unrest/doom/insanity
lyonessrampant replied to apieceofroastbeef's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks everyone for the advice. I got the Minnesota offer Monday and have been thinking I should contact the other school I've heard back from. In addition to asking for feedback from all you lovely people, I asked one of my LOR writers, and he also said to inform as soon as possible. I think your reasoning, MedievalManiac, is spot on. I hope all of you waiting on answers get acceptances soon. I feel extremely lucky to have these two offers, even though I'm still waiting on 5 or 6 of schools I've pref-ed higher. I'll contact the other school soon, and hopefully that sends somebody good news. Thanks again for the suggestions! Capo, sorry I'm keeping the Percocet all to myself I had a pretty intrusive sinus surgery and they're the only things that let me function at all at the moment -

MM:So I have two offers and know for sure I'm not taking one. Do you think it looks. . . ungrateful? to tell that school so soon? I definitely apprexiate the offer, but I'd also like for someone else to know sooner and to let my funding go to someone else, both for the program and travel funds. To all, not just MM, any recommendatioons about how to handle this? Please excuse typos. . . From my new phone and under the influence od Percocet. -
Well with the MA posts, that should mean Ph.D people get notified soon, no? I sure hope so!!!! Good luck to all of us anxiously waiting.

Yeah, saw that and my heart beat a bit faster. . . I wonder if someone made a mistake? Email was also under the impression that Ph.D. admits were notifid first. Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed for all of us who applied there! Edited to fix typos brought on by my drug-induced, postoperative state. .

asked to verify in-state residency
lyonessrampant replied to tortola23's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'd guess that they split up residents and nonresidents since the funding packages would be different. I would also guess that they have to verify residency before any offers of admission or anything. I hope it is a good sign for you! -

Need a distraction?
lyonessrampant replied to RestorationJunkie's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Lamebook is also entertaining. . .there are some fabulous grammar and spelling entries too. . including tattoos with misspellings! As a side note, I just went and bought a Droid Fascinate today partly because I'm going to Vegas for the weekend and was concerned I'd go insane without the ability to constantly monitor my email and grad cafe results. I think distractions just won't do the trick at this point when Sin City isn't enough to make me forget this damn process! -
Yeah, I got that email as well, but it says: "Professors on the admissions committee will be making admission, denial, and wait-list decisions by the end of February 2011. If you have not heard from us by March 1, 2011, please contact me through e-mail." I'm hoping this means that a lot of the notification will happen toward the end of February (hopefully the last couple weeks) and that not hearing by March 1 would be an unusual circumstance.

Also waiting. I messaged my friend in their Eng Ph.D. program to see if she had any insider info. . .haven't heard back yet. . .

Duke English (not a result!)
lyonessrampant replied to RestorationJunkie's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Grrr! Such BS that they haven't told us yet. I just emailed the DGS. . .I'm tired of waiting. If we're rejected, JUST TELL US ALREADY! It seems like common courtesy, no? Anyway, if I hear back, I'll let you all know what she says. Congrats again to the waitlisted and accepted. -

lyonessrampant replied to RestorationJunkie's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks, Swilson. I'm still waiting and would KILL (metaphorically only of course!) to be on the waitlist. The more tantalizing close Duke is, the more I want it. . so any info would be awesome I think if they don't tell me by tomorrow afternoon, I may have to call and storm the battlements, so to speak, and demand a decision. I don't quite get why they're taking so long to notify. I mean, if I'm rejected already, JUST TELL ME! -

lyonessrampant replied to RestorationJunkie's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks Are you still waiting to hear from Duke? It looks like only Swilson (as far as I know) actually heard anything from Duke. It seems weird that it takes this long to put together a waitlist and then notify those who didn't make it, no? Good luck to you! -

Yeah, that's 5 right there (and that's not counting people not on grad cafe or who haven't replied to this thread). This makes me sad Thought that the agonizing wait would be at least made tolerable with a waitlist, but it looks like not. Wish they'd get it over with already. Congrats to Swilson on the waitlist! -

So how many people are still waiting to hear from Duke? I count at least three (me, YT, cyriac), are there more? We can't all be on a waitlist can we? I called yesterday to try to fish for more info, and the lady told me my file is complete, has been reviewed, and that I should hear from them "very soon." Going crazy waiting on this one!!!!! -

Another UC admit posted. Congrats to that person! I, on the other hand, have pretty much lost hope. Let's just hope they notify rejections more promptly than Stanford. . . -

I emailed one of my rec writers. He's on sabbatical, though, so may not know anything. However, if he shares any useful tidbits of information, I'll post them here. -

letters of rec
lyonessrampant replied to yank in the M20's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I don't think it is appropriate to ask. Some writers will just give the letters to you (a few of mine have done that), but if they don't offer, I wouldn't ask. As for not checking the box, I've heard of recommenders who won't provide letters if that is done because they don't have the privacy to really express their opinions. I think LORs (as frustrating as it can be!) remain a mysterious, inscrutable part of the app package.
