Wow, working on your SoP already? Talk about ahead of the game!

Hi All, Well, it still might be early, but now that the current cycle is (mostly) over, I thought I'd give a shout out to fellow Psychology and/or Neuroscience 2015 hopefuls! I'm still compiling/narrowing down my school list, but I am preparing to apply to Cog Psych and Cog Neuro PhD programs for next fall. Who's with me?

Crimson2014; The bottom line of your post, if I understand it correctly, is that the Extension degree program (as opposed to simply taking classes) requires a number of admittance "hoops" that are comparable to other Harvard schools. From my experience, I can't comment on the "intellectual differences" or "potential" HES attendees have compared to other Harvard students since in the classes I TA for at HES, I am not informed which students are in the ALB program and which ones are just taking the class. I suppose my frustration with HES, which I did not elaborate on in my previous post, is the fact that some students simply taking HES classes in, say, business or law are boasting on their resume that they went to Harvard Business School or Harvard Law School, which are both considered highly prestigious and notoriously selective. I am not slating the Extension school program, since I am sure this is a good way for people to get into a good program they might not otherwise have access to. The only thing I find problematic is when HES students lie on their resumes, which I do think overvalues their accomplishments.

As a TA at Harvard Extension, I thought I would add my $2. On one hand, yes HES students are "Harvard students" for most intensive purposes (access to libraries, email account, what have you) however having attended "real" Harvard myself, I can say that there is a range on both sides of the fence. Some of the classes at "real" Harvard are, in fact, much harder than the classes I TA for or have experienced at HES. And the same is true for the opposite. However, the reality is that it is harder to get into "real" Harvard, since HES is an open-enrollment program. Furthermore, I would not compare HES admission to the liberal arts program to a degree program at another Harvard school because the admissions standards are simply not comparable; as an example, students at HES don't even need to prove they have appropriate competence in written English. :/ This has indeed proven problematic in my TA experiences...

Hey RunnerT! Thanks for posting, it's good to hear you've had a good time I'll start with a question... Have you cross registered at all with other Harvard schools or at MIT? If so how did you find that process? I'm totally lost with the credit conversion thing with MIT.

I was admitted to the program - was sad to decline, the professors and admin staff were exceptionally lovely and nice. I'm sure you'll have a great year! =)

Ha! I'm glad someone brought this up - I tend to wait until I've enrolled, but I am seeing more and more people update their information once they accept an offer.
-
Bumping my own thread (again, I know, sorry) to post a link to the program's facebook group, in case any rogue 2013 HDP-ers happen to stumble upon this forum in search of support https://www.facebook...90109494346284/

Oh wow, that's a great price. Yeah, I'm hoping for Cronkhite or Perkins since I'll be moving half way across the world

Returned my award letter last week - planning on applying for housing next week; anyone else applying to housing at HGSE?
-
I was accepted but decided to attend a different type of program. Also, the fact that they offer $0 funding/scholarship/grant for int'l students is ridiculous; they expect you take out $80k in loans to cover tuition costs to then become a mental health counselor? No thanks.
-
I didn't attend (unfortunately I'm 3,000 miles away), but I'm guessing 'admitted students weekends' at most schools are about selling the institution to the students. Incoming student days are probably a bit different. Just my $0.02.
-
I was accepted and declined my place the same day in the hopes that someone would benefit from it. Hope it works out!
-
I got mine through email.
-
From what I understand $12,000 is the maximum amount they give in grant. The only other sources of funding are the scholarships which require a separate application, so if you didn't fill any of those out then that's the max amount you could be awarded.
-
Pretty good actually, better than I was expecting. I'm an international student (with a co-signer, mind) so I don't get offered federal loan by the school. I hadn't applied for any of the formal scholarships but I did receive a sizable amount in grant, which is nice.
-
Haha, I do know what you mean, but let's just say mine were considerably lower than that!
-
I received my award letter tonight via email!
-
Interestingly, I don't think stats and scores have too much to do with it; granted your grades can't be abysmal but my GRE scores were awful and still got in. My best guess is the whole package counts as a whole.

Forgive me for being brass FreedomInEducation, but you seem a bit bitter by people's acceptance to HGSE based on the cost of attendance. Perhaps you should adhere a bit more to the message in your username and let people make the choices they feel are right for them.
-
So, just thought I'd let all the NYU applicants that I received an acceptance email today; no word on funding. I will be declining.

Good to know! Thanks for sharing

From what I've heard from HGSE and people on here who have asked the admissions office, award letters should be sent out (though I don't know if that means email or snail mail) at the end of next week or first week of April.
-
Yeah, I have - just thought I'd see if there were any fellow grad cafe-ers But thanks for the suggestion! Maybe I'll see you in a class or two . Have you already responded to the offer of admission?
