  1. Well, I applied to a MSW program and was on a less strict guideline on what to actually discuss. My program was more focused on your strengths, weaknesses, and things you would like to improve on as a potential candidate at the University as well as what you feel you can bring to the program that is not already seen from previous classes. I focused on my personal storytelling skills but I also incorporated very conceptually how it can translate into a competent social work professional. It won't be cliche as long as you tie it in to how these experiences have structured your interest in the field. Hope this helps. As far as what the admissions boards look like, it's only a group of three professors, the dean and the admissions team at the College of Social Work (USC) that reviews your personal statements. Usually, the three professors make a recommendation to have you in the program, the dean then reviews your statement and accomplishments listed on your application and makes the final recommendation to the admissions team and after they read and evaluate their recommendations... you are either approved, wait-listed, or denied.
  2. I am sure there was an older section dedicated to asking this question, but now after people have received their accurate scores or have taken the test recently... was it really that hard? What I mean is what were some of the strengths and weaknesses you felt you had during the test? I'm not a good standardized test taker, and I know that this is my weakness; however, as far as test content if you could choose ONE section of the verbal and math to pay the most attention to, what would it be? I am needing a 500+ on the verbal section (applying to a dual degree program in Public Health and Social Work) but a combined score of 1000 or more. Thanks in advance. I am using Gruber's 2012 New GRE book at the moment for studying and I am finding it very helpful. I do have all of the other books except the Manhattan prep books but I plan on getting those soon.
  3. Yeah, that is a little expensive for an online degree. I steered away from it for that reason alone myself.
  4. I am applying for the MSW/MPH dual track degree early next year. I am already in the MSW program, so I'd only have to apply for the MPH program. I am a not a good standardized test taker and I'd have to take the new GRE and get a score of 500 on verbal (I am sure I can do this); however, I am stressing about good study skills for the G.R.E. and what to expect. Can anyone offer any similar experiences?
  5. Thanks for the resources! Definitely more focused on Verbal than Math!
  6. I am looking into buying the verbal off of Amazon. They have a great price for them and I heard they are a little harder but more realistic than the other books.
  7. I am currently using the Cracking the GRE Book that I checked out from my school's library. I am also looking to get a dual degree in Public Health and need the GRE to apply to the program. I only need 1000 as a minimum at my university.
  8. I just was playing freerice.com and I love it too! It froze on me though but it's alright!
  9. It does pay to use terminology or phrases similar to the field you are going into. Like the strong qualities or traits that you can easily elaborate on within your paper. You can also use a small opening like a personal experience that ignited your interest in the field... they are mostly looking for how you can relate your self and your experiences to your interest in the school and the field. For my SOP, I used several traits that Social Workers find very helpful to promote self-resilience, respect and dignity in their clients which ranges from Ambition to Perseverance and their relation to my aspirations as a Social Worker.
  10. I haven't had a feeling of overwhelming yet which is possibly because I was looking foward to coming to school. I look forward to the workload and it doesn't seem to be that much surprisingly. My undergraduate college prepared me for what I am going to be doing.
  11. Like Fuzzylogician stated, the core first day consists of going over the syllabi, course expectations, course requirements, teacher's contact information and specific instructions on how to turn in papers and other assignments. Basically Undergraduate 101. After that, in one of my courses we dove right in to chapters 1 and 2. In the other remaining three courses, I had the opportunity to sit through long games of getting to know one another as well as small course exercises that clearly reflects the course that you are taking. It definitely depends but majority of the professors would like to take the time to get to know you and a lot of about you and what you offer as a student in your field. Good luck.
