  1. Dear Ms. nandelle, Yes, you should have done that music degree. Sincerely, Graduate School
  2. As I'm kind of far away from mine, I plan to write them a nice letter thanking them for their letters, lettting them know where I was accepted and where I will be attending (once I know!), and enclosing probably a starbucks gift card and some chocolate (suitable thanks from a Seattle girl and all my recommenders are coffee drinkers). I wish I could do more, particularly for some of them! If I get a chance to go back to Montreal before the fall, I'll definitely try and take the professor that I worked wtih in undergrad, who was so helpful in grad applications/the only prof that got all my letters in on time, out to lunch or something similar.
  3. A new line just appeared in the web application for the last school I was waiting on... Decision: Admit. However, no word about funding. so now the wait begins...my decision is hinging on whether this school offers me $$$ Or the Pr(school offers funding).
  4. decision: admit but what about the funding? waiting continues
  5. I think funding for master's students depends on the program and the year. This year, there's not a lot of funding for anyone, and master's students get shafted. Other years, though, I"ve known of people getting TAships witih tuition remission and a stipend for master's. Congratulations on everyone who's gotten acceptances! that's very exciting.
  6. At the very least, it doesn't sound like rejection! that's a positive.
  7. Two unfunded acceptances so far... *edit - make that three acceptances~!!!* still I'll take it
  8. I know, it's ridiculous. What does status "Circulating" mean? it doesn't sound very positive Congratulations on the McGill acceptance, though And everyone knows McGill pwns UBC.
  9. (out of sheer curiosity, what type of statistics are you looking at going into?) Let us know what you decide!!
  10. I've been so superstitious about this process too...Friday the 13th doesn't bother me, but both of my rejections came on a Tuesday, while both admits came on a thursday...so I'm hoping for news tomorrow and no news on St. patty's day. St Joseph of Cupertino, pray for us
  11. This thread is amazing. It makes me anxious to receive my paper rejection letter from UBC (assuming they actually send one, at this point I doubt it) just in the hope that it contains hilarity.
  12. 0. nandelle 1. 1 year 2. 5 schools 3. 2 rejections 4. not a strong enough pure math foundation (my statistics degree is in business), a demonstrated lack of computer programming skills 5.yes and no. If I don't get into Oregon with funding, i'll face a tough decision between Minnesota w/o funding, or applying to Auckland. 6. I may take Analysis and another computer programming course over the summer/in the fall 7. keep working, save up money...as if I don't get a funded admit, the less I have to take out in loans, the better.
  13. Don't know how much I could help with constructive criticism, but you totally have my support Do you have any schools left to hear back from? Could you contact the schools that rejected you and ask what you could do to make yourself a better applicant next year?
  14. Thanks guys, I appreciate the support. No, I'm not Canadian...but I did my undergrad in Canada. The schools were chosen for a variety of reasons...UBC, Minnesota, and Irvine were all recommended by professors of mine. Washington is a top program, so I knew that I didn't stand much of a chance there, but since it's 45 minutes down the road from me, I thought what the hell. Oregon state is a good stats program close to home, which was important for me :-) Liszt, that's an interesting idea. I don't know how appropriate it would be/if Oregon has already made offers (I e-mailed the grad secretary who has been helping me with the application process, and she said decisions would be sent it "in the first two weeks of march") and I just haven't received mine yet...but it's true - if they made me a funded offer, I would accept immediately. I hope all of you get in to all the schools you have left to hear from!
  15. So this morning I sent an e-mail to first choice school UBC asking when I could expect a decision on my application. I`ve had a stressful work week (2nd grader said she was going to the bathroom, actually ran away from the building, and I had to give a police statement, and her parents were freaking out, etc etc), and I have a bad cold. I get home, no e-mail response, but I logged into the website to see the two word `not admitted` Now really, would it have *killed* them to answer my e-mail or give me a human response letting me know I wasn`t it? Even Washington had the decency to send me an e-mail. Now I have two unfunded acceptances, and 1 more school left... I really don't want to have to take out crazy loans to pay for my master's degree...so I could use a hug and some reassurance that oregon (my "safety school") will come through for me...
  16. Haha, UBC didn't even send me an e-mail (or return any of mine, for that matter)...i just randomly logged into the application to see two words: "not admitted". And that's that.
  17. I had a dream about this forum last night! I dreamed that I checked my status at one of the schools and it had switched to "Decision Made" but with no other information, so I posted on here to ask what you guys thought and the consensus was that I was probably rejected, b/c if it had been an admit, I would have received an e-mail/phone call or something. I am just ready for this to be over...and trying not to remember that for my undergrad, it was beginning of May before I heard back from McGill...
  18. Best case: it means "We can't *officially* tell you you're in, but if I were you, I'd start apartment hunting around here" Worst case: it's a generic e-mail sent to everyone who hasn't been rejected yet. The good news? I really, really doubt they would send an e-mail like that to someone who had a rejection on the way in the mail. Good luck!
  19. I've recently been practicing more...i play harp and have a stack of pieces I've been trying to learn but not actually working on...so i've decided that this week instead of obsessively checking my e-mail i'm going to learn at least the 1st part of the Dussek Sonata So far it's 1 pg at half tempo...
  20. I heard from UC Irvine for Master's, and I know of someone who heard from Chicago also for a master's degree...but i think it's very probable that master's results come out before phD. *sending warm feelings your way!* and if you need a laugh... http://xkcd.com/552/
  21. I also applied for a master's in stats. Congratulations on your acceptance to Chicago! that's a fantastic department. I would say it depends where you want to go. I think sometimes people here put a little too much weight on the prestige of a program...in the business world oftentimes it's not as big a deal as in academia. So if you're looking at getting a master's degree so you can work in industry or government, I'd say Delaware. If you are interested in going on to a phD afterwards, then definitely Chicago. best of luck with your decision! noelle
  22. If I don't get funding anywhere, then I will have a tough choice - go to one of the ones I applied to this round (without funding) or wait until the fall and apply for university of Auckland. As a NZ citizen (albeit by kind of a fluke - I'm kind of 100% all-american), I get dirt cheap tuition and ridgey sent me an awesomely helpful PM detailing that if I'm willing to search for it, there is funding available. The disadvantage to going there is I would be a long, long way from friends/family, and I would not be able to visit to set things up (housing, orientation, etc) prior to attending. So we shall see...
  23. Hmmm, while that's not particularly encouraging, I'd be cautious of treating it as an out and out rejection. I know the way these things typically work is that you send your materials to the graduate school, who collects them and then forwards them to the department. The department then does its review, and then sends its recommendation back to the graduate school...who then, if you're recommended for admission, checks to make sure you meet certain minimum requirements and then issues the official admittance. The fact that it changed to graduate non-admit as soon as they notified you the file was complete and sent to the department is a little hopeful - if they (the graduate school) was rejecting you outright, why bother forwarding your application to the department? Perhaps the status means that you haven't been admitted *yet*. I'm just throwing things out there. I really don't know, though - is there someone in the someone in the graduate studies (perhaps the go-to person for the grad application) who you could ask about this? Best of luck =)
  24. The worst part is the paranoia is seeping into other parts of my life too....it's driving me up the wall. By the time this process is over, I'll be too insane to actually attend anywhere other than the local loony bin.
  25. important but not the most important thing for me... I would choose any school on my list, if they offered my money and the other schools didn't. However, if I was choosing between two schools that offered funding, I would choose the school I prefer even if its funding package was lower - as long as it wasn't hugely lower. For my program, I really don't think that there's a big enough difference between my top school (minnesota) and my lowest school (oregon state) to justify the nearly $60,000 cost differential if I get funding at Oregon and not at Minnesota. Of course, as I haven't been offered funding anywhere yet, this is purely hypothetical
