Awwwwwwww...... you become a different person until about April and then you morph back into the sweet, wonderful person that you always are. Last year I saw myself turn into this obsessive catastrophe too...lol. But as soon as I got the first acceptance, it got a little bit better. I even applied to 10 schools! And as soon as I got an admit on the top half of my list... I started to feel normal again! Promise you will get better and than you won't stay crazy for long!! All the best.

How many of you have heard something back yet?
PhDreams replied to Nausicaa's topic in Waiting it Out
So I got word that even my apps that were due on Dec 1 wont have their committees meet until next week! Not fair! I could've used that month ...lol So.... no word yet. -
Was your app due last month or this month? If it was due last month, then I think theres a good chance that your committee has already met! If it's this month, then they wont meet until this month. Regardless, sending you super good vibes for a positive outcome!!!! PS- I can no longer find the applyyourself link on the website to check on my app's status. Do you know where I can find it?

It sounds like yes-sorta! I've heard that some professors reach out to students that they are really interested in to have an "informal chat" about research interests, etc before they make a decision. This is a good sign, I think. It sounds like you're in the running for the next step- interview or admit. I know I'd be ecstatic if I got to speak to a POI! I'm crossing my fingers for you!!

LOL My cupcake was a little sad this morning. This professor is super awesome so I was really shocked when they never uploaded the letters. My professor is a veteran professor and has probably sent hundreds of letters in their time. They probably know that letters don't get read until this month anyway and were in no rush to send them. Meanwhile, I've been soooo nervous about getting into programs. I do try to always be happy. "Be the rainbow in someone's cloud," that's my philosophy. There are enough wonderful opportunities in this world so that we can all find success and help others to be successful. It might be different if you have interviews but last year some were really direct in the subject line like: Admit to UMich and others didn't indicate good or bad news: Stanford Admission Decision and others yet didn't even send out an email until days after it was posted online and I had stumbled upon it on accident!

Geez... I hope not. Due to some last minute scrambling, I had to ask an extra professor to write a letter to replace a letter that didnt come through. And then another professor volunteered to write a letter because they knew someone in the department to which I was applying. I felt uncomfortable saying, "No, thanks. I already have enough." Especially if this professor might have a strong connection to the dept! But then .... the original professor came through. So now I have FIVE letters to a program that says they don't require more than three. They emphasize in their website- quality over quantity, three is enough. Sooooooooo....... for both our sakes, I hope that they don't get annoyed.

>.< !!!!! Side note, did I tell you guys about my 3rd recommender that never sent letters for me? Professor emailed me today to ask how my applications are going.. what?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! (mom voice) I'm not mad....I'm just disappointed.

So glad you slept. I, on the other hand, am still awake!! omggggggggggggg it's 4am. D: And im still here.... where is Feb?!

All of the above, I guess. LOL For some reason I can't really get into material that I read on a screen. I love Mother Earth, but I need to print and highlight. I also keep the files in a folder on my desktop and the citations in a separate folder in EndNote as I go. I also keep some articles on my phone to read on the go. I think everyone has a different method and you'll eventually find yours. Mine is not practical.. as in it sucks to carry around thirty 20-page articles in your bag, but I really cant get into the whole annotating on your computer thing. Good luck!!!!

Dean's list is an honor and you don't have to have all those categories. Just use the categories that fit your purpose. Follow a CV format and you can include any workshops you attended or certificates you have or classes you taught or places where you volunteered, etc.
-
Remove your objective. Thats for a resume, not a CV. I'm not sure if your field requires research interests, but if it does then include them. Format your CV to include dates. Ex: EDUCATION Georgia State University, September 2001 - May 2005 Applied Linguistics Minor in Psychology, B.A. Atlanta, Georgia HONORS Georgia State 2001 - 2005 Dean's List Include sections like research, honors (a place that also can include scholarships), publications, languages, and presentations. Look for formating examples https://www.google.com/search?q=CV+format&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=osN&tbo=u&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&source=univ&sa=X&ei=Y73nUNvtJaS00QGfgYHoCw&ved=0CGAQsAQ&biw=1234&bih=549 Good luck!!!!!!!

LOL!!!!! Yes, I'm not even married to any school in particular. I promise I'd make it work!!!!! Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee..... 1/7 is not crazy, right? I also applied to two UCs. -
Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow. I am so sorry that you had to experience that yesterday. One of my recommeders decided to flake out completely and never sent any letters but one. I hope that it's because they decided that they didn't feel as strongly about me. So.... maybe I dodged a bullet? But CLEANING?!?!?!??!!?! What kind of letter is that...

Awwwww... I guess that wouldn't tell us that we suck, right? lol But my profs are the ones that basically suggested programs to me.... I hope they were right about at least one. All I need is one. -

dealing with prof who obviously dislikes you
PhDreams replied to muffins's topic in Officially Grads
I beg to differ. I've been in classrooms where professors have said things that I have found violently offensive about race and other students just sorta sit there either because they are stunned, apathetic, or because they share the same views. Prejudices are not exempt in academia. In fact, I found that here is were they most thrive. That being said, it sucks to feel like a professor is out to get you regardless of whether this is based in fact or not. Feelings are always real and the discomfort that the OP feels is genuine. However, it really doesn't seem that the professor is out to get the OP. To put things into context, an A- isn't that bad. I've worked hard in some classes and have earned my A-s. If you would have said a B-...well that's another story. That's almost failing. But an A-...I think that you'll be fine and the further you chug along in academia you realize that there will be many characters that you do not gel with. Keep your head high and do your best work. You can do this! -
Yay! Glad it worked out!

How open should I be about having a family?
PhDreams replied to +Whiskey's topic in Interviews and Visits
I'm on the fence about this issue as well. Not because I am in it, but because I am also a women in academia. if I were you, I wouldn't bring it up until I had formal offers. No matter what anyone tells you, people still believe that children and spouses can and will be a distraction and may impede your ability to fully commit to your work. That being said however, there are many, many women that have children in PhD programs. It can be done. I just think that you can easily find out all the information that you need to from other students and on your own researching the city through family websites. There is no reason to bring it up and potentially compromise what someone might assume about your abilities. You have your chance to disprove these theories once you are in the program. But in order to do that, you actually have to get in. -
I don't think Harvard interviews. I think it's just admit/deny/waitlist. From what I've heard, they usually just have "Admitted Student" events.

To be safe I think you should aim to get your app in before midnight tonight in your own timezone.
