  1. I have nothing to do with Baylor, but I was told by several people at CU Integrated that if you let the program know that it's your top choice and you definitely will accept their offer if given one, it might bump you up even higher on the waitlist. Good luck! I hope you get in
  2. My roommate during interview weekend was in touch with the grad secretary at least twice after the interview weekend to talk about when acceptances and rejections would be sent out... and she still got in! Though I wouldn't advise calling more than once (just in case), they know that everyone is anxious and will surely understand and be helpful
  3. Sweet deal! Congrats to you both Super pumped to head back into the city... and then spend all of my time in a lab rather than exploring Manhattan
  4. 6 months and change till the dream school program starts. \o/

  5. I'm going to edit that with "do NOT wear high heels if you don't know how to wear them." I wore 4" pumps with a skirtsuit, but that's because I wear heels enough that I can run a block in them if I have to. My roommate wore 2" pumps with a thicker heel because she doesn't wear heels as often as I do. If you NEVER wear heels and don't know how to walk in them, you're going to look silly - stick with a nice pair of flats. If you think you might wear heels, practice wearing them around your city/town before you leave so that you're sure you can handle them. If you're nervous about wearing heels, listen to your gut and don't wear them. In terms of advice on what to wear (sorry if I already posted this - don't feel like going back and checking), I really like Dr. Isis' advice on shoes: http://isisthescientist.com/2012/01/04/ask-dr-isis-hot-interview-shoes-and-more/ My advice for this is to avoid anything too tight. Doesn't mean yo uhave to wear a burlap sack, but a looser-fitting sweater/turtleneck will look a lot less provocative. You can even try a v-neck with a button-down underneath! You can also try to wear the skirt with flats instead of heels (don't know if you've done that already), since heels tend to accentuate curves and all. Also, my suggestion for button-down shirts for any size woman:make sure your boobs aren't popping out. I've seen a lot of people who are clearly "between" sizes in the chest area (a small is fine everywhere except boobs, but a medium seems a little too loose, for example), and when they opt for the smaller size, they get this really awkward fold-out around their chest area through which you can see their bra (hopefully that phrasing makes sense). Check for itt when you're shirt-shopping, and when in doubt, go a size bigger! My roommate and I both went with the method of tucking our shirts into our tights for the interview - yes, I know it sounds really sexy, but it helps to prevent your shirt from riding up and looking baggy and weird; it also makes it look less bulky if you tuck it in right, so you can't see the lines through your skirt. </advice>....back to work!
  6. I think that the school you attend will only have a significant impact on your job search if you're looking for a job outside of academia. If you're looking to stay in the ivory tower, the quality of research you will do will likely have a more significant impact.
  7. I got an email from the director of the Integrated Program on Friday, and got an email to check the website today. That being said, I know that the program (if it's the one you're talking about) will have rolling-ish admission, so don't lose hope yet! I was told by one of the profs there that after interviews, they accept 25%, reject 25%, and then 50% are in this gray area until they have a better idea of who's accepting and rejecting down the line.
  8. I'd definitely advise everyone to use Ms. or Mr. or Dr. ______ when first meeting someone, regardless of where you're from. Look at it this way: if they want you to call you by their first name, they'll tell you - and you'll win points for being extra polite and respectful!
  9. Anyone heading to CU in the fall? I'll be attending the Integrated Bio program!
  10. False. I only applied to one program, was accepted to it, and I'm still on here all the time because I'm so excited for the Fall!
  11. Congrats!!! I got the official email last night I woke up at 9 today, going to yoga for noon, might go to the cinema with mom, then will knit all evening... and then will play video games ALL DAY TOMORROW, as per my promise to myself. And maybe knit a bit, since I do need to finish the scarf I'm knitting before valentine's day I didn't buy any champagne on the way home etc etc because I was already home when I got the message - luckily, we had some champagne stashed away :]
  12. Accepted to CU Integrated! So pumped!
  13. Not letting myself trust an unofficial acceptance...bah!!!

It's so tough to stay calm. I hear it's rare that they will change their mind though.

I got the official email earlier today, and the letter is coming soon... ahhhh! Thank you guys!

  14. I got an unofficial acceptance for my program from my PoI last night.... I really want to celebrate but I'm scared if I do I'll jinx it and they'll rescind the offer!! It seems too good to be true....
  15. My "shoot for the moon" goal is to get published in Nature or Science as first author while still working on my PhD. A girl can dream, right?
  16. I've seen that for my program... super annoying!
  17. If there's a grad secretary of some sort for your department, I'd suggest emailing him/her instead if you really can't wait
  18. I think that wearing dark, clean, no-holes-in-the-knees jeans are definitely okay for the situation - but I'd avoid very washed-out, ragged looking pairs. You still want to look like you give a damn!
  19. Thank you for being the first person on these boards to spell my username right!!
  20. Oh, I know that's true! Two reasons it bugged me: one, the two rejections were 'via website' (I don't think there's a way to check online status on the website, and the GS didn't say anything when I asked about it); and two, because I know for a fact that the adcom for this program is meeting this week, so the timing was just really crummy I was refreshing my inbox for a day and a half obsessively before I finally contacted the grad secretary to get peace of mind...
  21. The Columbia Integrated adcom met today, so results should be out in the next few days!
  22. I mean, if you have it on an iPad or printed out then it might be okay for figures - but I was speaking to some profs about the qualification exam process, and they said that they only allowed chalk talks for one's research because powerpoints can be used as a crutch. You should know your research inside out and be able to explain it eloquently without having to rely on bullet points, imho Practice talking about it out loud! That really helped me.
  23. Sooooo remember how I said that two people from my program had posted rejections? Talked to the grad secretary, and she said no rejections had been sent out yet, so they were fake results. Not cool, dudes. Not cool.
  24. I'm Canadian but went to a US undergrad - still didn't have to take the GRE! Though I applied to a Master's at U of T for entry last year; not sure if that makes a difference. I enjoyed the GRE though... I have a soft spot for silly math questions and vocabulary.
