  1. Another week of waiting >=(

  2. Still not out of the waitlist yet, guess I have to wait till next week...
  3. Interesting seeing this poll after reading Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow.
  4. I have to wait 3 more days to know my fate? Noooooooooooo

  5. I'm still waiting to hear from BU and UCLA...
  6. Do you have any good reason why you might pick UW or Harvard over the others - area of interest, professors you really want to work with? Otherwise, it seems clear to take the one that gives you the money, and as others have pointed out, Berkeley is pretty much well-recognised, even if they are ranked slightly lower. P.S. Might be nice to of you to reject the other three schools early if you're sure you aren't going to accept their offers!
  7. Well put. I hope your relationships didn't turn up as casualties in the application process.
  8. You might be on some sort of waitlist.
  9. This seems reasonable. For biostats I pretty much applied to UW (rejected), Michigan (wait-listed), UCLA and BU (both still pending). You've got one advantage over me in that you're domestic rather than international. erb8884, which of the two are you choosing?
  10. Just curious, why biostats? Any particular area of interest?
  11. It's somewhat comforting to see so many fellow 25-29ers...
  12. Is your data in some sort of text file? Do you know how to use R? Or MATLAB?
  13. This was a randomly generated name that I used for a MUD a few years back and I've used it ever since.
  14. With luck, you might not even need the PhD to continue a career in writing For myself, a friend roped me in to join him in a choir. Seemed to be a magic pill as I had stopped singing in a choir for 7 years after leaving high school, and I was actually missing the feeling of being in one.
  15. It depends. There was a school where the director of graduate admissions had called me previously, so I emailed him directly. The other schools - I had previous email contact with the admins so I emailed them instead. Otherwise, the admin might be a good start if there is no other obvious point of contact.
  16. A somewhat related quora thread: http://www.quora.com/Graduate-School/Should-you-get-a-PhD-only-if-youre-very-passionate-about-your-field-of-study Personally, for my field, it seems that there's an increasing demand for phd level statisticians.
  17. Has anyone heard anything from UBC Statistics Department yet? I haven't seen any PhD offers being reported...
  18. Amongst other reasons (namely, the significant other being already there), I applied to UW biostats as they seem to have some good work using Machine Learning coming out of there. Also, the faculty at UW seems to cover quite a lot of ground which I find to be a plus. I didn't look at Yale, so I can't say much, but I'll just say how insanely jealous I am that you actually got an offer from UW biostats Congrats!
  19. I'm from a similar background to some of you, and I'm currently in a short RA stint working on machine learning. So far, it hasn't been too bad. Knowing MATLAB is useful. Going through the relevant Coursera courses will be very helpful, e.g. Andrew Ng's and Geoffery Hinton's courses.
  20. First non-rejection

  21. Yeah, it can be a good thing if you haven't gotten an email yet. The waiting is terrible though.
  22. I'm pretty much in the same boat of being rejected by my undergrad institution. I don't know about your school, but I do know that my undergrad institution hires students part-time to do these calls, so at least I would think twice before being snarky to the donations team if I do get called up.
