I just finished my SOP for Berkeley's Engineer and I am pretty happy with it. The problem is that there was no suggested length or word count on the prompt. After I finished I asked the department what their "suggested" length was and they told me 3 pages double spaced. I tried to cut my essay as much as I could and I am now in 3 and a half pages double spaced (about 200 words above the "suggested" limit) I was wondering, for those who have some experience, what do you think about surpassing the suggested limit when it is not specifically stated in the prompt. Do you think this could hurt me?, because I think that loosing more info could hurt more my essay. What do you suggest, I really need some advice with this....

I am not sure whether to apply to the Eng Degree or the MS, specially in Stanford. I dont know if I could apply to an MS and latter decide whether to pursue the Eng Degree. But they specifically ask me this in the application, and I was wondering in which case I would have a better chance of admission, with the MS or the Eng Degree? Any thoughts or ideas, maybe someone who have experience in this. I tried to contact the faculty with this question but I havent gotten an answer yet.

Anyone else have any idea specifically if there is a problem on surpassing the word length suggested by the department, from 3 pages double spaced, to 4 pages double spaced?

I sent you the draft already... If you have any comments please let me know...

What about 740-800? any guesses?

With the new info, after ets translated old scores into new one... What is your hypothesis on the scores ranges? closer to the top? closer to the lower? or middle?

Any ideas about this? I havent gotten an answer from the admission department regarding this question

Some of the online applications have a section to post any link or website relevant to my application. I was thinking what should I put there? - Link to my pregraduate University (it is outside of the US so it might not be well recognized) - Link to my thesis research work (it is in spanish) - Anything else?

Someone to review my SOP?

I can do it if you want PM me -
I am in the same position. Since the online application ask you to specify of you are applying for an MS or Eng Degree. I am still not sure where to apply, do I have a better chance to get accepted if I apply to a MS. If that is the case, could I apply later to the Eng Degree once I started the MS? I would like to share also my profile to see if I am competitive, I dont know if this is the place to post it?

Thanks for the tips. I am not applying to a Phd, and I think the Engineering and Project Management program is not that research oriented so I didnt focus that much on research. The problem I still have is with the length. I have about 1400 words (which seems to long) but I cant seem to find any information that I could cut. The admission supervisor told me that they "like" 3 pages with double space (about 1000 words) but I am not sure if those extra 400 words would hurt me more than they help. I could send you my first draft if you have time, maybe an outside look could help me to reduce and cut some paragraphs.

I graduated with the best grades of a 160 students class from a very good private school in my country. I had gpa 19.75/20 which was pretty good. Would it hurt if I put it? would it look unprofessional?

I am now preparing my CV/RESUME hybrid for application to a MS. I was wondering if I should include my high school studies and awards?

I was wondering if there are any applicants or former applicants for Berkeley Engineering so we can discuss some aspects about the SOP. I am not sure about the Word Count Length, the structure and main purpose of the essay, literature form of the essay, and also I am not very clear about the Personal History or Diversity Statement. If anyone here have some experience about and maybe could help me to clear some of these topics Thanks for your time!

Hello I am now completing the online app in several programs. I would like to know how am I sure of the status of several of the application requirement. How would I know if they have received the LOR, if the GRE/TOEFL scores are successfully reported, if they received the official transcripts mailed. I am not sure if I should send my application before I know all these requirements are complete. And I am not sure how is the process to check that. Maybe I could send the application before and then wait for all the documents to arrive but I am not sure if this is the best way to proceed. Any ideas or suggestions?

This is my profile I finished my BS in Civil Engineering 4 months ago in a Top University in Caracas, Venezuela. I graduated top of a 20 students class and my GPA is 17/20 (about 3.4) I have no background or experience in the US education system. I just studied English for 6 months in LA after I graduated from Highschool. I have been working in a my family Construction Company for about a year. I did my intership there. I did a research thesis in order to obtain my BS, its subjects related to construction planning and control. I have relatively good LOR, specially the professor I did my thesis with, but since they are professors that do not speak English fluently I am a little afraid they might not be perfect. My GRE scores are: 740 - 800 MATH , 630 - 730 VERBAL I plan to apply to a MS in Construction Management, Engineering and Project Management or Engineering Management in the following Universities: 1. Berkeley (CEE Department) 2. Stanford (CEE Department) 3. Columbia (CEE Department) 4. Illinois Urbana (CEE Department) 5. Cornell (Engineering Management Dept.) 6. Duke (Engineering Management Dept.) Ok with this profile, I was wondering If I should be aiming to the top Engineering Universities as I mentioned, or should I lower my expectations? Also If anyone have any experience of International students getting in successfully in those top Programs I appreciate your feedback.... Thanks for your time and help- 1,791 replies
