TripWillis replied to Grunty DaGnome's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Okay, I just had my interview. It was pretty low key and easy. Mostly asked about my writing and teaching approaches and the challenges. Then asked me if I had questions. I felt like I blathered ON AND ON about the curriculum in my courses. I hope they don't think I'm self-centered. -
Still no decision posted. Annoying.

I'm tired of reading this website; I feel like I'm in comp/rhet hell right now. Wow. They want you to go to SO MANY MEETINGS AND WORKSHOPS AND STUFF. Suddenly the 2/2 load at CUNY is looking pretty awesome. -

Ah, I've kinda got my sights on Yale Am Studies. Not that I'd kick Harvard out of bed for eating crackers. -

If I get a waitlist at either Yale or Harvard, it's going to fry my brain and I won't know what the eff to do anymore. -

Weird question: did they call you or are we supposed to call them? I think they're calling us, right? -
Post-Acceptance Stress & Misc. Banter
TripWillis replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Yeah, for some reason it stings even when I've gotten rejected from places I probably wouldn't have gone to. It's funny -- I have pretty much gotten into all my top choices -- BU, Tufts, Maryland, and Davis would've been okay, but were all in the bottom half of my preferences. So strange. -
Final Decisions?
TripWillis replied to spasticlitotes's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
My final decision is to just show up at Yale and be like, "What." And they'll be like, "Huh?" And I'll go "Shiiiit, boy." And they'll go... "This kid is on point. Aiight -- $50,000 fellowship." -

When people say this, it almost makes me wish I had one more year to really perfect everything I am sending and get into, like, Yale. But, whatever. I definitely have nothing to complain about whatsoever. -

You'll definitely get it at some point. If you don't get in this year, get in touch with me later in the year if you want a peer reader for your SoP/Writing Sample. Can't promise I'll have time, but would like to help others. -
Way to go! Congrats! I applied to Am Studies, so I won't know for another day at least how that pans out. But maybe I'll see both of you (if I'm super f-ing lucky).

I saw that someone posted a Yale Af-Am/Film Studies hybrid acceptance. Congrats!! I had thought of applying for the dual concentration, but ended up going all Am Studies. So, I guess hopefully we can expect more soon?

I mean, at this point I really don't care much anymore. It's obvious to me that I'm not a good fit with Harvard, and would only go because it's f-ing Harvard. That combined with the unlikelihood of acceptance = me being very much over it. Now, if I were 0-8 at this point... God, can you imagine the tension and despair? -

Okay, so I'm starting to think that the notifications just flew under the gradcafe radar. Only one post last friday and nothing since... granted, the post could've been a hoax, but I dunno. We might just be in the dark. Then again, a lot of people on here who have been accepted into competitive programs also applied to Harvard, so I'd be surprised if not one person on this board heard anything. Hmm. -

Well, you don't HAVE to pay off the interest every month. Just if you don't it will capitalize. -
Cohort of 1, just like Harvard. Boy are these schools getting stingy!

I love how positive and supportive this board is. I agree with your points too. -

Yup, me too. My loans aren't out of control, but they're certainly not great. -

Thanks for letting us know what it's like katelynnann!! To answer your question about your waitlist, UMass is #3 choice of current acceptances/waitlists, so I'm not likely to go there. However, I want to visit the campus before I make a decision and I won't be able to do that until later March. If I get into Rutgers, Yale, or Harvard before then, then I probably will not visit. I think long story short, my space will probably free up. -
0% Confidence of Acceptance
TripWillis replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I say do it and apply for a thousand scholarships, awards, etc. ASAP. That's how I made my MA work. An unfunded MA may be unfunded in name, but I bet there are a lot of ways you could chip away at that $40,000, either through departmental prizes (and I assume there are many intended for MAs) and through the graduate school itself. Not to mention outside sources. If I could squeeze money out of a broke state school, you oughta be able to get BU to cough up something. Or, they just treat their MA students like revenue streams and statistics, gouge them, and leave them for dead. Do some research and find out I guess. -

I just want to remind any admits that if you happen to own cars, they cannot be parked on the campus lawn. This is a violation of the restrictions and you will receive a $50 ticket and they will tow your car to Medford.
