  2. Actually this is possible but you will have to live in the suburbs within a bus ride to the Metro. I live in PG County and I pay 1000 for a 2 bedroom (not including electric) I'm a 15 min drive away from the Red or Green Line. When I first moved to my apartment I didn't have a car so I'd take the bus to the Metro and I could get downtown in 35 mins. Getting to and from Foggy Bottom in the evenings was closer to a hour due to transfering from the Blue/Orange to the Red. It is definitely do able to find cheap housing in a safe location. In my complex in particular there are lot of professional adults and graduate students from Howard, Catholic, GWU and UMD College Park. PM me and I can send you details regarding a couple of complexes.
  3. The UPitt Accepted Applicant Day is for all departments and its primarily geared to the master's level applicants. I thinking about going but I'm not sure I want to do any more traveling so soon. Re: Hopkins Health Behavior and Society, I e-mailed the ad coord yesterday and she said that decisions for the DrPH program will be mailed out today (I assume PhD decisions will be going out at the same time).
  4. 3.5.12 401K Statement - Keep Postcard from USC Visitor Center - Keep Solicitation for Prescription Drug Plan (How do I get on these mailing lists? It is so time to move) - Discard
  5. Congrats @ rmgerdes 3.3.12 Paper copy of Mich wait list letter Pizza flyer (So tempting!)
  6. 3.2.12 Electric Bill - Keep Grocery Flyers - Recycle Runner's World (Guess I need to finish last month's issue) - Keep
  7. You should send the letter but I think it would be nicer to wait until you decide where you are going and include that in your letter.
  8. It's not about how many times you contact them but how far apart your contacts are spaced. My applications were submitted in November so the fact that everything was in so early already gave me a reason to contact programs for an update. When I was contacted for interviews or accepted by other programs I e-mailed other programs for updates. I've been e-mailing programs about once a month since January. On average, I've contacted the programs that I hadn't sent me results once or twice.
  9. 3.1.12 Gave up on waiting to hear from Mich, sent e-mail to coord. Apparently a letter was put in the mail but she was kind enough to e-mail it to me: Waitlisted. Paystub - Like my co-worker says "You don't care about paystubs until you want to get something: a car, a house, credit" - Keep Summons for Jury Duty - Seriously, they summoned me last year. They didn't call my group so I didn't have to appear but I thought I was good for 2 years. Must dig up old summons so I can try to get excused. - Keep
  10. I assume the mealworms are for a pet (or you have some really interesting dietary practices). Is it a turtle?
  11. I figured since we are all running to the mailbox like a kid during the holiday season, I thought I'd start a thread where we could share what is actually in our mailboxes (as opposed to what we wish was in them). I'll start: 2.29.12 An Athletica Catalog - Sorry not spending $80 on yoga pants - Trash A notice for an unpaid toll - I could have sworn I already paid this - Keep
  12. @ slaNYC Congrats!!! Dont' worry, it took a week for me to get an e-mail from the SPH at Pitt informing me of my acceptance and the letter came in the mail several days after that. It looks like we'll all be hearing from our remaining schools in the next couple of weeks!!!
  13. I'm 32 but I'll be 33 by the time I attend my program some where north of 35 by the time I finish my degree. For this reason I am petitioning the committee for acceptance into the Grad 35+ Club. *I hope I don't have to wait 2 months to find out if I got in!!* I'll be moving to a new city for my program so I am hoping to meet someone interesting (and independantly wealthly ) and settle down (with my luck I'll probably fall head over heels for someone pursuing a PhD in the humanities) I have heard from graduate students in other fields that having children during the dissertation phase is preferrable as childcare arrangements are less of an issue at this point. One of the programs I am considering has policies in place regarding parental leave for graduate students and that is very attractive. My biggest concern is transition from being an adult with an income in a supervisory position to being a trainee living off scraps.
  14. Yes is it is possible. My uGPA was a 2.7 (if I am allowed to round) from an Ivy. I had a complicated family issue to over come junior/senior year which affected my courses. I went directly in to an MPH program at top 20 school for public health and came out with a 3.5 gGPA (worked full time during my master's program). I am fortunate in that my field is biased to towards those with work experience. I have 10 years of public health experience, above average GRES and LORs from accomplished clinical researchers/public health practioners. At the time of this post I have been accepted to doctoral programs with funding/fellowships. A low uGPA can be overcome but you have to have a lot of other things working for you.
  15. Hi Everyone, I have question regarding funding offers. I am in the fortunate position of having atleast two schools do decide between. Neither at this point is offering a package that includes summer funding. Is this something I should be negotiating? I'm not 100% sure this is something standard in my field but both of my schools are working hard to get me? Would it be to much to trying and get some type of guarantee for an assistantship/TA position during the summer? I'm currently a working in my field with no outside support so it's not a realistic expectation for me to "go home" for the summer and do feel like I need to be engaged in some type of paid career activity over the summer for in order to progress in my field and keep my bank account from going into the red. Any thoughts on how I should approach this topic?
  16. @darse I just recieved the same response. Now I just need to hear from Tulane....
  17. @Bike Farm I have e-mails out but I haven't heard from the last 2 schools yet. I suspect that UMich will give me the same response as Hopkins and that Tulane will give me a definite answer as I know other departments have contacted people for interviews.
  18. So here's another quick update. I just recieved my official rejection e-mail from Emory. I decided to contact my remaining programs for a status update as I am anxious to focus on making a decision. I was rejected from UNC and Hopkins told me that I will need to wait until the end of February for their decision (which could be favorable as she reminded me that I still have until April 15th to make a decision). I really appreciate the schools that can tell you yes or no upfront. I hate being stuck in limbo and thinking about all the things that I need to do but can't do because I don't have all the information to make a decision.
  19. Congrats to all of you. Here is some interview advice that came in handy for me: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=12021060&postcount=73
  20. My interview was very much like this. I was able to choose my own date and who I wanted to meet. My interview was different in that I stayed with a faculty member instead of a hotel. On one hand, this was great because we spent quite a bit of time together and it saved me some money and headache. On the other hand, if I had stayed in a hotel I would have arranged to get in town quite a bit earlier so that I could do some exploring as this was my first time there. The students and faculty were very relaxed and I felt very comfortable being myself and sharing my perspective on things. My experience is not the norm because while I was there I found out that I had already been accepted prior to my "interview". So essence it was more of a recruitment visit as I also found out that they are planning to nominate me for a fellowship. I have been accepted by another program so I planning to visit that school in a few weeks.
  21. Thanks for all the good will. A lot of my anxiety is relieved but the thought has come to me that I will have to make a decision at some point and dissapoint someone (yes I know that is a good problem to have) so that has prevented me from getting a swelled head about this whole thing. I've had pretty good experiences with all of the facutly I've spoken too/met and these people are my future collegues so however this goes I need to handle it delicately. @slaNYC - I was so beat tired after driving home from Pittsburgh and then stunned by the cosmic timing of the USC e-mail (the time stamp was like 8 pm) that all I could do was update the results section and then collapse into bed. I didn't even post it to Facebook, but I had to update my gradcafe folks!!! As far as the other schools go I have not heard a peep. I'm going to wait until I find out about the fellowships before I start asking the other programs for decisions. From the results board I don't expect to hear anything until the end of February/beg of March.
  22. Hey everyone I just wanted to give you a short update. I completed my in person interview at Pitt and found out (some let it slip) that I had already been accepted! Later that day I found out that I was accepted by the University of South Carolina @ Columbia!! I've been nominated for fellowships at both schools which I believe is the reason why I was notified so early.
  23. I can't speak to individual disciplines but overall it seems like the very few interview requests/acceptances have gone out so far. Either there are way fewer applicants to public health doctoral programs on the boards this year (which would make sense if the cohort has a larger percent of older applicants) or many of the committees are reviewing doctoral applications later than previous years (may be they are trying to address issues of departmental/program funding before making decisions?). I'm not really sure what the reason is at this point, does anyone have any ideas/theories?
  24. Thanks for the clarification. I am still troubled by your statement. The underlying assumption is that affirmative action places unqualified students into slots when it really seeks to re-balance the fact that many groups don't have access to the social networks that provide the guidance and resources they need to get into college. I'll be the first one to admit that many schools used a quota system to fullfil the policy which did not really didn't benefit the schools or applicants. I much prefer the current system where other factors such as class, educational history etc are used to create a diverse class. As much I would like to believe that everyone is in the position that they are in at the moment solely due to merit it isn't true. It's actually more a "Straddler mentality" that all you need to do is work hard and the rest will fall into place. Success in academica (and other middle class enterprises) is a combination of hard work, determination, who you know and pure chance. If it wasn't this graduate school admission process would be very clear cut: GPA> X + GRE>Y = admission. As Straddlers the "who you know" part of the equation is something that we have to spend extra time building. It's hard to spend time "networking" or working on research projects when you have to work a part time job off campus in addition to your workstudy job. Furthermore, Straddlers typically don't enter college or graduate school understanding the importance of building networks, finding mentors, participating in the "right" extracurricular activities or doing research. Fortunately many of us figured it out or had someone take pity on us guide us about these kind of things. I don't think the purpose of this thread is have a pity party about our backgrounds but more to discuss the differences and how we've learned to manage them. You can't overcome a deficiency you don't know you have.
  25. Hi Behavioral, Could you eleborate on what you are trying to say here. Upon a first reading it looks like you are saying that we are all where we are based on merit but then you seem to say that AA (which I assume is short hand for African Americans) are less represented in graduate school which seems to suggest less merit in that group? I don't want to read into what you are saying but could perhaps clarify your statement further?
