Statement of Purpose AND Personal History
George2248 replied to Timshel's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I just want to be sure of this, since I just finished my first draft for the PHS in Berkeley. I tried to answer what they ask for on the prompt, but this made my essay strongly focus on my social work and ethnic diversity, which I have a lot to talk about (not a single mention about my academic background). I just want to be sure that this is the right approach on this. When you say that Berkeley´s is definitely a diversity statement, then what is a diversity statement supposed to be like? Am I on the right track? Thanks for the advice... -
Well must applications deadlines are getting closer. I was wondering if there is anyone applying to Engineering Management or Construction Management Programs out there?, so we can share some comments...

Statement of Purpose AND Personal History
George2248 replied to Timshel's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Actually I think Berkeley´s PHS is more a diversity statement, more focus on social work and diversity. At least that is what it seem from the question they ask in the application. Any thoughts about it? -

What about Engineering Management? I have interest in many of the Professors subjects but I dont know if these Programs are that focus on research, especially since is not a Phd. Also I wouldnt know how to talk to them, what am I supposed to say?

The problem I have is that I usually found only samples for CV or Resumes but not combined which is what I think is asked for the applications...

What do you mean by contacting a professor before hand? Should I start emailing the professors of the faculty I am interested in applying to? If this is true, how should I do that? what would you say to them? thanks...

I tried to find a post about this but somehow I didnt finf it. I was wondering what are your suggestions and maybe where can I find some samples of CV/RESUME hybrids, that include Professional Experiences and Academic Work. I have found many Professional Resume Samples and also Academic CV, but for must of the applications I think I need a hybrid of both which includes al the information, and that I havent found and I am a little lost on how to organize it. Thanks for your help!

MA vs. PhD SoP
George2248 replied to mooochael's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
I have the same question.... Only this is for a MS in Engineer Management. I do not think a specific research interest is as important in my field, but I might be wrong... -

SoP review/exchange
George2248 replied to Otherworlder's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
I am interest in exchanging or reviewing, I just finished first draft on Engineer Management -
Engineering or Construction Management is actually what I plan to study. But for now Ive only found the MEM programs of the MEMPC and they all are 1 year programs. Ive found only a few MEng in Construction Management, must top programs only offer MS. And some offer Professional MS which I dont know what the difference is? Im still not sure what to apply....

Working Visa after a MS
George2248 replied to George2248's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
I am sorry this got posted twice, when I post it the forum was having problem and I guess I accidentally post it twice. -
Hello I am an international student with the intention of getting a MS in Engineering Management from some top Engineering schools (Berkeley, Stanford, Cornel, Duke) I was wondering what are the chances of getting a working visa (and a good job), possible in the form of a sponsorship, for students who graduate with an MS in these competitive programs. What are the steps after finishing the MS for getting a Visa and staying to work in the US? Is this hard? or very common? Thanks for the help, any real experiences help a lot...

Is a MEng really worth it? from waht I read they ussually require almost the double of credits than a MS and I dont know what benefits does it have over the MS? Any experiences?
-
Ok I have read a lot and I think I have a general idea of the differences between a MS and a MEng. Being the second one a more extensive program, usually with research and thesis included. What I havent realized waht the difference is between a MS and a Professional MS. I know this might be a stupid question but being an international student I am not very familiar with the Degrees offered in the US. Thanks for the help

I found it, forget about it

I am still confused about the Gatech Program. Why does it appear under the RESEARCH tab and it is not mention in the Graduate Programs?. I am not clear if it is a Master Science Degree, the layout of the website is a little bit confusing... Although I checked the brochure and the courses are pretty much what I am looking for.

SOP basics and must
George2248 replied to George2248's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
I also would like to know what is the number of words per paragraph do you think is common? -
Ok that is good to know. I guess I will put must of it in education since I only have 1 year of professional experience, all I have are awards or scholarships from school. One last thing, do you know where can I find some good sample of CV/Resume specially made for Graduate Applications? Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it

I also have a question about the CV/resume breed. Where I am supposed to put my academic awards like scholarships, dean list, being top of my highschool or university class; all that kind of stuff. Is this supposed to be on the SOP?, I think that might be boring and take too much space. In the Personal History Statement?, which I think should be more focus on diversity. Or in the CV/Resume? Which does not seem very professional for a Resume. I am asking this because in my country Universities and Highschools really appreciate these kinds of awards and I have some that might be helpful to mention. But I havent found a really good place to fit them in my application. Any advices?

I just started my SOP and I havent find a guide or a model to some basic points about SOP. I was wondering If we could summarize some basics here: 1. SOP recommended length (if not stated in the application) 2. Structural organization: number of paragraphs and focus on each paragraphs. 3. Common mistakes that should be avoided. 4. Information that must be included. 5. Words and cheesy lines to avoid. 6. Any other advice?
