  1. Somebody better tell that to the schmucks doing their academic careers at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Chicago, etc. -
  2. Dear god, the further self-inflation of the role (and plight) of the graduate student. Sorry, but a sociology major working in workforce development helping displaced workers rejoin the ranks of the employed - that is public service. Grading papers or providing office hours for undergrads. . .not so much. No one has a gun to any graduate students head, telling them that they NEED to get a post-bach degree. This idea that graduate students need to be some coddled class is a tiring one (and no doubt a reason why graduate students - especially PhD's, get such a bad rap outside of academics).
  3. So instead of just saying "I don't think you'd be a great fit for our department. . ." the more likely scenario is that they went out of their way to craft a phoney baloney story about international relations?
  4. The 32GIG Nexus 7 is 249, the 16GIG is 199. If all you are going to do with it is e-read or annotate, you really only need the 16GIG (or better, find someone selling the 8GIG). Apple may be the most supported in the tablet market (if its on Google Play then it's on iTunes - not so the other way around), but I have yet to have a need for the N7 that hasn't been addressed on the Play Store. Plus it's not Apple so. . .plus.
  5. You got rejected from a school in Boston. . .BOSTON. That isn't exactly The Middle of Nowhere. It's Boston; that alone is going to get a number of strong applicants that means the Uni doesn't have to "slum it up. . ." as it were.
  6. If this program ONLY ever interacted with members of their own program. . .you might have a point. It's ironic that you mention "ego. . ." in your follow-up letter; sometimes it is best to accept rejection and move on, then potentially sour a future relationship because of a moment of hurt feelings.
  7. . . .all depends on the discipline. Someone mentioned math, and if someone were taking 4 "real" math courses (3/4 credit hours) - my god I can't even imagine. Top that off with any responsibilities you might have out of the gate - yuck. Other programs it is probably much easier to get away with. I like to think less in terms of how many classes, and more in terms of how many classes AND units. I would finally say. . .these people want you to succeed; if loading up on classes impedes that they (should) tell you otherwise.
  8. This isn't uncommon and I would be surprised if one didn't get the message. The schools tally bills long before the federal government and the actual campus get around to applying tuition waivers and aid to your account.
  9. If that was a "blog post" someone needs a refresher course in blog posting. I've read critiques on Hemingway with less words.
  10. Disturbing is hardly the word I'd use for this, since this information is (more generally) already available from alternate sources. This bill - at first blush - would seek to at least put the "State Stamp" on wage information. More knowledge is hardly ever a bad thing.
  11. The heck is the difference between a Dining Room and a Dining Area? I used to have a place that had neither, and either sat at the computer or on a couch in front of the TV. . .I'll not go back. There is something relaxing about being able to have a meal and it is just that. A meal. Not some spartan combination of dinner and studying or coding, but a dinner. Plus it does give you an incentive to want to host gatherings once you get all buddy with your new best friends.
  12. About the only cons: dating and throwing parties. If you never bring anyone back to your place or prefer to be the invitee it's really a no brainer move.
  13. Other than the question on what to do in an annoying undergrad course. . .nothing I suppose.
  14. If you can't sweat it through an annoying undergrad course, I am curious what happens when you come up against an annoying graduate course. I think there is perhaps an age disconnect here, that is clouded your ability to find any benefit in the course (which, seemingly has lead to you falling behind in assignments?). Personally, I would stick with the course if for no other reason than it's something you're familiar with so why roll the dice on something else.
  15. ANDS!

    Study Snacks

1 part Johnnie Walker, 2 parts club soda.
  16. . . .my goodness has it come to this? Any applicant would be lucky to get into any of those schools.
  17. . . .Administrative and little more than that in practice. If someone is rejected by the graduate school, it is a technical matter that is usually correctable (presuming a person didn't lie on their application).
  18. Again, all depends on where they are headed. LD LA should suffice for most campuses, but I remember my LA in undergrad and it is not where I "learned" LA.
  19. Sounds like they are interested; even more likely they are going to want to submit you for (so-called diversity) fellowships.
  20. Depends on what schools you will be applying to. Most will have LA as a requirement - period. Even BioStats which is a bit less heavy on the heavy theory has that as a basic requirement (for PhD's). Better to be able to get in the door some places (schools that don't require RA) than no places (schools that don't require LA).
  21. You can certainly teach Real Analysis without ever going down the measure-theoretic route, but it will leave many students ill-prepared when they get to some of the more rigorous stat programs out there.
  22. I had a 3.6'ish and was accepted to OSU. It really was the LOR's and SOP that won them over I am thinking. Nevermind I didn't hear from anyone until the beginning of Feb. As for getting in somewhere - so long as you applied to schools you do not mind getting into, and did reasonably well in Calc. - you should be fine I would think (unless of course you only applied to like 5 schools).
  23. As how much time you have to consider the offer, even if you know the answer. It communicates indirectly that there is a need for more time and puts the impetus on them to ask why (at which point you can mention the other offers if you want).
