So glad to be joining this conversation. I have been jealous of all of you for the past few weeks, but as of about 5 minutes ago I am done with applications and am officially waiting it out!
I mentioned that my previous research is mostly ethnography, but I did not talk about methods past that point. I did well, not outstanding, on my quant GRE and took stats, experimental design, qualitative methods, and another math class in undergrad...hopefully they will see that I can run numbers too!
I would not round it up. They will probably not want to hear your logic for why you rounded if they have any questions about it or check it. I would just be honest upfront. I'm sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear, and I may be wrong. Good luck in your application!
I think it is just as he said, he is not an insider in the process this year, but if he is interested in you and is that positive about you the other committee members will probably also be impressed by your app. Just my 2 cents...
As barilcious said, it is tough to know what adcomms are looking for, but it seems like you have a good overall profile. If you have time to retake the GRE before your apps are due, I would try to take it again and raise your quant score.
I am not quite done yet (SOP edits, CV formatting) but I am looking forward to crocheting and scrapbooking as well as making fitness a priority. I have not been as active as I should and am pretty good at blaming that on the application process.
Hi fellow applicants! I would appreciate it if someone (or more) would be willing to look over my statement of purpose and comment. I am applying this cycle for a PhD program in SOC. It is very obvious by my interests where I want to study, so I don't feel comfortable sharing much publicly.
Anyway, let me know if you can help and I will PM it to you.
Thanks so much!
I am currently doing that now and it was an excellent choice for me. I found a job at my alma mater and have been able to meet with my former professors regularly (we were already very close) and have a lot of time to focus on my application. Since I was not busy studying for classes, I had ample time to study for the GRE and get great scores. I know it is different for everyone, but taking a year off has made me a MUCH stronger candidate.
I am interested in the Sociology of Culture and the class culture of workers in arts industries. I am only applying to one school this year (PhD), so for the sake of anonymity I will wait until results are in to clue you in on where it is. If I am not accepted this year, I will be reapplying next year and casting a much wider net.
