SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants

AAAHHHH! I hope you're right, and I hope it's good news. On the other hand, though, I just bent over backwards to get people to cover my shifts for the NYU visit day (March 9th) and bought plane tickets. What if I get accepted to Rush (my #1 choice, and much cheaper) after all that, before I even go? I know, I know, first-world graduate applicant problems... -
Hi everyone! I have an interview with the University of Tennessee's speech pathology program on March 5th, and to my knowledge it will be the only school to interview me. I just had a quick question about whether I should mention something in my interview if such a question comes up. Even though I majored in linguistics and had never set foot in a speech pathology class or observation, I knew last year (my senior year of college) that I wanted to go to grad school for SLP. So, I applied to several schools, all very ambitious choices (perhaps too much so). I got an interview at one, a waitlist position at another, but ultimately went 0 for 7. But I didn't let this get me down; when it looked like I wouldn't get in anywhere, I took it upon myself to get my prerequisites done (at a great online program, on my own time) and improve my GRE scores and resume over the next year. I worked my tail off, working at a full-time internship while taking my first nine hours of post-bac prerequisites, and later working with adults with developmental disabilities and slight communication disorders while I took the rest of the classes. So far, this has paid off - I have only heard good news from the schools I applied to this year. (If it matters, I have only applied to one of the schools I didn't get into last year, and it's not Tennessee.) Should I mention this story? It would be my honest answer to a question like "Tell me about your greatest accomplishment" or "What are you most proud of?" Heck, it could serve as an explanation of WHY they should choose me (I'm self-motivated, driven, determined...). It may sound bad to mention my rejection, but could I just mention it briefly and dwell on the positives? Should I add that those schools were all VERY competitive? Any help is appreciated!

I bet the NYU waitlist is pretty big. Was anyone even rejected yesterday, or before that? -
So now I have been accepted to NYU, but I missed the FAFSA deadline for my program. I can still apply for whatever financial aid is left, and again in the spring, but the idea of footing all that fall tuition is enough to keep me on my toes. I'm only a little less anxious to hear from the others. It is nice to know I'm in somewhere, though. I have an interview for another program in about two weeks, and I think I'll be much less nervous

I have to let them know by April 15. Their FAFSA deadline has passed already (February 1...isn't that ridiculously early? That's the deadline for new graduate students in Steinhardt...lucky us ), so this put a damper on my good news. I'm definitely going to wait it out. My apologies to those on the wait list. -

I applied to the two year program, so the re-entry program may have a different timeline. And I submitted my application on 12/22/11, according to the web site, so take from that what you will (the deadline was January 6, I think). -

I got into NYU! I was in the car with my boyfriend and randomly checked my email on my phone. Like some of you, I was expecting an interview process, so the first words out of my mouth were "Wait, what?" This is phenomenal - it's a bit pricey and only my first acceptance, but it means the world to know that I AM GOING TO BE AN SLP for sure!!! This will help me be less nervous for my Tennessee interview. lizmeyers, my status did not change on the web site. It still just says my application is submitted. -
Yep. Mine is a bit bitey, but wherever I end up, his furry butt is coming with me

I got an email today asking me to schedule an interview at Tennessee! So far everything I've heard is good news (except this "400 applicants" business ). Did anyone else hear from them? It's kind of weird that I got an email on a Sunday, and no one else has mentioned it on the results page... -

Going along with someone's The King's Speech allusion earlier, maybe I'll just practice anyway like that guy -

You said it. What if, during my second application process, all I have to show for my ass busting and dedication is just a couple of emails that said I was almost good enough for a few programs? -
Do the prerequisites. Not only will it show up on your transcript that you have them, but you will sound so much smarter in your SOPs and interviews if you're well-versed in the subject.

My applications are in, and I've already decided to put this out of my mind, because everything I read is just upsetting me more. I heard from two very competitive schools that I am still being considered, but now I'm up against the very best, and both of their applicant pools grew quite a bit So, I'm going to cut back on checking this site obsessively (once a day at the most), but what do I do to stop thinking about this? What are you guys going to do? I already coincidentally planned a hiking/camping trip with my boyfriend during the week of March 11, which is when I am expecting to hear from most of them, and I think a few days without internet will do me good - especially then. Any ideas for before then? Let's give each other suggestions!

I don't know if they had it last year, but they anticipated it this year. I remember referring to the Rush FAQs when I was working on my initial CSDCAS application, and it mentioned that we would be notified for a supplemental application. -

I think the point was to let them know we're still interested, and maybe the basic info we provided makes it easier to reference our applications quickly? -

UGH, I hate this. I start feeling good because I've made some sort of "cut" for Northwestern and Rush, which are probably more selective than most of my other schools. But then I realize I might not get into either, or maybe I'll make the "first cut" at all the other schools but never the final cut. I am really psyching myself out because I did this last year and got in nowhere (without the prerequisites), and in my undergrad applications I got waitlisted at every single one except my "safety school" (where I ended up going and was happy, but still). Actually, I think waitlisting would almost be worse news than rejection. If I have to do the applications again, I will honestly vomit. RE: Rush, however, my somewhat uneducated opinion is that we're in a group of less than 100 students. I say this because when I called Northwestern to ask similar questions about being invited to the open house, they told me that there were 400 total applicants this year. I would assume way more people apply to Northwestern than Rush, even in a very competitive year. So even if there were also 400 Rush applicants, that leaves us a pretty good chance! I know Rush's current class is in the lower 40s, but at my visit they said it keeps getting bigger than they want. I hope this isn't the year they decide to cut back :/ -

Got the Rush email too! I wish I knew how many did. Rush is my top choice... -
AudioEnvy, I'd call them if I were you. I got the email from them as well, but if you didn't, you should just make sure nothing's wrong.

Okay, I talked to Cindy Coy at Northwestern. The open house is invitation-only, and about 180 were invited (out of 400 applicants, so congratulations if you got an invitation!). She said it's more of a chance for us to get a look at the school, but it would be good if you wrote her an email saying why you can't go, if that's not practical for you for whatever reason. Also, I would suggest writing that you're still interested even if you can't go! -

I got invited, but I already visited the campus in October. I drove from Georgia and had a visit arranged. On one hand, it wasn't terribly helpful and this open house might be more so. But on the other hand I would have to get two shifts covered that day, and that's only if I just fly in and out that day! I hate to say it, but I don't think this open house is as selective as they're making it sound. You can find the RSVP page by Googling it. However, it's probably safe to say we've made some kind of "cut," but I don't know if it's down to 200 people, 100 people, 70 people... Also, aren't they anticipating having decisions out by then? The status checker said "late February/early March". I seriously doubt this will make or break anyone's application - you might even already know if you're in or not before you go. Oh, well, if this isn't the case, I'm fine not going since I mentioned my previous visit in my essay. -
@thesaurus, last year, FSU's program claimed they would take nonmajors, but they rejected me on those very grounds. It seems like the economy has hit everyone right down to grad schools; they can have the official stance that they will take people without prerequisites, but if they get more applicants than they know what to do with, they can start throwing people out of the pile for whatever reasons they want. Also last year, the LSU main campus wrote me a personal letter saying they wanted to accept me based on everything else, but they didn't really have the money to staff prerequisite classes for grad students. I don't mean to discourage you! I'm just saying be prepared for anything. I know a lot of programs are a lot more welcoming of nonmajors and have a track specially designed for them. Good luck to everyone!

Hey fellow SLP applicants, I applied to Northwestern University's Master's program (among many others), and I got an invitation to their March 2nd open house in the mail today. What's more, they said they were impressed with my application, so I'm assuming mine survived some cuts. Did anyone else get one, or do you know how many people did? I'm just wondering because I have already visited the campus, and I have two shifts that day and I work all weekend. I just want to know if it will improve my chances to get two shifts covered and fly to Chicago (from Georgia) just for the day...
