video, right? I'm not speaking from experience though. Northwestern interviews are out! I'm especially over the moon because the university pays for travel, hotel, and food even for us lowly humanities kids!
