If you weren't doing what you are doing, what would you be doing?
Sarahmarie replied to LLajax's topic in Waiting it Out
I think I would do some post-bacc pre-requisites and go to med school. Or run away to Costa Rica or someplace and disappear! Become a nomad... -
I think this is because those who don't fit in a school's PhD program may be considered for the masters program that corresponds to their doctoral interests and then the rest of the spots are left for masters applicants....that's just the vibe I get from the various blogs, etc. Which would really be crappy to think that we are competing against the PhD candidates as well as those applying for the same program we are...

I have nothing to report yet but I will second the notion that this would be really helpful! -
@George2248 I am applying for M.A in Mental Health Counseling and have found that it is about 50/50 with regards to interviews. About half of my prospective schools require some type of interview (phone/skype/in-person) and half don't...

So I have been invited to GWU for an interview for their Clinical Mental Health Counseling program and I am a little nervous. I am not sure what to expect. I have read a lot on this forum about doctoral interviews but not so much about master's program interviews. How are they similar? Different? Anyone have any hints or advice? Any help would be appreciated

I am 31...I used to regret not finishing college right out of high school but I had no idea what I wanted to do with myself and I think I gained a lot of important life experiences in the interim that will hopefully help in my chosen field (counseling) - at least that's what I am hoping the adcomms will think!

Going to grad school in Fall '12, need a job now though
Sarahmarie replied to peacebyinches's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I can appreciate what you are saying to a point, because it feels like after 4 years of hard work the least we can expect is a decent job, but not in this economy... I know quite a few people who have been knocked down many more rungs than you have my friend. People who used to lounge in the corner office and have higher degrees than a B.A. are now corralling carts at the local grocery. The older generation bitches about our generation's sense of entitlement and I am sad to say this post makes their argument. Just having graduated with honors and having a bachelor's degree does not automatically entitle you to a cushy job somewhere. My advice is do what you have to do to survive and get through grad school. I work as a CNA right now while I apply to grad school. I am pretty much a licensed a** wiper, but I have found some of the most profound moments of meaning and learning in what I do right now, and actually it correlates beautifully to my Human Development major and my goal of mental health counseling in the future. I guess my point is, even if it seems like a worthless job any moron could do, do it to the best of your ability and try to find some positivity in it. You may even find something in it that relates to your future career goals. You list your program as psychology...try analyzing your coworkers, the crazy customers, your bosses. You may not be able to tell them what you think but you will have some killer case studies for school later on. You might even develop some strength of character and begin to realize that those morons you worked with will be surrounding you every day for the rest of your life....it's called the REAL world. -
I agree! I don't know of anyone on my friends' list who would be annoyed or think I was gloating but even if they did...screw them! I have worked damn hard to get to this point and have overcome a lot of BS along the way. I am not gonna hide my pride or be PC on Facebook. If they aren't happy for me and supportive of my success then I don't want them to be my "friend" anyway! Posting it on FB will be one of the first things I do...mainly because that is how I keep in touch with many friends and relatives and it is a quick way to tell a lot of people who have asked me to keep them updated. Be proud and be brave! If someone begrudges your success maybe you should reconsider their true friendship.

Yes you can look at your Columbia app and see if the recommenders have received the email, if they have started the letter, and when they submitted it. When you log into the app on the left side it says recommendations. Click on that and you should see a list of your letter writers and their status.

Sarahmarie replied to Sarahmarie's topic in Psychology Forum
My understanding is mid-March for both. That's what I got from the TC online admissions chat and an email with grad admissions at NYU. -
I took it in Florida in the US
