  1. Haha I know! That extra day is upsetting me. I'm so anxious to hear back.
  2. Personally, I don't see any reason to tell them about your time in law school.
  3. I highly recommend couchsurfing.org. Basically you can crash at someone's home for free for a couple of days. Generally the people on there are really cool and can even show you around the city, give you advice/insight, etc. As far as transportation, check out bus fares or ride shares. If you have to eat out at a fancy restaurant with the group, pretend you have some dietary restriction so that you can be cheap. I think you should go ahead and get a credit card, though. WIthout much of a history or income you're going to get a small limit, but it's important for emergencies like these.
  4. I'm not too neurotic (yet, anyway), but I'm a little bit obsessive just because I know that if I don't get accepted anywhere, I'll need to come up with another plan for the next year. Like, I tell myself it's okay that I'm waitressing with a college degree because it's just temporary. But if I don't get in...well, it's hard for anyone to find a job right now. So yes, the future does worry me a little. I don't want to keep feeling like my life's on hold.
  5. -(sympathetic face): "What are your other plans if you don't get in?" -"So are you planning to teach English?" -"Do you think you'll get in anywhere?"
  6. I'm right there with you. I graduated a semester early, so now I have this free semester where I had planned to get a job and save up money for grad school. Since I'm planning on only working through the summer, though, I don't want to get a "real world professional job" only to quit a few months later. I've kept my part-time tutoring job which brings in about $400/month, but I didn't realize it would be this hard to find something to supplement that. I'm living with my parents in the meantime to save money, but their "get a job" hints are becoming depressing, especially because I am trying but no one's biting.
  7. Ok so I submitted my CSDCAS on 1/3, and it was verified today (1/20). My final last recommender sent his letter this week, so hopefully the schools will receive my complete application some time in the next week or two. I sort of wish more of my schools had interviews...because then I'd know sooner if they were at least a little bit interested in me.
  8. If I get accepted anywhere, I am going to treat myself to a wild night of drinking and bar hopping with possible blackout and/or beautiful strangers.
  9. A Sunday deadline seems really stupid to me. I'm still waiting on one professor to finish his rec letters, and I just have to keep reminding myself that most schools have a grace period, so it's not the end of the world. Yet. I'm also super jealous of the students in programs who get their acceptances in February. The earliest of my schools is March. Boo.
  10. I think genuine enthusiasm fine. I'm always happy for my friends who excitedly post that they got in somewhere. It's only annoying when someone's smug about it, or implies that there was never any question about their acceptance to a particular school. Generally I don't post much on Facebook, but I'll be so excited if I get in anywhere that I'll probably reference it somehow on fb.
  11. So I've finally finished all 9 of my applications! YAY so glad that's over. 2/3 of my recommenders have gotten all their letters in, and the third will probably wait until the deadline, which is fine. I sent my GRE scores about a month ago, and all but one school has marked that as received on the online application status. There's still a couple of weeks before that school's deadline, but I'm going to call them if I don't see a change this coming week. And now for the waiting game...
  12. My topic was from the pool as well. I thought it was a ridiculous question.
  13. I just found out that Vanderbilt has over 500 applicants.
  14. Agreed with above. My shortest asked for 300 words, the longest was 3 pages double-spaced. The majority wanted around 500-600 words, though, so I'd imagine they don't want long personal statements.
  15. Haha this is me. "If I can park in that space before the song ends, I'll get into X!"
  16. I submitted my CSDCAS about a week ago, and it still says "Complete/Not Verified." So far I'm not all that impressed with this service. It's pretty expensive for the amount of time they take to process anything.
  17. Hmm, good GREs, great rec letters, mediocre GPA...wait, what is this on her transcript--THREE Cs?? She must be one of those lazy smart people. She'll never survive our prestigious program. But put her at the bottom of the waitlist just to mess with her.
  18. Yikes, that's extremely unprofessional of her. A couple of weeks I understand, but a month?? For the deadlines that are more than two weeks old, I would suggest you immediately find another professor/supervisor/person to write something for you. I think a non-major professor is completely fine, provided you did well in their class. Who knows, it might even help you--well-rounded and all that. At this point I think you need to have something to serve as a third letter. As long as your other two letters are strong, the third shouldn't matter so much as long as you actually do have a third. Sorry this is happening to you!! It's so frustrating that she would lead you on for so long that there's hardly any time left to find someone else.
  19. Haha I loved Vandy's program, but I get the impression there's about a million of us applying for 30 spots at Vandy. The recent revision definitely could make a difference in how they look at GREs. I saw on one school's website that they required a 1000 on the old GRE, and a combined score of 150 on the new. lol I'm pretty sure that's not possible...maybe they meant average? I would love to see my recs, but I trust my profs to write a strong letter for me. Now that everything's in I just want it to be March.
  20. I agree with most of what you said, but I think it varies from program to program. I'm going for a Master's in Speech-Language Pathology, and one of the schools I visited said they look at the application like this: GPA: 25-30% GRE: 25-30% LoR: 25-30% SoP: 5-10% Experience: 5% The department head explained to me that LoRs have become really important because they'll receive lots of applications with 3.9/4.0 GPAs and then the LoRs will rank the student in the top 50%, which shows there must be some serious grade inflation, and it was also important to the program that their students develop relationships with faculty, so some past history of that is a good indicator. So hopefully my GRE and LoR will make up for my mediocre GPA.
  21. My first deadline is three days away, and 2 out 3 professors have not submitted their recommendations. I sent them an email a week in advance, but did not get a response. I understand that the end of the year is always busy and that it's break right now, but I gave them all the info (deadlines very clearly marked) about 5 weeks in advance. I'm not upset because there's still several days, but I can't help but be a little worried. I just wish they would send me some sort of confirmation. I don't want to be the student that constantly emails and badgers the prof, though, so I'm just going to sit back and try to enjoy the rest of the holidays.
  22. Hello all, another non-background here! I'm applying for SLP for Fall 2012 and I'm terrified I won't get in. My stats are in my sig, and they're decent, but I'm really concerned about my GPA. It's from a top 20 (academic-wise) school, so hopefully that will make some difference...idk. My GRE is fairly strong and my rec letters should be solid, but I don't have all that much relevant experience as I went to a school that didn't offer anything remotely resembling SLP courses. My desire to be an SLP comes from a personal encounter and the research I have done. I'm planning to shadow several SLPs in the spring, but by that point there will be no time to add that to my applications. I can't believe how competitive this field is! It's really starting to worry me. I've almost finished applications, mostly waiting on those rec letters. The app process is so stressful and expensive! Haha I'm constantly refreshing pages, trying to find out my application status. Good luck everyone and we're just a few months away now!
